If you're hearing a voice speaking back when you pray, it might be the Lord, but how would you even know if you're not at least familiar with what He's said in His written word.
The Lord primarily speaks through scripture whether while reading or as recalled and applied to life. Direct conversation is not the norm, but the exception and indistinguishable from a psychotic break.
The Lord instructs how to deal with our problems. Keep your ears open.

If you're praying and not paying attention to what the Lord is telling you, then half the battle is lost. We learn to discern the Lord's voice as we mature.
And how do you learn this "discernment " without knowing or believing His written word? Psychics hear familiar spirits. How do you know that you're not hearing a deceiving spirit rather than the Lord?

Deceiving spirits offer "counsel" too. That's why people consult psychics.

The best way to learn discernment is to obey the Lord's commandments.

Someone recently suggested to me that we don't have to suffer for our sin. We all know God forgives us. Does he discipline us?
Only if you make an effort to avoid sin.

Which, as the Bible says, means only if you are a Child of God.
Proverbs 3:12
Hebrews 12:6 (This verse begs a question.)

Who does God love? God loves those who love Him.
Proverbs 8:17

And those who love Him avoid sin.
John 14:15
John 14:23

OK, so how do you know the Lord's commandments without reading and believing His word?
If God's Word weren't available to you, the Lord could teach you himself. However, I'm sure you have a Bible, so my advice is to read it and obey the Lord's commandments.

@Bob Estey I think the term "disciple" us is used for those that are running God's church. And the bible teaches us who should be bishops and deacons. They must be righteous and not sinning and run their own families well. If we are sinning we are not called to be disciples. We can desire repentance to be saved though and be as little children. We should then be part of a church service and hear the message that his disciples preach.

Do those running the church ever go astray?

I don't think so. They're usually pretty good people, if they do go astray they're supposed to back down from leadership. That is how good churches are ran. We learned from the Catholic church what happens when they go astray and their church covers it up. Not good. I think good churches have married clergy though, so not much chance of the Catholic problems. People still have sinful thoughts, but being a bishop immerses a person in constant gospel messages, which keeps them on track. And they should be filled with the spirit from constant service to God. And that is also what the bible teaches. Although not often followed.

There are scriptures that talk about sinning against the Holy Spirit.

It would be suggestive to say any believer who has faith in the Gospel of Christ, knows their sin has been paid for, knows they are to die to themselves and put God first and love Him, and love others as he would of course would love himself, knows they are given the Holy Spirit that is indeed given by and through Jesus send the Holy Spirit from the Father (God - Himself), knows that they can always ask for help by and through the Holy Spirit as they walk in their Christian life, knows what the Gospel states about Jesus and what he has stated, those who are believers in and know this much.

I believe the connection between drawing near to God and drawing away from God can always result in only either good or bad. Disciple will always happen or some type of consequence that may lead you in a even worse situation in the end. Seeking wisdom from God is good and drawing near and staying close to him and have faith in Jesus.

The wise - drawing near God who is love, and causes us to love, by the Spirit. Drawing near to God leads to a place of comfort and warmth.

The unwise choice - drawing away from God, which leads to possibly unloving traits. Drawing away from God can lead to a place that is dark, uncomfortable and cold.

Be encouraged to all,

In Christ,
Matthew Gallagher

I think you'll find Satan enjoys nothing more than leading church leaders astray, and I think you'll find he does a lot of that.

For some reason the name “Jimmy Swaggert” comes to mind....he has no business preaching —- it’s in the Bible that he purports to know......a preacher has to have an impeccable good reputation in the Community....Swaggert does not have that attribute..... it does not mean that he us bound for hell— it just means that he no longer has the right to preach....get off the stage....go sit in a pew.....and listen to somebody else that “ does” qualify .....maybe somebody that does not condemn tobacco growers while he himself is repeatedly spending his afternoons with prostitutes....and claims it’s “ nobody’s business” ...

"The great commission " is to make disciples of men.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19
This is the risen Christ's instructions to His disciples. The Church is supposed to be disciples making more disciples.

Thanks for conceding my point. Every religion believes that they've received truth from God, but His word is the only sure word of prophecy and Revelation of His person.

And what is the SPIRIT of PROPHCEY . THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST . Yes indeed .
Point all to the glorious Risen savoir . HE alone is the only savoir and only hope .
Praise be to the glorious LORD . And WHO is the WORD of GOD , JESUS CHRIST . LET ALL PRAISE THE GLORIOUS LORD .
Confess Him and believe from the heart that GOD has rose HIM from the dead and ye shall be saved .
Let all that has breath praise and thank the glorious LORD .
