For some reason the name “Jimmy Swaggert” comes to mind....he has no business preaching —- it’s in the Bible that he purports to know......a preacher has to have an impeccable good reputation in the Community....Swaggert does not have that attribute..... it does not mean that he us bound for hell— it just means that he no longer has the right to preach....get off the stage....go sit in a pew.....and listen to somebody else that “ does” qualify .....maybe somebody that does not condemn tobacco growers while he himself is repeatedly spending his afternoons with prostitutes....and claims it’s “ nobody’s business” ...
There was a time, long ago, I liked Jimmy, but I don't watch him now.

That is the prelude to getting to know him.
Jesus said plainly that sanctification is through the word of God. We are sanctified and grow in grace by abiding in His word. However, men frequently justify rebellion and sin through personal revelations as have every cult leader that has ever drawn breath.

Not to mention, Faith comes by hearing the word of God, hearing back then as there were no NT scriptures, we now have them to read, or listen to. The more of the word we get into us, the more our problems and the things of this world disappear.

Someone recently suggested to me that we don't have to suffer for our sin. We all know God forgives us. Does he discipline us?

Christ has already been judged for all the sin of a born again Believer.
He has already been scourged and crucified.....So there is the judgment due YOU for your sin, if you are born again.
Its on Him.

Now go and read Romans 4:8, and notice that God does not charge sin to the born again.

So, when you say...>does God discipline us for our sin".......and then read that God does not charge you for your sin.......the answer is obvious.

What then?
Well, God corrects YOU......not your sin, as judging you for sin, does not correct you .
See, YOU are the issue......YOU have "flesh strongholds" that God has to deal with.........but that is not the same as dealing with your sinning.
God deals with with your habits, habitual desires, and mindsets that are in opposition to Holiness.
THese have to be rooted out...spiritually....and that is a Spiritual Work that happens on the inside of you.
"the potter shapes the Clay".
"every branch in me that beareth not fruit God purges"......

So, what about those deeds you do that you knew were wrong when you did them, Bob.
All those sins you confessed.
Well, you have this......The law of "sowing and reaping"....that are the consequences of your sin.
Thats happens in the natural realm, as "be sure your sin will find you out" and it will.

The New Testament is teaching that places the Old Testament in "proper perspective ", that of its source of inspiration, the Holy Spirit. The gospels reveal Christ by His works and words, the Revelation reveals Christ in His purposes through history, Hebrews reveals Christ to those under the law of Moses, and most of the Epistles (if not all) are written specifically to the church, not the world. However:
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16

I think some people really don't want to grow in Christ because they're too attached to their sin and don't like the conviction of judgment as revealed in scripture. Eg. I want to live a sanctified life, but not today, maybe tomorrow.

24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. Hebrews 11:24-26

Christ is the Word.
And as you are suggesting....the more we have the word in us..........the bible, along with our submission of ourselves to God.....than the word of God and Christ who is the word.....cleans us, grows us, and maintains us.

Here is the Key to understanding how the Grace of God, is our power of Holiness.

God gives us the Grace to do what He requires.
When we try to do this in our power, we find no Grace of God....so, we fail.
BUT, when we stop trying to strive, and instead allow God to be our power, our goodness, and our love, then we are become ..."Christ always gives me the Victory".

So, its not by might or power, but by my SPIRIT , sayeth the Lord"........is where we are to exist in REAL FAITH.
And THAT Faith, will bring us to this Spirituality ...= "as many as be perfect".

Yes indeed, He certainly IS the Word...good post, the more of the scriptures we read/study, the more He is living in us AS The Word. Very comforting and I'm so grateful that He gave us His Word to guide us, to shepherd us. Always point to the risen Christ!

And this is why our sister is not a calvnist and that by choice . Cause SHE IS learning the bible . And we see
a different version of GOD getting taught by calvin . THUS , we flee calvin . SEE how simple that is .
THE LORD does keep His lambs safe . Yes He does . Let all feast on the bible and learn and grow .

I do not se how that is possible...
Indeed dear sister . Lest we obey we aint submitting unto HIM .
Number one thing , SUBMIT FIRST UNTO THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD . WHICH IS TO BELIEVE IN JESUS as the ONLY MEANS
of being made righteous , of being saved of having eternal life . THE CONTINUE IN SUBMISSION UNTO HIM
by Obeying , aka being hearers and doers of all that HE Taught . SEE how simple that truly is .
AND we have the SPIRIT , thus would we have all we need and the desire to do those things pleasing to HIM .
As i say , but i was not the first to SAY , WHO WE OBEY IS WHOSE WE ARE , WHO WE SERVE IS WHO WE BELONG TOO .
Let all the lambs who name the glorious name of JESUS depart from inquity , be exhorting one another daily
lest any does become hardened through the decietfulness of sin . AND DO SO MUCH MORE as we SEE THE GLORIOUS DAY OF OUR LORD
APPROACHING . NOW , I FEEL LIKE DANCING A JIG UNTO THE LORD . SO i think i will . March on sister .

Does God discipline us when we behave improperly?

Hebrews 5:8 says “[Jesus] learned obedience through what he suffered.”

I see God teaching us obedience through suffering. It's not that Jesus was dis-obedient and then became obedient, it just means that he moved consistently forward as he was growing from one step of obedience to another. And, all of this "learning" of Jesus obedience is gotten through ordained suffering! So wouldn't this be the same for us to do? I'm far from being obedient unto death, that I pray for stronger faith for. Jesus came into the fullness of obedience and is sitting in His former glory, amen!!

So, our discipline from God is just another way to grow in obedience...and I think His discipline is mostly through our actions in life like, we reap what we sow...maybe not today but, we do pay, and dearly for our wrong choices and will pay the consequences, while on the earth.

Yes, I think you point to something many people don't understand: "... we do pay, and dearly for our wrong choices and will pay the consequences, while on the earth."

The Bible serves no purpose if we don't get to know the Lord.
There's no way to get to know the Lord without the Bible, even the gospel is scripture.

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,
And do not return there,
But water the earth,
And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower
And bread to the eater,
11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10-11

I'll concede the Bible is very helpful, but if there were no Bible available, God could do the job himself.
Then there is no reason for the gospel, the church, or Christianity.

Romans 10:14
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?

You think God is incapable of doing the job himself?
