Someone recently suggested to me that we don't have to suffer for our sin. We all know God forgives us. Does he discipline us?

What happened to Sodom?

Why do we have floods, fires, extreme climate changes, earth quakes, etc.
Why does it say in scripture "repent and humble"?
Make no mistake, he was talking to his people.

We don't hear much preaching about these issues.
Mostly preachers give a prosperity message.

"For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?" Heb 12:6-9

You beat me to the quote, but this verse is powerful encouragement to anyone who's found that they can't "get away with sinning" and always suffer consequences. People who are never disciplined are certainly judged "later" for their sin. (They remain condemned by it. )

I personally don't think that he does but more that he allows us to suffer the consequences of our sinful actions.

1) "Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it." Hebrews 12:11

2) "But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned with the world." 1 Corinthians 11:32

3) "You have not yet resisted to the point of bloodshed in your struggle against sin. And have you forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons?

My son, do not scorn the Lord’s discipline
or give up when he corrects you.
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son he accepts.”

Endure your suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?

But if you do not experience discipline, something all sons have shared in, then you are illegitimate and are not sons."

Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life? For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness. Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your listless hands and your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but be healed." Hebrews 12:4-13

The quote from Hebrews is the one that sticks with me, but this is more comprehensive. Our society has bought into the notion that spoiling kids is good for them.

Yes, I believe that, too, though depending on how you look at it, they might be one and the same thing.

This has also crossed my mind a few times but then, I thought...we pay for the choices we make while here but, not for our salvation? As Christ of course, "paid it all" :D

I think we are saved, but the Lord will discipline us if we don't learn from our mistakes.

It really comes down to one thing. Do you believe that the scriptures are the inspired word of God, or is it okay to just make stuff up and believe in a god of your own imagination?
The word says what it says and it was never intended to be reinterpreted in any way other than by His Spirit.

Yes, he does chastise us...because he loves us. If we make foolish choices, we will pay the consequences for poor stewardship of our resources such as gambling when you have a family to take care of first. You could lose a home, maybe a marriage. Cheat on your spouse, again, could lose a marriage. Try this or that drug, won't hurt. only one time...you could lose that and much more, your life. Actions have consequences, even after we have been saved....but He still loves us :)

Discipline isn't punishment though.

The point of scripture is to lead us to God. When we walk with God, we learn.

17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. John 17:17

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. John 8:31

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. John 15:1-8

So, how are you sanctified and how do you grow without believing that which sanctifies you and gives you growth?
How do you abide in Him without abiding in His word?
How do you abide in His word without believing it?

Two disciples "walked" with Jesus on the road to Emmaus after His resurrection. They weren't given to recognize Him and were sad.
17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?” Luke 24:17
They explained why they were sad, and Jesus rebuked them for being slow to believe.
25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. Luke 24:25-27
Jesus restored and strengthened their faith by exhorting them to believe the scripture and teaching them from the same.
Scripture does more than lead us to Christ, but is the source of our faith.

14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10:14-15

נ NUN
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105
Psalm 119 runs through the Hebrew alphabet and gives inspired insight to every letter.
"Nun" means "perpetuity" (eternally.)

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 4:4
So, how do you live by what you don't believe?

Believe what you want, but I'll stick with Jesus and the word of God.

Paul taught us to pray constantly (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Praying is a combination of speaking to the Lord and listening to the Lord. It would seem to me that if we listen to the Lord, we will learn things.

If you're hearing a voice speaking back when you pray, it might be the Lord, but how would you even know if you're not at least familiar with what He's said in His written word.
The Lord primarily speaks through scripture whether while reading or as recalled and applied to life. Direct conversation is not the norm, but the exception and indistinguishable from a psychotic break.

If you're praying and not paying attention to what the Lord is telling you, then half the battle is lost. We learn to discern the Lord's voice as we mature.
