No, the verse "means" EXACTLY what it says.
Yes, it does, but you are not understanding what it says. You are taking everything hyper-literally while using ZERO spiritual discernment to see what is actually being said. John 3:16-18 indicates that only those who believe will have eternal life while those who don't are condemned. Does that passage not mean EXACTLY what it says? Not according to you.

We who look to Christ purify ourselves. Everyone else will be purified, but it won't be nice and easy for them as it is for us. Believers in Jesus are SAVED from that unpleasant but necessary experience and process.

1 John 3:3 esv
And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

indicates that only those who believe will have eternal life
That's a mistranslation.

Here is the accurate translation.

John 3:16-18

Young's Literal Translation

16 for God did so love the world, that His Son -- the only begotten -- He gave, that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during.
17 For God did not send His Son to the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him;
18 he who is believing in him is not judged, but he who is not believing hath been judged already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3:16-18

Young's Literal Translation

16 for God did so love the world, that His Son -- the only begotten -- He gave, that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during.
17 For God did not send His Son to the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him;

What in the world is your point here? Are you trying to say that those who believe in Jesus won't have eternal life?

Unbelievers and even unfaithful Christians are sent to the LOF but it is for an "age" or a period of time. You have been misinformed by mistranslations.
That is not what scripture teaches at all. You are deceived. Pray for wisdom (James 1:5-7).

It's exactly what scripture teaches.

Matthew 25:46

Young's Literal Translation

46 And these shall go away to punishment age-during, but the righteous to life age-during.'
So, what does "age-during" mean in your mind? We know the righteous will inherit eternal life, so why would it mean anything but that?

Right. Is that not what John 3:16 is saying?
Of course.

What you might not know is that God works on us through ages. People die and either go to Heaven or to the Lake of Fire. Where you and I apparently differ is that you believe it is FOREVER and that it is strictly punishment whereas I believe the scriptures demonstrate that it's for this age and it is corrective in addition to being punitive.

In other words, we must believe in Jesus in order for Jesus to save us from God, because if we don't believe in and follow Jesus, God will torture us for eternity.
Are you trying to tell me what I believe? That seems to be a common theme on this forum. Let me tell you what I believe instead. I don't believe that God tortures unbelievers for eternity. I believe that they will be separated from His presence for eternity and they will be in torment in the sense of regretting missing out on what God had offered them.

2 Thessalonians 1:6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might...

Of course.
So, you agree that John 3:16 says that those who believe will receive eternal life. Keep reading from there and you should see that those who do not believe will not receive eternal life and instead are condemned.

Why would God only punish those who have rejected Him for a limited amount of time? Why would He want those who have rejected Him repeatedly and indicated that they don't want any part of serving and obeying Him to ever be with Him in His kingdom? You make it as if those people are eventually going to be forced to love Him and obey Him? How can that be forced? You want to let those people off the hook, but scripture does not do that. They will be separated from God forever.

It was always understood by the apostles that ALL would eventually be with God. The only question was whether or not souls would purify themselves through their belief in Christ or if they would be condemned to the LOF for the remainder of "the age" or perhaps a period of time in the age.

In the end, ALL will be resurrected and given to God the Father.

Who are the bad people?

See, its not the "bad" who are in hell, as "all have sinned"......... its the unbelieving who died and went there today, ... these.
