I thought this might be an interesting topic and see different opinions.

To me where to start is in reading the 4 Gospels, I would start in the book of John. To me you can't know Jesus till you read His words you can't depend on just hearing other people. Then He will bring them to your remembrance.

What would you tell a New Christian as to where to start and what the goal is?
The goal of disciple?

Matthew 16:24 (KJV) Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

The goal of a sheep with the Lord as only shepherd to personally hear Him?

John 10:27 (KJV) My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Is there a difference between being a sheep and being a disciple?
What means: disciple? vs being a sheep?
Do sheep have eternal life? or do you have to be a disciple?

Reader,

Before Jesus was Crucified, there were many disciples who followed Jesus and some left, and some were told this...

"Depart from me, i never knew you"...

So, that is a DISCIPLE...and Jesus said that to become one of those you "if you keep my words, you are my disciple, indeed"..

Now, why is that not speaking about a Christian?

Well, for one thing, when Jesus said that, He had not died on The Cross yet.. so, the Cross had not Begun the "Church" yet.

See.. a CHRISTian is a BORN AGAIN = SON of GOD.. a DAUGHTER of God........, which is so much more than just being a "disciple".

In fact, you can be a disciple of Christ and not be born again, and be told to "Depart i never knew you"... as Jesus will say that to any disciple who is not "BORN AGAIN".

But here is the "flip"..

If you are a born again Christian.........and not just water baptized and very religious... then by becoming a Son-Daughter of God "In Christ" as "one with God", you are now become a real disciple whom Jesus "KNOWS"., and you will never be told to "depart".
Jesus said.. "ALL who believe in me, i give unto you Eternal Life, and you shall never go to Hell (perish)"
In Fact Jesus told YOU, if you are born again, that "I will never leave you, or forsake you".. and that makes sense, as "Christ IN YOU< the Hope of Glory" proves He's not going anywhere, but you are...Reader..... You're going to Heaven.. if you are born again.

Thanks, but to me you are pointing people to be born again.. which I understand, but what would you say and how to direct someone to be born again. Is it a process, what is it and what does someone do seeking it? So the person says I want that, what is it and how do I get it? Where do they start?

Oh haha and I found this shepherd calling his sheep clip I thought was pretty cool, they pay no attention to others calling them.

but what would you say and how to direct someone to be born again.

"all that call on the name of Jesus shall be saved"

Jesus said """""All that believe in me i give unto them eternal life and they shall never go to Hell (perish).""

""""to them (the believers) that worketh not, but believeth on Him that >>>justifieth the ungodly,<<<< his faith is counted for righteousness."""

You take Jesus by faith, God takes you by forgiving all sins and giving you a spiritual birth "in Christ", as "Born again"

Is it a process, what is it and what does someone do seeking it?

Salvation is literally to be eternally forgiven all sin, and then given a spiritual birth by God's Holy Spirit..... so that the believer eternally becomes "born again", as a "new Creation in Christ".

Reader...

Did you trust in Christ alone to be your Savior because you understood you are a sinner needing to be forgiven?

Or, were you told that if you are water baptized, then all your sins were//are washed away in the water?

Hey Cyd:

All believers are meant to be sheep, as then and today. And today, technically speaking, virtually all are not strictly speaking, disciples.

A disciple had a specific purpose in the times of Christ, only. It was basically to reach out to the known world with the gospel for salvation. And that was done by the end of the 1st century.

I believe many folks might confuse what is a disciple today with what it means to be growing Christlike, as sheep as part of the Body.

Read John 14:6

Jesus said to us....if you want to go to heaven, then I AM the only way to the FATHER.. you must come by ME..

Jesus is the WAY...

Jesus is : Salvation

And that is because God provided Jesus to us, as the ONLY WAY God will accept us, and keep us.

Lets back up....

What is the one issue that every human being has, that prevents God from being their Father... that prevents us all from being JOINED To Him, forever?

A.) Our SIN.

See, its our life of sinning, our SIN< that prevents HOLY GOD from having us as His Children, His FAMILY.

So, God resolved this "sin issue" for us..

How?

God sent SINLESS Jesus to the Cross to die for all our SIN... .. Jesus took our sin, upon Himself and died for them all = so that God could forgive us FOREVER...Forever, forever... for eternity.

See that Cross of Christ?
That is God forgiving all our sin, because Jesus has DIED for them all...

And a person says....>>>"but i dont deserve that "... "i dont deserve to be forgiven"..

And God says... "Yes you do... and to prove it, and to prove my eternal love for you, my Son has died for all your sin"..

= "BECAUSE I LOVE YOU THAT MUCH..."" = So, trust in my Son, believe in my Son Jesus...give me your faith in my Son... Take my Son into your heart, and i will forgive all your sin and i will SAVE YOU right now, and FOREVER".

That is great but most don't do that... they don't back up, someone would have to explain things... now question: can you find this out by reading the gospels? I would approach things a bit different.. I would show them in the book of Matthew where Jesus himself started by telling us to repent.

I suppose sheep and disciples are synonymous. Jesus is the shepherd, sheep follow the shepherd. Disciples follow Jesus.

What does it mean to follow Jesus? Different things to different people, I suppose.

1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

Steven you could do better than that verse wow anyone can follow any person even Paul. You are telling me you prefer to follow Paul is he your shepherd?
1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJV) Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

Which is why I follow Christ not Paul, to me there is a difference. I am a Berian with any and all writings.

More like a Berean with any and all misspellings. - LOL

Acts 17:11 NIV
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica,
for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures
every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Paul is actually easier to follow than Christ. IMHO

The whole point of a rabbi/disciple relationship is for the rabbi to teach his disciples how to walk in obedience to the Torah by word and by example so that they can be equipped to make their own disciples to teach how to walk in obedience to the Torah. In Matthew 4:15-23, Christ began his ministry with the Gospel message to repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand, which was a light to the Gentiles, and the Torah was how his audience knew what sin is (Romans 3:20), so repenting from our disobedience to it is a central part of the Gospel message. Furthermore, Christ set a perfect example for us to follow of how to practice Judaism by walking in sinless obedience to the Torah and as his followers we are told to follow his example (1 Peter 2:21-22) and that those who are in Christ are obligated to walk in the same way he walked (1 John 2:6).

In 1 John 2:6, those who say that they know Jesus, but don't obey his commands are liars, in 1 John 3:4-6, those who continue to practice disobedience to the Torah have neither seen nor known him, and in Matthew 7:23, Jesus said that he would tell those who are workers of lawlessness to depart form him because he never knew them. In Exodus 33:13, Moses wanted God to be gracious to him by teaching him to walk in His way that he and Israel might know Him and in 1 Kings 2:1-3, God taught how to walk in His way through the Torah, so the goal of the Torah is to teach us how to know God and Jesus, which is eternal life (John 17:3), which is also why Jesus said that the way to inherit eternal life is by obeying the greatest two commandments of the Torah (Luke 10:25-28).

Interesting to me it is just the opposite. Yeshua Jesus made things simple plus He is the one to give you peace and rest.. His yoke is easy burden light.
How are you doing on your list?

Matthew 10:8 NIV
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons.
Freely you have received; freely give.
