The New covenant actually started in Old Testament times. Here's the prophet Jeremiah talking about it:
Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
This "new" covenant actually started right after the return from Babylon. It can be observed historically that the Jews after the captivity stopped worshiping idols and foreign gods almost completely.
But what Doug would like to convince you, is that Jesus was an Old Testament prophet, that Paul preached an entirely different gospel, and that you should follow Paul rather than Jesus. This, of course, is a little crazy, since Paul himself warns us not to do that.
I’m so confused with what you both are saying. This New covenant God will make writing not in tables made of stone, but the Spirit of God writes them on fleshly tables of the heart.
Hebrews 7:20-28 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, [21] but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, 'You are a priest forever.'" [22]
This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. [23] The former priests were many in number, because
they were prevented by death from continuing in office, [24] but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. [25] Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. [26] For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. [27] He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. [28] For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests,
but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
Hebrews 8:4-8 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: [5]
Who serve unto the example and
shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. [6]
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. [7] For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. [8] For finding fault with them, he saith,
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new (better) covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
2 Corinthians 3:2-6
You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: [3] Forasmuch as you are
manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. [4] And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: [5] Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; [6]
Who also has made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter kills , but
the spirit giveth life.
This makes Jesus the guarantor of
a better covenant.
But now hath he obtained
a more excellent ministry (who has also made us able ministers of the New Testament), by how much also he is the mediator of
a better covenant, which was established upon
better promises.
As promised …Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will make a new (better) covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
manifestly declared to be
the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; <written on the inwards parts, within the heart.
the letter kills , but the spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
^all that is why I’m confused by what you both say. Did God do what He promised He would do in making a better (new)covenant established on better promises, with a better Ministry given which is the Ministration of the Spirit which kills not but gives Life? having a High Priest over the House of God which
is not prevented by death which makes Him different from all men with infirmities prevented by death from continuing.
