Obviously Thursday this week in the U.K. is an ordinary day, but It’s special for most of you here, so I guess I wondered how you will all be celebrating. Also wanted to send out a special ‘ thinking of you ‘ to members who have lost loved ones over this past year. I know how hard I found Christmas that first year when my mum passed.

So do you all get the day off, what we would call a bank holiday. ?

I don't "work" away from home anymore, but all of my close family has the day off and will be with us. My wife will not be doing much compared to past years, but she will still be baking pecan and pumpkin pies. Other younger ones will be keeping the tradition with a large turkey and a ham. Mashed potatoes and gravy along with sweet potatoes topped with melted marshmellows are couple of the many side dishes.

As the oldest one, they will expect me to bless the food and the people. It should be a good day remembering God and family and friends.

It is a Federal Holiday proclaimed by Abe Lincoln. Everyone gets a day off, and If your turkey gets burnt, the Chinese restaurant is still open.
If you have Turkey on thanksgiving what do you have at Christmas?
We have Turkey at Christmas , with roast potatoes, veg and stuffing

For Christmas, it could be turkey, but Baked ham is usual. Baked potatoes, some vegetables. Ham sandwiches later. Christmas and Thanksgiving meals have similar foods over here. There is a tradition of New Year's Eve breakfast too.

We have hams and cold meat , salads ect on Boxing Day. I don’t think England has traditions with food on News Years day. Scotland have Hogmanay ( News years Eve onwards ) They have street parties and celebrations, but celebrate Christmas in the usual way.
I always use New Year’s Eve as a time of reflection on the last 12months

I got somewhere between 30-40 family members and friends showing up Thursday.
Should be the normal chaos and fun all at the same time.

On your boxing day, it's called Christmas returns over here. Yes, its a fast food day, some else has to cook.

It’s usually ‘ leftovers ‘ here, but definitely a more relaxed day. Also its A day of sports, football matches and horse racing on tv.

The day after Christmas can be hectic and lots of traffic. But, football is on, on Thanksgiving too. I'm not to much into sports now days, but I played lots of sports in my younger years.

Yes at least one day off depending on your employer of course . Children out of school starting Thanksgiving day till the following Monday , pretty much the rule .
At one time in my part of the USA anyway no stores or restaurants were open a Thanksgiving but now most of the retail stores are open at least part of Thanksgiving day to get the early Black Friday shoppers , I think the retailers could wait , but oh well . Shopping on Black Friday is an experience best avoided hlf .
A local buffet type restaurant is usually open close to me and we sometimes eat their meal of traditional Thanksgiving fare . We eat with other family that did not plan their own at home dinning . No dishes to wash ! !

@Rita have you ever ate cornbread dressing with cranberry sauce ? This a turkey side dish on Thanksgiving .

Black Friday hit our shores a few years back, now it runs for quite a few weeks in many different stores and online, especially with Amazon.co.uk - think it ends on the 2nd Dec.
No , don’t even know what cornbread is, or whether it would have a different name over here- we have cranberry sauce
I just looked it up and we don’t have it over here xx
We do often have a bread sauce with Turkey , but I must admit I am not keen on it.

This is the first Thanksgiving and Christmas since our son died. It's going to be really hard on The Sweet Lady. :disrelieved:.
