This past weekend, a Calvinist explained to me that she left the Methodists after concluding that they weren’t a church, since they didn’t preach the pure word of God. To Catholic ears, this sort of claim can sound pretty strange, so I wanted to explain what Calvinists mean by this, and why it’s wrong.

I. What’s Meant
In the Sixteenth Century, the Reformers faced a serious problem. They believed, as John Calvin wrote in Book IV, Chapter I of Institutes of the Christian Religion, that “beyond the pale of the Church no forgiveness of sins, no salvation, can be hoped for.” Since Calvin and others were breaking away from the visible Church, this doctrine posed a serious hurdle. After all, they appeared to be condemning themselves with their own words.

So what they did is redefine what “Church” means. The clearest example of this is from the Dutch Calvinist Belgic Confession (1567):

So it’s only the true Church if the preaching of the Gospel and administration of sacraments are pure, and church discipline is used for correcting faults. Calvin only believed in two marks of the Church: “the preaching of the word and the observance of the sacraments.” He argued that to lose these two marks would “destroy the true and genuine distinction of the Church”:

Thus, he argued, Catholicism wasn’t the true Church, because the Sacraments and preaching were all wrong. In the 1559 French Confession of Faith (PDF), he put it like this:

Thus, schism from the visible Church was not only permissible, but necessary, since the Church had (according to Calvin) stopped being part of the true Church.

II. Why It’s Wrong
Catholics will readily agree that good preaching, the proper administration of the Sacraments, and Church discipline are important parts of the life of the Church. A church that fails to do these things fails the flock in important ways. But here’s the important caveat: a church that fails in these ways doesn’t cease to be part of the Church. We can see this clearly from Scripture. In Revelation 2-3, Jesus delivers a message through St. John to the seven churches of Asia Minor (see Rev. 1:17-20). In Revelation 2:12-17, we hear this message to the Church in Pergamum:

In other words, the Church in Pergamum both (1) failed to enforce Church discipline (as did the Church in Thyatira — see Rev. 2:20), and (2) apparently permitted heretical (Nicolatan) teachings.

That is, it failed to meet two of the standards that the Belgic confession claims are basic marks of the Church. And yet Jesus still calls it a church. He even says that despite these problems, the local church (as a whole) has remained “true to My Name.” (Rev. 2:13).

So plainly, while the failure to enforce Church discipline, and to ensure that heresy isn’t preached are important tasks of the Church (Jesus is rebuking them for these failures, after all), they don’t render the Church not the Church. And if that’s true on the local level, it’s certainly true on the global.
continued...
Just to let you in on a little secrete . Even the very false joseph smith
could quoate certain truths about the decay of the churches in his time , SURE DONT MEAN
he should ever have been followed .
The problem with the protestant churches DOES NOT need to be corrected from one who is within
a very dangerous place himself . Rather let me take care of the protestants , oh i will do all
to get folks back into the bible and far from a dangerous place . Meanwhile
i suggest the same for you my friend . Because out of great love and deep concern for you , i must warn you
you are not at all in safe place . And both places are now going under the influence
of the lie that will again merge them and the other relgions too , under what they all beleive will be GOD and HIS LOVE .
only IT WONT BE . Let us bible up and get busy learning for ourselves and very fast too .

epilogue from post #499:

III. The True Marks of the Church, And Why They Matter
The (Calvinist) Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) acknowledges that:

There are three important points to be made here.

  1. There are distinctive marks that the true Church must hold to, laid out by the Nicene Creed. The Creed, at the heart of orthodox Christianity, proclaims a belief in “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.” These are the Four Marks of the Church, and the Fathers point to them constantly. The True Church is a single Institution, is Holy, is Catholic, and has Apostolic Succession. Historically, there’s no real question that the Nicene Fathers were referring to the visible Church, the very Church Calvin and the other Reformers broke away from and denied.
  2. The Reformers are the source of these new “Marks”: solid preaching, proper administration of the sacraments, and Church discipline faithfully exercised. And the Calvinists are divided over what these new Marks are, and how many there are. The Belgic Confession and the Orthodox Presbterian Church list these three, while Calvin himself listed only two (excluding Church discipline). Some Reformed Evangelicals now claim that there are nine marks (none of which are the four identified by the Nicene Creed). Yet we’ve already seen from Scripture that the Church remains the Church even where She fails to deliver on one of these two (or three, or nine) categories.
  3. The new “Marks” are divisive and unhelpful: The OPC notes that “many sects claim the name “church,”” but as an excuse for using the new “Marks.” But these sects can’t credibly claim Apostolic Succession or Catholicity or Oneness. But every sect can (and does) claim proper preaching, sacraments, and Church discipline. We think Presbyterians have too few sacraments. They think we have too many. So the new “Marks” provide no serious basis for distinguishing between the Church and schismatics or heretics. It quickly devolves into “they disagree with me, so they’re not really the Church.”
In fact, the new “Marks” were made for precisely that purpose. Calvin and the Reformers wanted to break away from the visible Church, and by creating heightened standards (including vague and impossible to prove or disprove criteria), they were able to justify it.

Let’s use divorce as a parallel. There’s no question that God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) and totally forbids it (Mark 10:9; Luke 16:18). But if you really wanted to divorce your husband, all you’d have to do is create a new checklist, claiming that a true husband gives his life up for his wife (Ephesians 5:25). So unless your husband has risked martyrdom for you, he’s not really your husband, so you’re free to leave.

Do you see the error there? A husband should do x, y, and z. But that doesn’t mean he ceases to be your husband if he doesn’t, or that you get to divorce him if he doesn’t. There is such a thing as a lousy husband. By adding more and more things to the list of what it takes to be a true husband, you may sound pious, but you’re really just adding more and more excuses for divorce.

Likewise, the Church has some lousy ministers. There are bad homilies, there are times when heresy has sprung up, and the Church has been slow in cracking down. And there are times when there are even invalid Sacraments: a heretical priest who refuses to use the Trinitarian formula, or changes the words of consecration. But those people are, short of excommunication, still a part of the Church. Judas was a bad Apostle. But he was still an Apostle, according to Scripture (Acts 1:20; Matthew 10:1-4).

And of course, even Reformed churches suffer from bad homilies, lax ministers, and the like. For example, Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has complained that Church discipline is “the missing Mark,” in that it’s so rarely exercised in the modern world. In other words, even most Reformed churches don’t meet the Reformed definition of Church. So this vague and heightened definition destroys the Church, rather than building it up, or locating it.

IV. Conclusion
Hopefully, this basic outline establishes a few things.

  1. The Church, from the beginning, has believed that there are four essential Marks by which we can know the true Church: One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.
  2. The Catholic Church possesses all four, in the sense understood by the Fathers of the Council.
  3. Protestant churches don’t, since the Reformers deliberately broke the Oneness of the Church, and end Apostolic Succession.
  4. To justify these schisms, the Reformers invented new criteria that the Church must hold to, but they contradicted one another and the Church Fathers in so doing.
  5. These new standards are contrary to the Bible, are subjective, and have helped destroy the Oneness that the Nicene Creed calls for, and that Christ calls for (John 17:20-23).
So if you’re looking to find the fullness of the Church established by Christ, look for the One that can credibly claim to be the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.
Lots can try and credibly claim my friend .
but even they have led their own astray through the doctrines and precepts of men .
So lets rewrite your last sentence .
SO if your looking and seeking for a true church , YOU BESS BE IN YOUR BIBLE LEARNING
for many can cliam to be such a place and even have creeds and true words
But they sure aint leading you into the TRUTH . GET IN THE BIBLE
and the LORD will lead the true lambs . True men will speak according to HIS WORD
and not according to their own stuff .
And on true men will feed their people the true words of Christ and of the apostels and all good sound biblical doctrine .
And what they teach will not explain away , omit , try to change and etc , What was already written .
And on that note i leave us with the wisest words of all , FROM JESUS HIMSELF
who once warned HIS own . BEWARE of men who love to dress up and wear long fancy clothes
who love to have the pre emeince , to be seen of men , flattering titles , YOU KNOW such as MOST HOLY FATHER
MOST HOLY Reverand , and etc . DO NOT HEED such . So i suggest we all go and do likewise .

Just because someone claims something does not mean they have or are that thing.... Idolatry is so, so insidious. There is certainly a lot of that out there, by different groups and organizations of all kinds.

I say if you're looking to find the fullness of the Church established by Christ, know that if you gather with even one or two in the name of Christ Jesus and worship in Spirit and truth, you are certainly a part of it, and share fully in it by the Spirit, now in spirit but one great day ~ when our faith is sight ~ in person with Christ Himself.

Soli Deo Gloria!

Grace and peace to all.

Yes, Jesus BUILDS the Church, He doesn't build junk that would require a re-build.

Mmm, not quite. God didn't DECLARE it, He REVEALED it to a sinful human who declared it. Obviously, God revealed Jesus' identity to Peter, I don't think God sent Peter a text message to his brain, it must go deeper than that. It's a divine revelation to Peter's heart, mind and soul. I think you would agree with that.
And thereafter…ONLY IF descending generational pastors, preachers, bishops, deacons, congregation….can maintain THAT ROCK to not be swayed otherwise.
Good point.
“All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16–17).

This passage doesn’t teach formal sufficiency, which excludes a binding, authoritative role for Tradition and Church. Protestants extrapolate onto the text what isn’t there. If we look at the overall context of this passage, we can see that Paul makes reference to oral Tradition three times (cf. 2 Tim. 1:13–14; 2:2; 3:14). Sadly, that's not enough for some people.
And to use an analogy, let’s examine a similar passage:

“And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” (Eph. 4:11–15).

If 2 Timothy 3 proves the sole sufficiency of Scripture, then, by analogy, Ephesians 4 would likewise prove the sufficiency of pastors and teachers for the attainment of Christian perfection. In Ephesians 4, the Christian believer is equipped, built up, brought into unity and mature manhood, and even preserved from doctrinal confusion by means of the teaching function of the Church. This is a far stronger statement of the perfecting of the saints than 2 Timothy 3, yet it does not even mention Scripture.

So if all non-scriptural elements are excluded in 2 Timothy, then, by analogy, Scripture would logically have to be excluded in Ephesians. It is far more reasonable to recognize that the absence of one or more elements in one passage does not mean that they are nonexistent. The Church and Scripture are both equally necessary and important for teaching.

Yea, like the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox church who blesses bombs to blow up a children's hospital.

Agreed, but the divine attributes or "marks" for two or three gathered in His name are one, holy, catholic and apostolic. What happens if a church is weak or missing one altogether? Do you see the problem here???

Mmm, not quite. God didn't DECLARE it, He REVEALED it to a sinful human who declared it.

I would not agree…”declared / revealed” as either or the works of God.
Whether or not a man SEES Gods words,
Or man HEARS Gods words…
Fact is the words ARE Gods.
Fact is God Himself has revealed He would PUT HIS OWN WORDS “IN” A mans mouth.
The man…thereafter can keep Gods words “in his own mouth..or freely speak Gods words”.

“All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16–17).

Yes.

This passage doesn’t teach formal sufficiency, which excludes a binding, authoritative role for Tradition and Church.

“Formal sufficiency”…is your KEY words to imply “EXCLUSIVE” authority to bind and loose .. stands alone with THE “formal” CHURCH…and TRADITION that it is the “formal” CHURCH alone that are the Teachers of Gods word….

Protestants extrapolate onto the text what isn’t there.

I claim no particular denomination…
I agree…there is a “FORMAL” Church…(a literal building) … and “FORMAL” appointed teachers (typically holding titles)…

I would say it appears YOUR exclusive VIEW, is revealed primarily in…
Matt Chapter 16.

However…I do not agree your view (while FORMAL)…IS EXCLUSIVE as you imply

While Matt. Chapter 16…IS in concert with your point…

Aside from the FORMAL .. BUILDING called a Temple /Church…Gods Temple, and it’s Head Teacher….the Lords Church, and it’s Head Teacher……. IS with-IN a man
Turn to 1 Cor 3:16

With- IN WHAT (who) man?

Scripture notifies us….
Turn to Matt chapter 18…
“A man OF God”.
A man OF God, has the Church, the Head Teacher WITH-IN him.
* WITHOUT….FORMAL Title of “prophet, bishop, deacon, etc.”…
* He DOES have Title….of “man of God”, “converted”, ‘born-again in the Spirit of God”, “IN Christ”, “Christ IN him”, “son of God”….
* He needs NOT…a formal Building…a formal appointed title by men, a large congregation…To teach, to preach, to hold authority to bind (notifying a person who testifies they repent, that they surrender their life unto the Lord God that God is Faithful and gives to them His Gift of Salvation….or to loose (hearing their testimony, they reject repenting and reject surrendering their life unto the Lord God).

IOW…while you imply the Church Building and Church Building appointed Titled men ARE Exclusive ministers and authorities say of Gods Word…
I disagree.

ANY…”man of God” is wholly suited and equipped and authorized”… where 2 or 3 are gathered…to minister the Word of God to such man….to witness a mans repentance…and witness a mans surrendering of his Life unto the Lord God….and BIND….revealing to THAT man….the Lord Gods Gift of Salvation has been given Him…and IS SEALED unto that man…IN the Lambs BOOK of LIFE…IN Heaven.

YES….A man WHO HAS received his own Gift of the Lord Gods SALVATION….having the authority to minister and teach others….Does not “automatically” MEAN that man “MUST” exercise his authority and TEACH others.

Some men have circumstantial opportunities…travel, easily meet lots of people, and such.
Some men are hermits, shut-in’s, mute, shy, poor cognitive skills and such.

A Believer is ONE THING….(not yet fully equipped)
A CONVERTED Believer is ENTIRELY ANOTHER THING. (Wholly equipped)

Cherry-Picking…”typically”…(more-so by Catholic “debaters”) point out, “cherry-picking”….as a derogatory inference.

Personally, I find “cherry-picking” Scriptures an absolute Necessity, to Express, what exactly DOES APPLY IN Context of a discussion.

All Scripture IS TRUE….yet NOT ALL Scripture is APPLICABLE in Every scenario.

You…cherry-picked…Matt 16…to broadly present the authority of An established Church Building….and the Appointed titled men “preachers, teachers” “bishops”, etc. within such specific Church…

THAT…^ does not apply to me.

I cherry-picked…Matt 18..to broadly present the authority of a “man of God”…a man whom the Church IS With-IN…a man whom the Lord Gods Spirit IS WITH-IN….a man whom the HEAD teacher above ALL, is IN…

THAT….^ does apply to me.

It is NOT….and annology of either / or.
It is NOT…THIS, “therefore” can not BE “THAT”.

Glory to God,
Taken

You wrote . JESUS builds the church , he dont build junk that require a rebuild .
SO THEN WHY did the RCC and now even much of the protestant realm try to
re build another image of GOD through their own precepts . WHY do they try and tie the church and state as one .
THE KINGDOM that cannot be moved was and is not built by human hands .
Its above in HEAVEN and by the SPIRIT true believers are connected to it .
Men have done all for a long time to REBUILD the KINGDOM , Rebuild another image
to shape and to make a religion that misleads folks into ditches and mire .
Many from both camps have believed their men as the infallible
their scholars as the infallible . SHOULD have stuck to the infallible GOD inspired words in that bible .
And now they believe more and more in this so called love which came not of GOD
but of the world as though its the infallible love of God . THEY ALL getting duped now . and all
will merge as one with the HARLOT . well , all cept the true lambs .
But by that time , by the time the delusion of the Harlots cry for inclusion has gathered them in large
TRUE Lambs will then be seen as ONLY IN THE WAY and its time for another CRUSADE to rid the earth
of the non conforming . Right now we in the ecuminical phase
but its almost at the tipping point to where it will soon become the CONFORM or perish phase . You all
have no idea what most are now following . My advice , GET IN THE BIBLE for YOU .

What occured in germany is now occuring in the western socities and socities of the world .
One might ponder how on earth could millions of jews have been killed .
WELL it starts by using the bad examples of the jews
and says things that make it seem as all jews are like that .
JUST like they do with FUNDAMENTAL TRUE BIBLE BELIEVING LAMBS
they use the bad seeds to teach all that ALL the true bible beleivers are bad .
And soon another hitler will arise and the merged religions
will heed its cry to rid their mother earth of all these dangerous fundamental christains .
WE GETTING DUPED folks .
THEY used propoganda about the jews , they used bad examples of jews
to convince germany ALL JEWS were bad .
OOOPS HISTORY REPEATS and the CHURCHES fall for it .

No. <chuckle> Churches don't have divine attributes or marks. <smile> But God does inhabit the praises of His people, His Israel (Psalm 22:3).

When Saul (St. Paul by his Hebrew name) was going around persecuting Christians, Jesus knocked him off his horse and asked him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?" (Acts 9:4) Note that Jesus didn't ask him, "...why do you persecute My Church?" which he was doing, but "...why do you persecute Me?" Jesus identifies as one with His Church! Persecute Christ's Church by lying and untruths, and you're doing the same to Christ. Christ founded a visible Church with a visible heirarchy to run it, giving it His godly authority here on earth. It has existed the entire time since Christ and it accounts for the majority of Christians in all of Christianity.

Would have rebuked the RCC out of town . NOW till you realize that , you in dire danger .
But now , i dont want you to think i speak only against the RCC
Go around and ask folks on this site about me . You gonna find out i warn out against any and all falsehoods .
NOW ITS BIBLE TIME
and as i tell the protestant realm so i say to the catholic one , YOU all been duped my dear friends .
Now i also want you to do something FIRST .
YOU ask anyone on this site if i ever have pointed to me , Or rather did i beg and plead to get IN THAT BIBLE .
Now , of course this has made me an enemy of almost all within even the realm of christendom .
Even though i love them , heck i love the peoples . But man the more one speaks truth
the more those that have been influenced by the wrong precepts make them out to be an enemy .
BIBLE TIME .
Calivin taught the bible through his own concepts , some were true , some were big time false
As do many .
BUT I SAY READ THINE BIBLE for THYSELF . enjoy the form of early modern to late middle english of thine and thyself .
Sure i could have said YOUR and YOURSELF . BIBLE TIME .
NEVER HEED ME or any man who says you cannot truly learn it for you without our guidance . NEVER BUY THAT LIE .
DONT DO IT . NOW IF I were to ever SAY that line to any , I want you to rebuke me very very very harshly too .
GET IN THAT BIBLE and YOU READ IT and never buy the lie of men who
always use the bad seeds as an example to try and get you to believe you cannot really learn the bible for yourself .
DO NOT BUY THE LIE .

Pull up a chair . please sit down . Know and understand what i am about to tell you is not to boast in me , in this flea .
JUST yesterday, as i did my laundry at the ol laundry matt .
Me and a dear fellow , who owns said laundry matt , were talking bout the things of the LORD .
Now He told me this ,
He said i always like talking to you , you know much more than i do about the bible .
IMMEDIATELY i was led to give him this response .
It might be true that i do know more because by the grace of GOD He has had me in that book daily for hours
for over eighteen years . BUT YOU , ME and no man is infallible . That there are men out there
who can quoate the scrips big time but lead you away from the TRUTH .
You must stay in your bible and test me and all men and do so all the time .
Cause no man is infallible , But the WORD and words GOD inspired are INFALLIBLE .
And that GOD can also use you dear sir to correct me or to show me things as well .
WE MUST TEST ALL , BUT WE MUST DO SO AGAINST THE WRITTEN WORDS of GOD IN THAT BIBLE .
TO which he said , YOU are right . OH BOY my heart was happy to hear that response he gave .
NOW ITS BIBLE TIME FOLKS . Ya leaders have decieved ya for years and the years go back into decades
and through centuries . BIBLE TIME pardner . BIBLE TIME .
Dont let the words of men you cling so hard too , FOOL YOU . they use examples of bad seeds
to try and explain to those who sit under them , WHY THEY THEMSELVES cannot learn the bible for themselves .
YOU READ FOR YOU . love it , embrace it , rejoice in it , THE TRUTH shall do for you
what these men did not do for you , IT WILL . OPEN THINE EYES .

Oh, idolatry manifests itself in all kinds of ways, very, very often even despite the best of intentions...

No. <chuckle> Churches don't have divine attributes or marks. <smile> But God does inhabit the praises of His people, His Israel (Psalm 22:3).

Grace and peace to you.
and now in the last hour idolatry has manifested itself huge in a wordly form of the word love .
And those who love self , SURE SEEM TO love and gather with all who love that form of love .
As they gather with rainbows , muslims , buddists and all forms of all religoins
and chant GOD is LOVE , GOD IS LOVE and about the only ones they want NUTTING to do with
are those who correct this false sin accepting broad path making way TO GOD .
AND you wanna know why men like me expose it non stop . cause it AINT THE WAY TO GOD .
ITS NOT HIS LOVE at all , it is a love that speaks certain truths such as doing good works
but it has blended in the lie . THIS gringo gonna keep exposing its false unity too .

If you believe what Christians have believed and have taught in all generations, then you're built upon the Apostles. But if you're particular faith..what you think is so important to say, is something that only began to be said in 500 AD or in 1000 AD or in 1500 AD or in 1959 AD..whatever you're in, as good as it might be, is inadequate and is something less than the church of Christ. It isn't Apostolic. There is one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and that church has been teaching the gospel and preaching the Christian faith for 2000 years. It is evangelical, but not Protestant. It is Orthodox, but not Jewish. It is Catholic, but not Roman. It is not non-denominational, it is pre-denominational. It has been believed, taught, preserved, defended, and died for. It is the Faith that has established the universe. Proclaiming the Truth since 34 AD. The Church began on the day of Pentecost after Christ's resurrection.
It is also an organism and not an organization.

It is comprised of all born again believers in all sects of Christendom.

Not all of israel is OF ISRAEL
just as not all of christendom is a christain or of CHRIST .
I suggest bibles be open , read and enjoyed and every word embraced .
Just cause the devil can appear as an angel of light dont mean HE IS OF LIGHT
and just cause his men can appear as men of righteousness within christendom , DONT MEAN THEY ARE .
MANY decievers abound in these last and final days and hours upon earth . And i do mean MANY .
