What is the "Abomination of Desolation"?

We see this verse in Daniel 9:27 (KJV)

The Jewish Rabbis have pushed the view that it was when in 167 B.C. a Greek ruler by the name of Antiochus Epiphanies set up an altar to Zeus over the altar of burnt offerings in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. He also sacrificed a pig on the altar in the Temple in Jerusalem.

But it doesn't fit, as Jesus declared it looking forward in time, not backwards, and the Jewish nation continued along with the sacrifices as we see at the beginning of Matthew 24 as Jesus was telling the disciples what was going to happen:

So lets start with what was this desolation that would befall them?

Now Jesus was talking about something that had happen before, and now was repeating again. We find what Daniel was talking about in the destruction of the first temple that caused desolation in the time of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, who took Daniel and his three friends prisoners back to Babylon.

So we get a clue as to what caused the desolation and the severity of it on the whole land. The Temple was destroyed and the people killed or taken prisoners, and the worship in Jerusalem severely affected. So what "abomination" made this "desolation" then and in the time of Jesus that would again cause the rebuilt Temple to again be destroyed, and how long would it be as we see the "seventy years" the first one lasted.

Matthew 24:15 "When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place (whoso readeth, let him understand:)"

This reverence to Daniel the prophet, Makes the book of Daniel part of the New Testament. This reference is directed to Daniel 9:27.

The "abomination" is when Satan stands in Jerusalem, and proclaims that he is God, and the world believes it. The "desolation" is an incorrect translation into the English, which should read "desolator", and Satan is the desolator that will make the claim that he is God, the true Christ. "Desolation" is a condition, in the Hebrew manuscripts it is written, "On the wings of the desolator," this is not a condition, but a entity, a person. It is through this individual, Satan that the abomination shall come from. It is the desolator [Satan] that shall cause all but the sealed of God, to become desolate, or deceived.

The Holy place is the place that the temple sits, and this is the subject for the very first, when the buildings of the temple were observed by the disciples, and the question of what it would be like at His second advent. This is where the desolation [Satan, the Antichrist] shall sit on mount Zion, making his abominations, or statements that he is the Christ.

The world will be deceived when Satan claims himself to be Christ, for he does have supernatural powers, and he will use them to to draw the peoples of the world to come to peace. He will say, I am Jesus whom ye have been waiting for, and I have come to bring peace to the world, and the world will be brought to peace and prosperity by Satan, the Antichrist.

But it doesn't fit

Based on my studies, I think the only thing it can be is a statue/image or even a holographic image of the “man” who will be known, in Christian circles as the anti-Christ. Let’s see what the bible has to say about it.

Dan. 11:31 – “And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate."

Dan. 12:11 – “And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.”

I think the terms “place” and “set up” imply an inanimate object being erected and positioned in a specific spot. What’s the next verse? Matt. 24:15 – “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)” Not to definitive. This could apply to a man or an image.

The next possible reference is found in 2 Thess. 2:4 – “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”

A lot of folks would read this scripture and say, “See this must be the abomination of desolation (a of d)? It’s a man sitting in the place of God.” However, within the context, the a/of d is never used to describe this event.

Are there other scriptures that might narrow the focus? Yes and they are all in Revelations.

Rev. 13:14 – “And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.”

There are many definitions of the word “make” and one of them is “raising up”. The rest of the vss. describe them as two separate things, “the beast and his image” or other words to that effect.

Rev. 14:9,11 – “And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand…11)” And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.”

Rev. 15:2 – “And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.”

Rev. 16:2 – “And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.”

Rev. 20:4 – “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”

If we believe that this is indeed a statue or idol, when will this occur? What is the timing of Rev. 13:14? Most people assume this occurs at the mid-point of the 70th week. Why? Because the timing of these passages does seem to imply it. Rev. 12:14 – “And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time (1260 days), from the face of the serpent.”

Rev. 13:5 – “And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.”

Let us also not forget Dan. 9:27 – “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

Most folks believe the emboldened phrase means the exact middle of the week, the 1261st day. I don’t believe that to be true. While the word “chetsiy” (H2677) translated as “midst” can be defined as “half” or the “middle” it can also be used for “part”. Usually, it is translated as “half” when used as a measurement or counting something and by far this word is defined as “half” in the majority of times it is used which is close to 100 times. It is translated as “part” 3 times and “midst” 6 times and “middle” once. It is also the word used when writing “mid”night (twice). Let’s take a look at an example of when it is translated as “midst”.

Josh. 10:13 – “And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.”

I don’t believe this is implying the exact middle of the sky, just generally, somewhere up in the sky as it didn’t continue its movement towards sunset. I like to use this analogy. Let’s say there is a bible chapter with 19 verses. We have a first verse (1) a last verse (19) and a middle verse (10) but all the verses from 2-18 can be considered the “midst” of the chapter.

there are three Abomination which Daniel the prophet spoke of, which brought forth Desolation. and Each of these Abomination bring with it Judgment.
The First Abomination: Breaking The Sabbath Brought Desolation

what makes the Desolation? A lying tongue, The preaching or teaching of another or false gospel. just as we even see now ... "top dogs say not rapture". just as it is coming when Christian are douped by the "trinity". just as the Abomination in the first apostle days... I believe Jesus used Antiochus as a symbol of the AOD. And it happened in two ways according to Luke and Matthew. According to Luke it was the armies surrounding Jerusalem. And Matthew said it would "stand" in the Holy Place. Which I believe was the standing practice of animal sacrifices (think Antiochus' hog sacrifice) after Jesus sacrificed himself for our sins.

Well, you have to understand it was the Jews that had rejected what God had given them and fell into a abomination that caused the desolation. Antiochus, as already made clear, doesn't fit, as Jesus declared it looking forward in time, not backwards.

Now you are correct in comparing Daniels time of the destruction of the first temple. Christ points us to Daniel, and we see in Daniel 11:31: “31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.” Daniel 11:31(KJV)

What this shows as that the issue is tied to the relationship between God and His people and the accompanying worship to God, their rejection first of this, being contrary to the worship God deserves which caused the ruin of that nation. We see what it was in a warning given them previously:

At the time of Daniel they had what Solomon built for God what’s probably been the most magnificent sanctuary on earth. Yet Solomon also added worship places for his wives’ false gods in the start of what the Bible refers to as an “abomination.”

"For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites."1 Kings 11:5.

"Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon." 1 Kings 11:7.

Putting another god in place of the true God is abominable, it is a detestable act which leads to desolation when Gods protecting power is withdrawn. When Daniel wrote about the “abomination of desolation,” the first sanctuary or Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed in the attack of the Babylonians. But Daniel also wrote about the sanctuary being restored which was fulfilled by the rebuilding of the second temple, and they could again come and worship God.

But because of their sin and with the rejection of the Son of God, Christ the Messiah, they again reached a level of "Abomination" that was detestable to God. It led to the destruction of the Second Temple and thus the “Desolation” is the result of what you get without God.

there are three Abomination which Daniel the prophet spoke of, which brought forth Desolation. and Each of these Abomination bring with it Judgment.
The First Abomination: Breaking The Sabbath Brought Desolation
The Second Temple Desolated: The rejection of Messiah the prince.
The Final Desolation: The Great apostasy of God People in the Church, hence the sheep and Goat Judgment.

what makes the Desolation? A lying tongue, The preaching or teaching of another or false gospel. just as we even see now ... "top dogs say not rapture". just as it is coming when Christian are douped by the "trinity". just as the Abomination in the first apostle days... "Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved". Read all of acts chapter 15.

Christ first was talking of the literal siege of Jerusalem which began in 68 A.D. to look for signs signaling Christians to flee the city. This came when the armies of Rome temporarily abandoned that siege and returned in 70 A.D, and the temple was burned and Jerusalem destroyed, but the Christians had fled so none of them perished in the second Roman siege. This was the desolation referred to, and was the "type" or initial fulfillment. The second or "antitype" fulfillment which Christ also speaks to, is the answer to the question asked by the disciples with regard to the second coming. Jesus's prophecy concerning the visitation of judgments upon Jerusalem is to have another fulfillment, of which that desolation of 70 AD was but a shadow. Like the Jews, this foretells the fate of the world that has gone away from and rejected God's mercy and trampled upon His law. So we see it will present itself again at the final period of earth’s history and we need to understand what is the root case of the abomination.

Now you are correct in comparing Daniels time of the destruction of the first temple. Christ points us to Daniel, and we see in Daniel 11:31

The Jewish Rabbis have pushed the view that it was when in 167 B.C. a Greek ruler by the name of Antiochus Epiphanies set up an altar to Zeus over the altar of burnt offerings in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. He also sacrificed a pig on the altar in the Temple in Jerusalem.

But it doesn't fit, as Jesus declared it looking forward in time, not backwards, and the Jewish nation continued along with the sacrifices as we see at the beginning of Matthew 24 as Jesus was telling the disciples what was going to happen:

This is starting from Darius and Cyrus and ends with God’s people delivered. Like the other prophecies in Daniel, it does not focus in on a narrow span of history but covers a long time span from the prophet’s day to the end of the world.

The antichrist power has already come and persecuted and burned at the stake the faithful, but its burned the books showing its deeds and come up with flatteries and lies to cover its tracks. Ummmmmmm, you mis-read what BOTH Scripture and History actually account. You have assumed that Darius and Cyrus were both from the Medo/Persian empire, and thus were both "Persians". But Darius was the LAST Babylonian king, and Cyrus was the FIRST Medo/Persian king. All you have to do is read Daniel 9:1 & 11:1 to arrive at the TRUTH.


But that's ok, the commentator's lies have made it more difficult to arrive to the TRUTH.

Good Job on figuring out that Daniel 11 has NOTHING TO DO with ancient history, -- and unfortunately that should have been obvious when the commentators DEFIED the angel's instructions in 12:5 & 12:9, which insist that the prophecies of this Book are approximate to ~1948.

So the real question isn't "What is the Abomination", but rather "What is the Book"! And to figure that you, you should start at the beginning and arrive at the specifics, not the other way around.


But that takes work, and we're a lazy, stupid church, that would rather be told what to think by ignorant HIRELINGS, -- rather than receive DIRECTLY from GOD. :)

So lets start with what was this desolation that would befall them?

The Abomination of Desolation is directly connected to the Great Tribulation, which is in fact the Day of the LORD, and corresponds to the 7th trumpet judgments (the 7 vials of the wrath of God). Please note:

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand), Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:.. For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be... (Mt 24:15,21)

Before this Christ had already predicted the destruction of the temple at Jerusalem in 70 AD. But we know that the Abomination of Desolation could not have been fulfilled at that time since the Great Tribulation is a totally unique event, never to be repeated, and followed immediately by the shaking of the heavens and the earth: Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: (Mt 24:29)

Since it is obvious that all the heavenly bodies are still in their courses, this is yet a future event, connected with the reign of the Antichrist. So the Abomination of Desolation is none other than "the image of the Beast".

11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

"The image of [to] the beast" is repeated four times in two verses. We know from the OT, that every idol was an abomination to God, but this idol is an EXTREME abomination to God, and triggers the desolations of the Great Tribulation.

Is expected in about two years:

Dan. 9:27 ... and upon the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”​

And to appreciate the significance of the second, it might help to understand the circumstances of the first. -- Yeah, like anybody wants to have to think.

You are so far off base, that there is no hope of having you see the truth. If indeed the prophecy of the Abomination of Desolation was ever fulfilled, the literal Second Coming of Christ to earth would have already been fulfilled! You're right. There was NO abomination of desolation inside the church of the 1944 Oradour-sur-Glane. It apparently wasn't specifically cited in Scripture, so apparently it didn't happen:
