Just started listening to this book. The author is friend and brilliant biologist who specializes in marine biology.

His other book, Southern Womder focuses on Alabama’s natural history and wildlife .

I’m starting a bittersweet reading project, prompted by a discovery in my personal library and a quote by C.S. Lewis.

A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” - C.S. Lewis

I was searching for a book in my private library recently when, quite by accident, I came across a forgotten book; a book that I had intended to read with my child thirty years ago but never got around to doing. I plucked it from the shelf, quickly thumbed through it, and then gently placed it back on the shelf. I sat down in a chair and stared at the book for some time. For how long, I don’t know. My mind was far off, thinking about a little girl who was excited about reading a book with her father. A book that never got read by either of them.

The girl, who was ten years old at the time, is a grown woman now and has a child of her own. A boy; who turned six years old last month.

What the father failed to do the grandfather has an opportunity to redress; not with his daughter, alas, but with his grandson.

I’ll continue reading the books I had planned to read concurrently as this bittersweet project unfolds; my time with my grandson, though ample, not being quite what it was with my little girl so many years ago.

I’m beginning now, in the next few minutes, to read The Moral Compass: Stories For A Life’s Journey, written by William J. Bennett.

I won’t be able to read every story in the book with my grandson. I’ll read them all and select those which are appropriate for his age and current interests. I’ll read them with him when he visits me or I visit him. When he’s older, I’ll give him the book.

It’s probably still right. How many books does the average American read a year? Well it’s the same as how many miles the average American runs a year. Zero lol.

I’m in the 99.99% probably. I read and listened to 140 books last year, not to mention hundreds of pages of scientific peer reviewed articles and spent hundreds of hours studying field guides and keys to wildlife.

* One of the first things I do when helping children who are struggling to learn how to read well in school is have their parents obtain a public library card for their child. *

The witness of the stars

by Bullinger, E. W. (Ethelbert William), 1837-1913

Anyone else read this one ?
I’ve not read it. I’ve not actually heard of him. But the book seems interesting. I’ll have to read it and see if the summaries did it justice. Seems sort of like he is applying Christian stories to the constellations. Almost like combining theology with celestial folklore. If so, I’ll definitely enjoy it as a syncretist. I am curious how well versed he was with ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Greek mythology christianizes it as he reimagines the power of storytelling. I’ll especially enjoy it this winter. I like to stargaze in winter since no bugs to bother me at night, feels nice and cool and gets dark early on. Was looking at Orion yesterday.

Yes , I also like to peer into the night sky . I do some praying outside in the dark under the stars and the moon . Found a verse .

Amos 5:8

Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name

My neighbour tells me he's read the bible 5 times. I ask him, 'do you understand what it's saying' He tells me no, yet still argues from it. I wonder how that works?

Well in his defense neither does the overwhelming majority of Christians. About the only ones that really do still on have super good grasps on selections of the Bible and they are from biblical scholarship. The ones that can read the original language and translate it. Then we read their translations and are heavily influenced by their required interpretations for the bulk of it.
