That word "Prince" above is Hebrew nagid, and can be translated as a ruler or leader or commander. But with the word "Messiah" as part of that declaration, it can only point to Jesus Christ, The Messiah.

Thus we are not... to confuse that word nagid (ruler) which is used later in the next Dan.9:26 verse as "prince" which is about the Roman ruler general Titus whose army destroyed Jerusalem and the temple in 70 A.D.

The Romans did destroy the temple and city in 70 AD fulfilling that part of the verse.

But Titus is not the prince that shall come. The prince that shall come is an end times person who will confirm the covenant for 7 years. Otherwise, there is no person in Daniel 9:27 to confirm the covenant for 7 years.

Here's how to understand those verses.

It not just "the prince", but "the prince that shall come". When used in that context and wording, the implication identifies of what group of people the prince that shall come will be of.

His people had to go ahead and destroy the city and the sanctuary without him because he has decided to take his sweet time to show up.
