Most evangelicals view forgiveness solely as a direct transaction between the confessing believer and God with no human mediation. So they freeze like Bambi in the headlights when confronted by Jesus' teaching that church leaders must play an active role in mediating divine forgiveness:
There is one mediator between God and mam, the man, Christ Jesus.
We don’t have, or need, Mary, or some priest as our medator.
No scripture says that whatever sins you forgive anyone for, on the behalf of God, are forgiven by God.
Scripture says God is not mocked, for you reap what you sow - if you sow a sinful Life you reap destruction.
Having a priest claiming to forgive unrepentant sinners on behalf of God, is mocking Him.
Unless repentance is real, God won’t forgive our sins when we ask Him for forgiveness.
In the Roman Catholic error, a man who is not sincere about his repentance, who in fact is going to keep on committing a sin, such as adultery with his mistress, is told by a priest his sins are forgiven, when thy absolutely are not.
Only God knows if repentance is real and is sincere.
Lots of Catholics will split hell wide open when they die, because they thought confession to a priest was their loophole that let them sin all they want Monday through Saturday, and have it forgiven in the confessional on Sunday - because they were lied to.
That’s one reason why so many in the mob are Catholic- kill a man on Friday and it’s forgiven on Sunday, without true repentance. Then repeat as they kill again.
Or so they think.
