The various ways the titles Jew, Israelite, and Hebrew is thrown around today comes from not studying Old Testament history. God's Word is very specific about those titles, so knowing their difference and who they apply to is very important, that is if you want to better grasp who God gave His promises and prophecies to.

Here is what the Jewish historian Josephus (100 A.D.) said about the origin of the title Jew:

"You know, O Jews, that God hath kept our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in mind continually; and for the sake of their righteousness hath not left off the care of you. Indeed, he hath assisted me in gaining this authority of the king to raise up our wall, and finish what is wanting of the temple. (170) I desire you, therefore, who well know the will our neighboring nations bear to us, and that when once they are made sensible that we are in earnest about building, they will come upon us and contrive many ways of obstructing our works, (171) that you will, in the first place, put your trust in God, as in him that will assist us against their hatred, and to intermit building neither night nor day, but to use all diligence, and to hasten on the work, now we have this especial opportunity for it." (172) When he had said this, he gave order that the rulers should measure the wall, and part the work of it among the people, according to their villages and cities, as everyone's ability should require. And when he had added this promise, that he himself, with his servants, would assist them, he dissolved the assembly. (173) So the Jews prepared for the work: that is the name they are called by from the day that they came up from Babylon, which is taken from the tribe of Judah, which came first to these places, and thence both they and the country gained that appellation."
The Antiquities of The Jews, The Works of Josephus translated by William Whiston (1667-1752), (Hendrickson Publishers, Peabody, MA,1987), Book 11/ Chapter 5, p.297.

That was about a time after the 70 years Babylon captivity of the house of Judah, with a small remnant of that house returning to Jerusalem to rebuild the 2nd temple and Jerusalem. They had been in captivity to Babylon when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had conquered and destroyed Jerusalem. That was the days of the prophets Daniel and Ezekiel who were in that Babylon captivity, and Jeremiah who had been taken into Egypt instead. That returning remnant is detailed in the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah, post-Babylon captivity Books. The great majority of the house of Judah stayed in Babylon by choice. God has blessed them while captive as He had promised. Then later, that great majority of the house of Judah in Babylon were further scattered through the countries, and have taken that title of Jew from the tribe of Judah.

That title of Jew became a name for only ONE branch of Israelites, specifically named the "house of Judah" in God's Word. Understanding this distinction may not seem important, but it is very important, otherwise you won't understand which prophecies in God's Word are to whom, but will wrongly think all prophecy about Israel is to ALL Israel, when it is not.

I King 11:26-37
26 And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king.
27 And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.
28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.

Jeroboam was of the tribe of Ephraim, the younger son of Joseph (Gen.48). That's how Solomon would put Jeroboam as head over the "house of Joseph". That's a pointer to the northern peoples of Israel, north of Judea-Jerusalem where Solomon of the house of David dwelt as king. God began a division in Israel with this Jeroboam because of how Solomon had taken many wives of the nations and allowed them to bring in their various pagan idols of worship into Israel. Thus God split Israel in two because of Solomon falling away.

29 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:

God's prophet Ahijah grabbed Jeroboam's new coat and tore it into ten pieces. You think that got Jeroboam's attention?

31 And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:

Ahijah then repeats what God told him to tell Jeroboam, that He will rend (break) the kingdom of Israel out of Solomon's hand, and given Jeroboam ten tribes. This was a brand new event in Israel's history.

32 (But he shall have one tribe for My servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)

But concerning Jerusalem, God said He would still give Solomon one tribe, for David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city where God has chosen. That one tribe was Judah, which the kings of the house of David were to come from.

33 Because that they have forsaken Me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in My ways, to do that which is right in Mine eyes, and to keep My statutes and My judgments, as did David his father.

And here's the cause that made God do this division of Israel's tribes. Because of Solomon allowing the pagan idolatry of the nations to creep into Israel, when it was his job to be defender of Israel's Faith, as his father David did. This is still the job of Christian monarchs to be defenders of The Faith under Christ Jesus.

34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David My servant's sake, whom I chose, because he kept My commandments and My statutes:
35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.

Because of David's obedience, God promised He would not rend the whole kingdom of Israel out of Solomon's hand, but that Solomon's son Rehoboam would remain with one tribe (see next verse), but Jeroboam of the house of Joseph surely would receive ten tribes out of Israel and reign over them separately.

36 And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David My servant may have a light alway before Me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen Me to put my name there.

God repeats that Solomon's son (Rehoboam) would keep one tribe, for David's and Jerusalem's sake. This is why God has always preserved at least a small remnant of Judah (Jews) in Jerusalem throughout all generations, even today. Some were even left in Judea during Nebuchadnezzar's destruction of Jerusalem and captivity of the majority of Judah to Babylon. And still through all generations thereafter, remnants of Judah have always been in Jerusalem to show God keeping this promise.

37 And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel.
(KJV)

With this last verse, God is speaking to Jeroboam of the house of Joseph still. Jeroboam (of Joseph) was given ten tribes of Israel, and was given to be king over Israel. Note God said, "king over Israel." How can one tribe still be at Jerusalem with Solomon and his son, while Jeroboam is to be "king over Israel" with ten tribes? That's to show how God here CHANGES who His title of the nation of Israel applied to at this point in history. Israel is God's Birthright blessing name linked to His Promise of Salvation first given through Abraham in Gen.14. It is the name God agreed to call the House of God giving it to Jacob in association with the pillar stone Beth-El (house of God).

God's covenant promise to Abraham continued through Isaac, then to Jacob, then to Joseph, and now with this split of the kingdom of Israel with Jeroboam over the house of Joseph, what Biblical promise is that pointing to? Jeroboam was an Ephrathite of the tribe of Ephraim. Remember the prophecy Jacob gave in Gen.48 that Ephraim the younger son of Joseph was to become "a multitude of nations"? This was the start of that prophecy with God breaking the kingdom of Israel into different branches in Solomon's days.

God continues His promise to give Jeroboam (of Ephraim) ten tribes to rule over...

IKing 11:38-39
38 And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in My ways, and do that is right in My sight, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as David My servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.
39 And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.
(KJV)

God then told Jeroboam (of Ephraim) that if he would follow God's ways as His servant David did, then He would make the kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam a sure house like He did for David. But, He shows He will not afflict Judah (seed of David) forever in this. At this time today, this split is still in effect, the two houses still not yet put back together which will only happen at Christ's future return.

I King 11:43
43 And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
(KJV)

Solomon died, then his son Rehoboam became king of Judah over... whom? Easy to get the names Rehoboam (of Solomon) and Jeroboam (of Ephraim) confused isn't it? That only shows how focused we must stay in God's Word as written to get His Truth. Now, to find out if God made this happen or not...

I King 12:1-15
1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

All Israel came to Shechem to make Rehoboam (Solomon's son) king over all Israel. The children of Israel let Jeroboam (of Ephraim) know about this, who had fled from Solomon to Egypt because of God's prophecy to him becoming king instead. Then Jeroboam and the other representatives of the people go to Solomon's son Rehoboam, and ask him to lighten the burden of work his father Solomon had made upon them. Rehoboam said he'd give answer to them in 3 days.

6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Rehoboam (Solmon's son) asks counsel from the wise elder men, but heeds the unwise counsel of the younger ones he grew up with. Then the people of Israel with Jeroboam return for his answer.

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;
14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that He might perform His saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
(KJV)

Rehoboam said he'd chastise the people with scorpions instead of whips his father Solomon used. This was to ensure a riff so as to bring what God had promised through His prophet Ahijah to pass.

IKing 12:16-24
16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

When the children of Israel saw Solomon's son would not heed their petition, they departed from Jerusalem and Rehoboam's reign. This is showing clear dividing lines of who the name Israel would apply to at this point, i.e., to the Israelites in the north under Jeroboam (of Ephraim). But the children of Israel that lived in the cities of Judah (Judea in the southern lands), they chose to remain under Rehoboam king of Judah. This is why those like Anna in Luke 2:36 of the tribe of Asher can be found still among the Jews of Judah at Christ's first coming. Clearly these were not that many which remained with Rehoboam of Judah.

18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

King Rehoboam of Judah (of Solomon, of the house of David) sent the tax collectors to the northern tribes of Israel and they stoned him, which made Rehoboam flee back to Jerusalem for safety. Israel here is being put ONLY for the northern tribes outside Judea-Jerusalem, showing a definite split among the tribes and who was then meant as 'Israel'.

20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

Then the people of Israel in the northern lands made Jeroboam (of Ephraim) king over Israel, meaning the northern tribes of Israel in the north. None followed Rehoboam of the house of David at Jerusalem-Judea except the tribe of Judah. THERE'S THE FIRST REAL MARKER FOR THE PROBABLE BEGINNING USAGE OF THE TITLE OF JEW. It made a distinction between the northern kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam (of Ephraim) vs. the southern kingdom of Judah under king Rehoboam of Solomon.

21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from Me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
(KJV)

Then king Rehoboam of Judah joins the tribe of Benjamin with Judah at Jerusalem-Judea for to go war against the "house of Israel" to bring the whole kingdom again. Here are the first important kingdom distinctions of "the house of Israel" and "the house of Judah", very specific identifiers for the two separate kingdoms God had caused per His promise to Jeroboam for what Solomon had done in falling away.

Now Jeroboam (of Ephraim) is king over ten tribes in the northern lands of Israel, and is called king of Israel, his kingdom named the house of Israel. But Rehoboam (of Solomon) is king of Judah over the tribes of Judah and Benjamin at Jerusalem now called the house of Judah. Those are very clear, and very strong distinctions being made in God's Word there.

Why is that so important to grasp? It's because God gave very different Bible prophecies for each separate 'house' after this split. It's wrong to assign a prophecy after this point given specifically to the "house of Israel" to the Jews of the "house of Judah", and visa versa. And God does give some very specific prophecies to each after this point.

IKing 12:25-33
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

King Jeroboam (of Ephraim), king of Israel now, contrived a plot to try and strengthen his power over the ten tribes he was given to reign over. The people of Israel were still under God's Old Covenant in those days, and were required to go down to Jerusalem and worship. He reasoned their doing that would cause a loss in numbers siding with Rehoboam king of Judah with the tribes of Judah and Benjamin at Judea. So he setup two golden calves in idol worship for the ten tribes to worship, one at Bethel which means 'house of God, and the other in Dan, both in lands among the northern ten tribes.

So even Jeroboam (of Ephraim) departed from God's promise to him, and went into the same sins Solomon did which caused God to split of Israel.

31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

Jeroboam (of Ephraim) also made pagan high places of false worship, and common priests of the people, which was against God's commandment then that only of the sons of Levi and Aaron were to be priests in Israel. This caused the sons of Levi to leave their dwellings among the ten northern tribes and take up with Rehoboam and Judah and Benjamin in the southern kingdom of Judah (see 2 Chronicles 11:14). Because of this act, the "house of Judah" at Jerusalem-Judea under Rehoboam king of Judah now included the three tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi, and of course some small remnants of the other tribes that lived in Judea before and remained.

32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
(KJV)

This is where the false worship of Baalism began among the ten tribes of Israel under Jeroboam of Ephraim. All the later kings of Israel (only the ten tribes after this split) allowed the gold calf worship to continue in Israel until God finally had enough, and brought the kings of Assyria upon the northern kingdom (ten tribes), and took them ALL out of the land (2 Kings 17). There was only the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi that remained in Jerusalem-Judea. The ten tribes of the northern kingdom was ended, and all the ten tribes became lost to Judah and to the world.

But God never lost the ten tribes of the house of Israel. He knows exactly where He scattered them, and who they are even today, even as He said in Amos 9:9 that He will eventually sift the children of the house of Israel like corn through a sieve, and not the least grain will fall to the ground. That sifting is to occur ONLY at Christ's future second coming, which is when the gathering of the people of Israel with believing Gentiles on Christ will be. It's when both the house of Judah, and the house of Israel will be joined to form one nation of Israel again, and that's a literal joining by Christ Jesus when He comes (Ezekiel 37; Jer.3; Jer.31; Jer.33; Zech.8).

If you continue that study of the split of Israel into two separate houses, the riddle of the two sister harlots in Ezekiel 23 will be easily understood, as also the prophecies about the ten tribes in the Book of Hosea and elsewhere. You may even begin to under the riddle God gave only to the house of Israel (ten tribes) through His prophet Ezekiel in Ezek.17 & 21. Then... you might start to be able to measure the pattern of God's House He told Ezekiel to show them per Ezekiel 40 through 48. There are many important Bible prophecies that hinge on first understanding that history of 1 Kings 11 through 2 Kings 17 about the house of Judah being separate from the house of Israel.

In the Hosea prophecies, God foretold how the house of Israel (ten tribes only under Ephraim) would be scattered and lost, while the house of Judah was still faithful at that time. The house of Judah (Jews of tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi) only was left in the holy land in the days of Jeremiah the prophet.

Yet the house of Judah also began to rebel against God later, and God brought the Babylonian captivity upon them. That particular captivity involved only the Jews of the house of Judah. After their captivity, a small remnant of that house returned to Jerusalem, while the rest of them were scattered through the nations like the ten tribed house of Israel was before.

As was the king of Assyria's fashion in conquering peoples, when he took all the house of Israel (ten tribes) captive to Assyria and the land of the Medes, he moved foreign peoples from Babylon and put them in the northern holy lands instead. Those were the Samaritans of the New Testament times. The Jews of the house of Judah wouldn't have much to do with them, further showing how God had left only a small remnant of Israelites at Judea-Jerusalem by the time of Christ's first coming.

Thus Apostle Paul was an Israelite of the tribe of Benjmain, and a Jew, and a Roman, and a Cilician of Tarsus, all at the same time. He was born in Tarsus, Cilicia, was also a Roman citzen (by his parents living there most likely), he was a Jew of the "house of Judah" being from the tribe of Benjamin, and he was an Israelite with Jacob as his ancestor.

The one heritage Apostle Paul did not have, he was not of the "house of Israel" of the ten tribed Israelites that were scattered first. The Jews never lost their heritage as part of Israel. And that's who has formed the nation state in the holy land today called Israel. A small number of Jews may have originally come from some of the ten tribes per 1 Kings 12, but that heritage was no doubt mostly lost a long time ago when they became joined with the house of Judah at Judea.

As can be seen with the numbers of all the children of Israel before the kingdom split in Solomon's days, the ten tribes in the north made up the majority of Israelites. So just because God scattered the ten tribes and they became lost to themselves and lost to the Jews, the ten tribes most likely still way outnumber the Jews today also. It's just that most don't know what happenned to them. But at Christ's coming all will then know, and many are going to be surprised at how many they are.
