When my wife asks be this question, or something similar, it's because she actually wants to know. Will a liar do her any good? I think not!
The lie someone tells is to make themself feel better.

A quick search on the term "false testimony" gives us this.
- Exodus 20:16
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
- Deuteronomy 5:20
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

She had flax drying on the roof. As I understand it, that was "poor man's work", that is, anyone can go and gather reeds to dry, and either sell, or make things and sell. It's entirely possible she had given up prostitution in view of the immenent invasion by the people of YHWH.

"Lying" in the biblical context, has a few parts.
"dealing falsely", is one.
"bearing false witness" is one.
also, Cheating someone. And that is Lying, according to the Bible.
The Bible refers to a "false balance", and that includes taking a Bribe.......and that is also a Biblical Definition of Lying.
Now, there is one specific type of Lying that will get you hurt.
You'll get what the NT refers to as a "reproof", and that is not talking about Hebrews 12:6
If you cheat in business, against another Christian...>if you cheat them out of money or in any way, then the Lord will rebuke you for it.
And example of this, is :Ananias and Sapphira
These 2 tried to cheat a local church and they were KILLED by the Spirit of God, in the Church building and were carried out Dead.
Moral of their Story?
Dont Cheat. Be Honest. Do Right. Play Fair... Dont try to find a way to manipulate people out of anything.
My intention is not to promote dishonesty, except on the part of
the church that misinformed us about the Ten Commandments.

It’s never good to practice lying.
Especially to your neighbor. It can greatly effect not only their mood but their look at you as a person.
If you do someone dirty saying your a Christian, perhaps that wasn’t Christ in you that said that and was you by your flesh.

For discussion's sake, I'm going to say "Yes, lying violates the 9th commandment" because what I learned from Jesus in the Sermon on the mount (using the examples of the commandments prohibiting murder and adultery) is that the heart of the commandments is broader than the literal statement of the commandments.
Is that fair statement? @MatthewG, does that clarify what I was trying to say in #36?
(That's what I get for listening to Jesus.)

isn't clear from the Ten Commandments. (my point)
