I share what the Bible says.

1 Cor. 6:9 Or do you not know that unrighteous people will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Do not be misled. Those who are sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who submit to homosexual acts, men who practice homosexuality, 10 thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, and extortioners will not inherit God’s Kingdom. 11 And yet that is what some of you were. But you have been washed clean; you have been sanctified; you have been declared righteous in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God.
Yes, certainly, BUT...
Is lying a violation of the Ten Commandments? (assuming...)

That is the topic question.

Telling the truth would've gotten the spies killed. Probably her and her family too in the ensuing invasion. As it was, she betrayed her countrymen, but saved herself and her family. Helluva choice. She trusted the Israelites and their God and did what she had to do. That's why she's considered a paragon of faith, if not righteousness. But is not faith accounted to us as righteousness?
Let's not forget that she ended up in the lineage of Christ.

(And why is it that the first thing the spies did when they got to Jericho was seek out a hooker?)
They had heard that the land was flowing with milk and honeys. Oh wait... milk and honey. (singular)

"Do these pants make my butt look big?"

If you're answering 'yes' OR 'no,' you're probably in trouble.
When my wife asks be this question, or something similar, it's because she actually wants to know. Will a liar do her any good? I think not!

The lie someone tells is to make themself feel better.

Much love!

Can you really limit the scope of the commandment to a courtroom setting? Or by extension, does it cover, for example, internet gossip. "I witnessed my neighbor having sex on the chaise lounge in the back yard with his neighbor's wife." Enquiring minds want to know!
A quick search on the term "false testimony" gives us this.

  • Exodus 20:16
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

  • Deuteronomy 5:20
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

  • Deuteronomy 19:18
The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar,
giving false testimony against a fellow Israelite,

  • Proverbs 25:18
Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is one who gives false testimony against a neighbor.

  • Isaiah 29:21
those who with a word make someone out to be guilty, who ensnare the defender in court
and with false testimony deprive the innocent of justice.

  • Matthew 15:19
For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

  • Matthew 19:18
“Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery,
you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,

  • Mark 10:19
You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery,
you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”

  • Mark 14:57
Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:

  • Luke 18:20
You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery,
you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”

She had flax drying on the roof. As I understand it, that was "poor man's work", that is, anyone can go and gather reeds to dry, and either sell, or make things and sell. It's entirely possible she had given up prostitution in view of the immenent invasion by the people of YHWH.

Much love!

The 9th Commandments reads:
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. - EXODUS 20:16 NIV

Giving false testimony is perjury specifically, not lying in general. ???

perjury /pûr′jə-rē/

noun

  1. The crime of willfully and knowingly making a false statement about a material fact while under oath.
  2. An act of committing such a crime.
    "testimony full of perjuries."
  3. False swearing.

So... Is Lying a Violation of the Ten Commandments? - No. - Well, maybe... ???

What if the perjury is not against your neighbor?

Furthermore, we are not under the law that God gave to the Israelites alone through Moses.

So, where does that leave us?

"Lying" in the biblical context, has a few parts.

"dealing falsely", is one.

"bearing false witness" is one.

also, Cheating someone. And that is Lying, according to the Bible.

The Bible refers to a "false balance", and that includes taking a Bribe.......and that is also a Biblical Definition of Lying.

Now, there is one specific type of Lying that will get you hurt.
You'll get what the NT refers to as a "reproof", and that is not talking about Hebrews 12:6

If you cheat in business, against another Christian...>if you cheat them out of money or in any way, then the Lord will rebuke you for it.

And example of this, is :Ananias and Sapphira

These 2 tried to cheat a local church and they were KILLED by the Spirit of God, in the Church building and were carried out Dead.

Moral of their Story?
Dont Cheat. Be Honest. Do Right. Play Fair... Dont try to find a way to manipulate people out of anything.

I think you're asking the wrong questions, here.
My intention is not to promote dishonesty, except on the part of
the church that misinformed us about the Ten Commandments.

Actually, I'm just getting started. (can you see where this is going?)

Would you consider the Shema to be part of the commandments? I believe it serves as a sort of introduction or summary to them.

Consider the Shema that commands us to love the Lord our God with all our heart. Then consider if a lie is loving or not.
Interesting how nearly everyone is hedging on this. Most are running scared. Why?
Your answer shows that you agree with me but will not say it plainly.

It’s never good to practice lying.

Especially to your neighbor. It can greatly effect not only their mood but their look at you as a person.

If you do someone dirty saying your a Christian, perhaps that wasn’t Christ in you that said that and was you by your flesh.

"You have heard it said, 'You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor'. But I say unto you....." (See post #36)

Perhaps the church has historically applied the same principle from the Sermon on the Mount to the 9th commandment?

Jesus tended to broaden the application of the commandments, the most famous being the "lust = adultery in the heart". (Did anybody pick up on calling somebody a fool being equivalent to Murder-1 in the immediately preceding verses of that famous sermon? I think I'm in trouble on that one.) That's why I'm just sayin' that Jesus might not limit the "false witness" commandment to a courtroom setting.
I still don’t know what 36 means.

Perhaps. But that's because it isn't what it says.

If your an Israelite and you don’t get on to your spoiled child who disrespects you, doesn’t end up being stoned to death is a violation of the law for them.

For discussion's sake, I'm going to say "Yes, lying violates the 9th commandment" because what I learned from Jesus in the Sermon on the mount (using the examples of the commandments prohibiting murder and adultery) is that the heart of the commandments is broader than the literal statement of the commandments.

Is that fair statement? @MatthewG, does that clarify what I was trying to say in #36?

(That's what I get for listening to Jesus.)

That's good.
I wanted to see some lively discussion.
Your position actually helps to prove my point.
If you have to look to the Beatitudes to prove your point, then it
isn't clear from the Ten Commandments. (my point)

Most are beating around the bush to make their point.
The direct approach doesn't work, because it just isn't in the text in question.

I think we need to re-read the OP.

Ephesians 4:25 KJV
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

It leaves us right here, knowing God's will for us.

Much love!
