The Judaean Christians did not interpret Luke's account the way you do. They heeded its warnings, recognized the abomination of desolation, and survived as a result.

Who was right?

1. You
2. Judaean Christians
Actually all they had to do was see the armies. Why add the Desolation of Abomination? The AoD was not when they fled, in 66AD. Nor in 70AD, 3.5 years after they fled. Even the early church fathers knew they fled in 66AD. No one fled in 70AD. In fact, the Romans allowed thousands to enter for Passover, and then let no one leave for 5 months.

WARS AND RUMORS OF WARS

Matthew: “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that ye be not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom” (24:6, 7).
Mark: “And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled; for such things must needs be, but the end is not yet, For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (13:7, 8).
Luke: “But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified; for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by [immediately]. Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (21:9, 10).

We are told that when Jesus gave this prophecy, the Roman Empire was experiencing a general peace within its borders. But Jesus explained to his disciples that they would be hearing of wars, rumors of wars, and commotions. And did they? Yes, within a short time the Empire was filled with strife, insurrection, and wars.

Before the fall of Jerusalem, four Emperors came to violent deaths within the space of 18 months. According to the historian Suetonius (who lived during the latter part of the first century and the beginning of the second), Nero “drove a dagger into his throat.” Galba was run down by horsemen. A soldier cut off his head and “thrusting his thumb into the mouth”, carried the horrid trophy about. Otho “stabbed himself” in the breast. Vitellius was killed by slow torture and then “dragged by a hook into the Tiber.” We can understand that such fate falling on the Emperors would naturally spread distress and insecurity through the Empire.

In the Annals of Tacitus, a Roman who wrote a history which covers the period prior to 70 A. D., we find such expressions as these “Disturbances in Germany”, “commotions in Africa”, “commotions in Thrace”, “insurrections in Gaul”, “intrigues among the Parthians”, “the war in Britain”, “war in Armenia.”

Among the Jews, the times became turbulent. In Seleucia, 50,000 Jews were killed. There was an uprising against them in Alexandria. In a battle between the Jews and Syrians in Caesarea, 20,000 were killed. During these times, Caligula ordered his statue placed in the temple at Jerusalem. The Jews refused to do this and lived in constant fear that the Emperor’s armies would be sent into Palestine. This fear became so real that some of them did not even bother to till their fields.

But though there would be wars, rumours of wars, and commotions, Jesus told his disciples: “See that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the END is not yet.” The word “end” that is used here is not the same Greek word as in the expression “end of the world.” (See footnote on page 59). As Barnes says, the end here referred to is “the end of the Jewish economy; the destruction of Jerusalem.”

Wars, rumors of wars, and commotions were of a general nature. These things were not signs of the end; to the contrary, they were given to show that the end was NOT yet. None of these things would be the sign which would cause the disciples to flee into the mountains.

FAMINES, PESTILENCES, EARTHQUAKES

Matthew: “And there shall be famines and pestilences, and earthquakes in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows” (24:7, 8).
Mark: “And there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles. These are the beginning of sorrows” (13:8).
Luke: “And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines and pestilences, and fearful sights” (21:11).

The Bible records that there was famine “throughout all the world. . . in the days of Claudius Caesar” (Acts 11:28). Judea was especially hard hit by famine. “The disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethern which dwelt in Judaea” (verse 29). Paul’s instructions concerning this “collection [of fruit] for the saints” is recorded in First Corinthians 16:1-5; Rom. 15:25-28.

Historians such as Suetonius and others mention famine during those years. Tacitus speaks of a “Failure in the crops, and a famine consequent thereupon.” Eusebius also mentions famines during this time in Home, Judea, and Greece. Yes, there were famines in those years before the fall of Jerusalem.

Along with famines, Jesus mentioned pestilences; that is plagues, the spread of disease, epidemics. Famine and pestilence, of course, go hand in hand. When people do not have proper food or insufficient food, pestilence results. Suetonius wrote of “pestilence” at Home in the days of Nero which was so severe that “within the space of one autumn there died no less than 30,000 persons.” Josephus records that pestilences raged in Babylonia in A.D. 40. Tacitus tells of pestilences in Italy in A. D. 66. Yes, there were pestilences in those years before the destruction of Jerusalem.

During this period, Jesus said there would also be earthquakes in many places. Tacitus mentions earthquakes at Rome. He wrote that “frequent earthquakes occured, by which many houses were thrown down” and that “twelve populous cities of Asia fell in ruins from an earthquake.”

Seneca, writing in the year 58 A. D., said: “How often have cities of Asia and Achaea fallen with one fatal shock! how many cities have been swallowed up in Syria! how many in Macedonia! how often has Cyprus been wasted by this calamity! how often has Paphos become a ruin! News has often been brought us of the demolition of whole cities at once.” He mentions the earthquake at Campania during the reign of Nero. In 60 A. D., Hierapous, Colosse, and Laodicea were overthrown — Laodocia being so self-sufficient that it recovered without the Imperial aid furnished other cities. In 63 A. D., the city of Pompeii was greatly damaged by earthquake. There were earthquakes in Crete, Apamea, Smyrna, Miletus, Chios, Samos, and Judea. Earthquakes in divers places.

The end has not happened yet. We are not done with all those promises in Matthew 24:4-14.

I know that they weren't crucified.
People were already dead when Jerusalem was finally taken and leveled. What does a crucifixion have to do with anything? 70AD was not just about the Romans. It was a civil war. The Jews were killing each other.

That's a new one.

Explain it, with Scripture.
"When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, whoso readeth, let him understand."

You have never read Matthew 24:15?

The end of OT national Israel happened in 70 AD.

What's this "we" hallucination?
That was not the end given in Matthew 24.

You really don't know your Scripture?

"And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."

Matthew 24 was about the disciples and the church until the Second Coming.

You keep forcing the chapter back into Luke 21 and 70AD.

The Gospel is not the "OT national Israel".

The OT Covenant stopped at the Cross, 40 years before Jerusalem was destroyed. Matthew 24:4-14 was about the disciples and the Gospel spreading throughout the world until the Second Coming. They would have great tribulation, and it is still going almost 2,000 years later. That was not Jacob's trouble, which has not happened yet, not even in 70AD.

The things mentioned in Matthew take place at the end of the time of the Gentiles. Luke covers events surrounding Jerusalem during the time of the Gentiles.

I asked you first.
Why would I legitimize your point? Why do you think any were even crucified in 70AD? Why would the Romans even bother?

The Cross and crucifixion were punishment for crimes against Rome. 70AD was the end of Rome decimating the entire area of Palestine, not setting up a province, that was already set up. They had already leveled several fortified cities. Jerusalem was the last city with walls.

Titus was even letting Jews from all over the empire and other nations freely enter Jerusalem for Passover. It was not a crime to enter Jerusalem.

During the siege they may have found some people outside and placed them on a stake to lower the moral inside. But they were not inside putting people on stakes as part of the seige to defeat those inside.

The Jews themselves were still fighting and drawing out their civil war while Jerusalem was under seige.

Jesus was crucified. So not seeing your point that Jesus included crucifixion as making the destruction of Jerusalem any more severe.

Not all of Matthew 24 is about that, though. Tell me why only Luke would have recorded Jesus's answer to the disciples' question about the timing of the destruction of the temple buildings standing at that time. Why would Matthew and Mark not have also recorded His answer to that question?

It seems as if there is confusion about the terms used in the end times prophesies….

So just to define a few points here…

“The Gentile Times” or “the appointed times of the nations” specifically means the time period in which Gentile nations ruled over the Jewish people in their own land. After Babylon was used by God to punish the Israelites for their continued disobedience, no Jewish has king sat on the throne of David in Jerusalem, as it was prophesied in Ezekiel 21:26-27…

Of the last Davidic King to reign in Jerusalem it was written…..
“This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: ‘Remove the turban, and take off the crown. This will not remain the same. Raise up the low one, and bring low the high one. 27 A ruin, a ruin, a ruin I will make it. And it will not belong to anyone until the one who has the legal right comes, and I will give it to him.’”

The one with the legal right (Shiloh) was Jesus Christ….so earthly Jerusalem was not to be the center of God’s worship, because the majority of Jews after their release from Babylon failed to return “home”. This is called the “diaspora”….a spreading out or dispersing of the Jewish people into other lands.
Those who remained in Jerusalem were not faithful to their God even though the Temple remained, as Jesus plainly told them in the 23rd chapter of Matthew. God allowed that Temple to be destroyed because of their continued failure to render pure worship to their God, and their premeditated murder of his son….

So the “Gentile Times“ is a period that began when Gentile nations “trampled“ on Jerusalem and subjugated the Jewish people under their own regimes….not in 70 CE….. it began centuries earlier with the Babylonian overthrow of that dynasty in 607 B.C.E. when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem and took captive the dethroned king Zedekiah and the land and it’s Temple was left desolate. That is when the prophesy of the future King (“Shiloh”) was given.

With Jerusalem’s fall in 607 B.C.E. Gentile powers exercised domination over the entire earth. The Davidic dynasty and rule suffered interruption, and so Jerusalem, or what it stood for, would continue to be “trampled on”…until that period expired…..which prophesy indicates was to continue down to our day in what Daniel called “the time of the end”.…in the days of the present world rulers. (Daniel 2:44)

Gentile nations would continue to dominate the geographical location of earthly Jerusalem but Jesus‘ apostles spoke of “heavenly Jerusalem“ with a spiritual Temple…the one where Jesus presented the value of his ransom sacrifice before God in heaven. He assumed the role of High Priest for us.

Heb 9:24…
”For Christ did not enter into a holy place made with hands, which is a copy of the reality, but into heaven itself, so that he now appears before God on our behalf.”

Now the prophesies relating to the end times become clearer. What Jesus uttered was a dual prophesy, relating to his disciples in Jerusalem and surrounding areas after his death and resurrection that applied also in this 21st century when Jesus was to return, and we are about to see again the desolating, not of one geographical location…but of this entire world system, ruled by satan. We are about to witness the end of all the things on this earth that are contrary to God’s will and purpose for mankind on this planet. Satan’s dominion is about to be rescinded in spectacular fashion.

But many seem to be missing some very important information…which I will address in the next post for those who might be interested….what did Jesus say in Matthew 24 that is crucial to our understanding of these distressing times?

Matthew 24:3 begins Jesus prophesy of the time of his return…..but how?

“As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age? (NASB)

This is an incorrect rendering as Jesus was not speaking of his “coming” but of his “presence” (parousia).
If you are at a gathering and someone notices your presence, does it mean that they saw you arrive?

What is the significance of this translation error? It makes Jesus “coming” into what happens later….not what happens first, making two events into one. Christ’s “presence” takes place before he “comes” as judge of all the earth.

Jesus spoke of “the sign of his presence…..and he gave a detailed description of definite world events that were to show that he was already “present” as King of God’s Kingdom. His use of this word continues in Matt 24:27, 37, 39.

The sign was unmistakable as these events were to occur in one specific time period.
What were they?
First, he said….
“….See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for these must take place, but is not yet the end.“

False Messiahs were nothing new, but in this age, they would make headlines around the world for all the wrong reasons.
Wars are also nothing new in this world…..conflicts in various nations around the world have always been fought…but Jesus speaks of something greater….he said..

“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom“….this is speaking of a warfare that encompassed many nations…..and we see that 1914 ushered in an age of war, the likes of which had never been seen in human history…..it was first called “The Great War” but later was renamed “The First World War” in the wake of a “Second World War“ which again, drew all nations into conflict.

The First World War occurred at a time when the prospects for peace had never been greater…..this Great War was precipitated by the assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand in Sarajevo….an obscure act that saw the entire world drawn into a global massacre because of alliances that nations had signed off on. This assassination was called “the shot that was heard around the world” because of what it sparked…..the very first global war in man’s history. So the world entered its “last days” in 1914 and it has continued with more heinous warfare and weaponry ever since.

What else did Jesus say….?
“and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. But all these things are the beginning of birth pangs.“

So like labor pains on a pregnant woman, these signs begin suddenly and continue, sometimes for long periods until birth is finally achieved.
Just after the war was the outbreak of the Spanish Flu pandemic, which affected all nations and actually took more lives than the war did (mentioned by Luke)…..food shortages also plagued the nations as men were sent to fight, leaving the women at home to try and keep the food supplies going…much of which was sent to the troops, leaving civilians rationed for meager supplies.

“Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.”

True Christians would be hated because they refused to be “part of the world” in its bloody wars, its greedy commercialism, and its inept false religions, being a force for nothing good in the world, but just tagging along, supporting their governments in their indiscriminate slaughter. (James 4:4) At times even killing their own brothers of the same faith. (1 John 4:20-21)

“At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many.”

From the end of the 19th century onward, there was what was called “the great awakening” where the churches of Christendom, long entrenched in people’s minds and weekly activities, began to fall from grace as a new age emerged among western nations in particular. Feminist movements sprang up as inequality among the sexes was challenged by strong minded women, no longer wanting to be chattels owned by their husbands and fathers. Traditional views were challenged and those seeking freedom of choice and freedom of speech, were met with opposition. False prophets were common as this new age began…..seeking to invite people to follow their own philosophies.
Science too was beginning to challenge long held views about creation, which also caused waves of opposition.

“Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.”

Has this been seen to be ever increasing as the world has forgotten how to love their fellow man? Selfish focus on wealth and position and fame, have turned humans into selfish monsters. Violence and immorality dominate the world scene as Jesus said it would. (Matt 24:37-39)

Politics and a vast array of divisive elements separate people in their families, in their neighborhoods, in their own nations, and with nations against each other now threatening the very existence of all living things on this planet. Who can deny that “love” is not the dominant feature of life today…..it is murderous “hatred”.

“But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.“

What is it that we must endure if we are to be saved from an “END” that is sure to come?

We have to endure as Christ commanded, not as the churches of Christendom have compromised on their standards, wary of creating waves in their congregations because the pastor’s salary is dependent on money in the plate. Not a good reason to abandon Christ’s teachings, but understandable if it means losing the privileges that are expected in that profession.

And then there was this…..

”This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.”

Who were going to preach this “gospel of the kingdom” to the whole world during these last days, when Christendom’s churches could not even agree on what the Bible teaches among themselves?…..and they have no idea what the Kingdom of God is, so they offer excuses as to why they fail to carry out this command of the Master. (Matthew 28:19-20) It was not a recommendation….it was a direct command…..so what is the message that Christendom fails to make known to the people before “the end comes”?

For obvious reasons we do not see the churches out preaching as Jesus said…..

“And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay at his house until you leave . As you enter the house, give it your greeting. If the house is worthy, give it your peace. But if it is not worthy, take back your peace. Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.”

Its a search and rescue mission…..it’s both a duty and a responsibility to carry out this assignment because acceptance of the message is what a “sheep” does……refusal is what a “goat” does…..Jesus is present and has been for over 100 years, separating the “sheep from the goats”….soon he will manifest as judge, but by then it will be too late….Jesus’ “presence” and his “coming” are two separate events……we have been given ample time in between to show God who we are and where our loyalties lie.

Christ will be the judge…..and he will make no mistakes. Are we ready?

The Lord Jesus also said not to believe anyone who says- "He's in the secret chambers....!!" and He warned us about false prophets--

You teach that that Jesus returned in 1914 invisibly- and picked JWs as bestest church.
how many time have JWs been proven wrong about this now?
No wonder you ignore my posts about this.

This is an incorrect rendering as Jesus was not speaking of his “coming” but of his “presence” (parousia).
Untrue.

Matthew 24:3 Greek

3952 [e]
parousias
παρουσίας
coming
N-GFS

Of the numerous English bibles now in existence, all but one translate "parousia(s)" in Matthew 24:3 as "coming".

In addition, the definition of "parousia" encompasses both "coming" and "presence". They are mutually inclusive, not exclusive.

There cannot be a presence without a preceding coming.

"Strong's Concordance
parousia: a presence, a coming"
2. the presence of one coming..."

Strong uses "return" as a synonym for "coming" in Matthew 24:3.

"In the N. T. especially of the advent, i. e. the future, visible, return from heaven of Jesus, the Messiah, to raise the dead, hold the last judgment, and set up formally and gloriously the kingdom of God: Matthew 24:3;"

Your claim of an incorrect rendering is itself incorrect.
