Wow.
Thanks for weighing in on this.

Groaning that cannot be uttered is speaking about your carnal prayers vs your human spirit praying. Anybody can sit around thinking constantly about all of their issues and the things they have to do during the day while they are praying but speaking in unknown tongues in your prayer is your human spirit praying and it is not your carnal thinking praying. Huge difference. God listens to unknown tongues intently.

Why you don't have to speak in tongues - Or do you?

My tongue speaks at every opportunity....and that in a non native language, but who can understand it? I certainly do. Even here at this forum, many have no idea what I'm saying; they might even think I'm blaspheming.....because their native language is preferable to them.

....and what is my/ their native language? is it not the language of self justification, of survival of the fittest and relegating those who poke in the eye to hell.
.....so, what is the language my tongue speaks when opportunity arises? It is the good news for the broken hearted and hope for the despairing. It is the message of the wonderful works of God. Acts 2:11

.....further; listen to Peter's explanation of what and how this fits together....Acts 2:22-36

It is too often assumed that speaking in tongues is about making physical sounds in an unlearned/ foreign language......and this may well be in certain circumstances, however what is missed is what was/ is spoken of/ about.

How many manifestations of the modern phenomena of 'speaking in tongues' shares the message of the resurrected Jesus, of hope for the hopeless and comfort for the downtrodden of sin?

From my experience in circles that practice 'speaking in tongues', gobbledygook and self engrandisment has been the order of the day.
Obviously, you have never been alone with God, speaking in tongues until you have lost all desire to sin after about a half hour or more(lost in the spirit of prayer). Obviously, when you pray you think and think and think and think while you tell God all of your carnal ideas and complaints. Like help me help me help me God help me help me. That is how people generally pray. That’s not what the Holy Ghost is all about. It is your human spirit praying things that your flesh cannot understand or thoughts that are beyond your comprehension.

As I was driving to work today, I could barely pray thinking about dealing with all of my stuff I have to do. I just had to speak in tongues under the power of God for a few minutes, and I felt refreshing from the Holy Ghost come on me. Much of our life we spend in carnal rational thinking. We’re not praying for souls or for God to use us to reach the lost etc. All we’re praying for is gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme. That is where tongues comes in. Unknown tongues is the real deal. It is a personal Way of praying when you are too carnal to know what to pray for.

What you consider obvious Truther, is clearly not my experience!

In other words, we dont have the words to translate it.

Pop quiz, lol.

Who's groans? Ours or the Holy Spirit's?!

(Hint) It is a trick question! Think hard.
Romans 8:26: "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Speaking in tongues, compared to not speaking in tongues is like using a rowboat instead of a motor boat. Some people try to do it on their own and some people need assistance because the path is too difficult.

Have you ever taken a recording of people speaking in tongues and put it through Google translate?

If it was a viable language....it would translate. But the "tongues" I've heard spoken are extremely regional and none are similar to other regions where the practice is claimed.

Not to mention all the many catastrophe that have occurred because people were convinced that they had the gift. Many have died or been stranded in foreign countries because of their beliefs. (Obviously not popular discussion topics)

That would be cool to try. I've use google translate quite a bit since I discovered it. Two Filipino gals were talking in Filipino on a forum and I used GT to read along. I stayed out of their conversation I just listened, lol. It was just girl talk.

I heard a girl speaking in tongues in church and she was speaking loud but everybody sort of ignored her and it finished and she left. I wondered if it was real? I know it is now.

Doesn't scripture say when you receive the Baptism of the Holy Ghost that a sign of it is tongues? So everyone who has been baptized in spirit has spoke in tongues. So if you've never spoke in tongues before then you have not been baptized in the spirit? Would that be right?

I always make it my will to pray from my spirit even if it is not in tongues. All I do is focus my spirit on God before I start praying. Our spirit is wiser than our carnal self, the Holy Spirit bears witness directly with our spirit and speaks directly to him! (I wish I could listen in sometimes!) But our Conscience is also a function of our spirit so we do get to hear about his wisdom! We better listen to our consciences!

You've also opened a can of worms, lol. Tongues is prayer to God and carnal man can get his prayers answered sometimes (Ask me how I know!) butI have a suspicion that many people do not pray because they tried to pray before and their prayers were not answered so it didnt work for them so they stop trying...

So then, what are the requirements for an answered prayer? See the can of worms?! Does that need it's own thread? I have a feeling this could get long. and it has little to nothing to do with tongues...

Worms in the can consist of this;.....
Taking the objective juggernaut of the good news of the resurrected Jesus and turning it into a message of a subjective experience....then continuing to major on the subjective.

I will keep it short. Unknown tongues is as simple as this… 2 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speak not unto men, but unto God…

Simply, the entire chapter is about speaking unto God in unknown tongues. It just shows us how to do it.

This is a New Testament experience that the Holy Ghost has provided for the New Testament Church.

If you deliberately skip this part, you have no business with other Holy Ghost gifts.

I don't think we can limit it that way.
Certainly, "2 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speak not unto men, but unto God…"
has nothing to do with...

1 Corinthians 14:27-28 NIV
If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—
should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.
28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet
in the church and speak to himself and to God.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 1 Cor 13

There is good reason why the possession of the HS ended.

When we use 'speaking in tongues' (particularly as it is understood/ interpreted by the Pentecostal movement) as the measure of the HS, we turn the God appointed agency (HS) of the Good News (by the way, which has not ended) into a subjective and subtle or not so subtle self seeking exercise.....and so becomes a counterfeit.

Isolating scripture to establish man-made interference(unbelief) is a BIG NO-NO with the FATHER, the LORD and the HOLY SPIRIT

Genesis, the Gospel, Acts, 1 Corinthians and Revelation DICTATE/COMMAND to us when and where the gifts will cease.

Understanding why the gifts of the Holy Spirit began and eventually ceased is a crucial aspect of studying NT Scripture. The Gospel faced significant challenges in its early stages, and without the gifts of the Holy Spirit, its success would have been uncertain. Once the Gospel took root and the Church was established, these gifts were no longer needed and gradually ceased.
