In response to ongoing concerns about my "negative" topics...
Perhaps one or two with a positive direction would be in order. ???
I still needed a captivating topic title. So there's that.
What's so great about Jesus?
- He didn't write a book, or even his own Gospel.
- Didn't hold a political office, even though we call him King.
- He didn't work within the established religion that he was raised in.
- In fact, he was quite critical of that religion.
- Nor did he defend Israel against Roman occupation.
- Nor prevent that government from carrying out his capital punishment.
- He died a criminal's death.
(hang on, I'll get to the positive stuff here soon)
What's so great about Jesus? (cont'd)
- His birth was special. Born of a virgin.
- His family escaped to Egypt. Avoiding the slaughter of innocents.
- Grew up in a small and insignificant town. "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
- Raised as a carpenter's son. But didn't take over the family business.
- He had another Father's business to be about.
- Lived his adult life as a homeless person.
- Called twelve disciples to join him in his homelessness.
(be patient, we'll get to the positive stuff here soon)
What's so great about Jesus? (cont'd)
- His Father's business was...
- to proclaim good news to the poor...
- to proclaim freedom for the prisoners...
- recover sight to the blind...
- to set the oppressed free...
- AND to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
(that was positive, right?)
What's so great about Jesus? (cont'd)
- Turned water into wine. (before his time)
- Became a sensation among common folks.
- And a thorn to the religious leaders.
- Left us with some significant teaching about how to live.
- But more than that, showed the way to life.
- Gave his life to save us.
- And rose from the dead on the third day.
- Promised to return some day. Maranatha!
I'd say that's pretty great.
How would you answer the question?
What's so great about Jesus?
