I'm kind of tired of this whole OSAS thing.
But I'd like to bring your attention to the fact the when John wrote those words you posted above, He was on in years and gnosticism had already invaded the church and he was very worried about these gnostics affecting Christians and Christianity with heretical teachings.
John meant the gnostics in speaking of those that went out because they did not belong.
In fact, they DID NOT belong and were heretical followers that could not accept the truth.
Please look into this...this verse is so misused.

I am also tired of the gnostic excuse to ignore what John said.
22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
It is not just Gnostics who deny the son, Athiests do. Any unbeliever does.
he also seperated them from true believers
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
Unlike the unbelievers who did nto know truth. These people recieved the anointing and knew truth
The verse is not misused, it is factual
