Jesus says to some 'I never knew you' even when they thought they knew him. Matthew 7:22-23
It appears that whatever they thought they knew of Jesus didn't resonate with Jesus. These same folk parade a litany of works which they thought qualified them as knowing him.

Does this mean they never had the opportunity to know him or does it mean that when the opportunity to know him was presented to them they turned away constructed a Jesus that suited their narrative/ paradigm?

Salvation is about relationship, it's not about a head full of information...right or wrong. Relationship is about pressing the flesh, the sweat and the blood. It is not about academic prowess in and with religious information.

Jesus' return in the clouds will be a rescue mission of his friends. He will take them to be where he is because a free life on Earth has become impossible. Even those friends who sleep in the grave will be released from those bonds.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-18
According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Corinthinans 15:50-54
I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

Revelation 22:12-13
Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Matthew 24:26-27
So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man

Matthew 24:30-31
Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory and he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

These are told to depart from him on the basis of them working iniquity

Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied (( in thy name)) and (( in thy name)) have cast out devils and (( in thy name )) done many wonderful works?

Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never (( knew you )) depart from me, (( ye )) that work iniquity.

Paul seemed to understand this when he wrote to them who "named the name "of Christ to depart from iniquity

2 Ti 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal,
The Lord (( knoweth them )) that are his. And, Let every one (( that nameth )) the name of Christ (( depart )) from iniquity.

Either depart from iniquity (as Paul says) or depart from Christ ye that work iniquity (as Jesus says)

Psalm 101:4 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

How about this.

Proverbs 30:8-9
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

Psalm 101:4 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

Here's another one.

1 Corinthians 5:13
But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

It can probably be shown a little better this way too

Isaiah 59:3 Your iniquities have separated between you and your God

Concerning Jesus Christ they say,

Acts 3:26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

The Father speaking to Jesus Christ says,

Heb 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

While we were yet sinners Christ died for us, as it also says

Ti 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

And so as Paul says,

Romans 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

Paul also says, "Let every one that names the name of Christ to depart from iniquity"

2 Ti 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

And these were naming His name

Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

But did not depart from iniquity as Paul tells them to

Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

It appears that 'iniquity' has a religious face.

You have all correctly recognized that forsaking sin and iniquity in this life is essential for salvation, and as @quietthinker noted, we shall be judged by our works, whether they be good or bad.
Interesting dichotomy isn't it, which many don't quite get their minds around. We are not saved by what we do or don't do, yet our salvation hinges one way or the other on those very things.
It's like entering into a country naked, and being welcomed. But in order to become a permanent resident, we must be clothed according to the culture of that country, else we are rejected as genuine candidates for citizenship.

Interesting topic, thanks.
This is a very challenging thing to consider. Here's my POV on the subject.

Prophecy and performing miracles are manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
Although it seems that some can use methods to get results by using Jesus' name as authority.
But in the end, it seems that the relationship was the problem.

Mark 9:38-40 NIV
“Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name
and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”
39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name
can in the next moment say anything bad about me,
40 for whoever is not against us is for us.

Matthew 7:22-23 NIV
Many will say to me on that day,
‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons
and in your name perform many miracles?’
23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Any who see the glory of Jesus will desire to forsake feeding at the pig trough. In spite of their weaknesses, their hearts will be aligned with righteousness.
