"If" there is such a thing as an eternal Hell, then it would Contradict John 3:16. Those who Believe in Him have Everlasting Life in Heaven, those who reject or don't accept him PERISH. Perish meaning the Second Death. The First Death is the Death of the Body, separated from Your Loved ones from Earth. The Second Death is death of the Soul, eternal separation from The Lord Jesus Christ. Hell and Death will cease to ExistRevelation 20:1414And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.No matter how Long you the Judged and Satan burn in this Lake of Fire, it will cease to exist. It can burn them for billions of years, but one day it will cease to exist. Thus eternal separation or the Second Death(Death of the Soul and Spirit).
Just as the first death does not mean an end to our existence, it does not follow that a second death necessarily must mean an end to our existence. And as EVERYONE gets a body again, so one would have to explain why it would be necessary to have a person's body destroyed twice.But Rev 20.10 uses the same exact Greek phrase that every where else he is understood to mean for ever and ever (with NO END), so am not sure how we should assume it will eventually end.Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Not at all, in fact quite the opposite. It is God and ONLY God that can create immortal souls. He holds us in existence, eternally. An immortal soul is built in, a part of what we are when are made, to have souls that live eternally. So it would be God and ONLY God that could annihilate my eternal soul. Hell's "fire" could not do it. And I do have a problem with God annihilating something He made to last for ever. Did God make a mistake and annihilation is cleaning it up? (and that is just one issue with such a view)You are misunderstanding me. Yes the saved have eternal LIFE, and what a LIFE. It will be only in Heaven that we, as humans, can fully be ALIVE. While we can have a glimpes in this life of Heaven, living here cannot compare to being ALIVE in Heaven. To be in Heaven is to be FULLY LIVING. To be in Hell must be the opposite.As to the damned, while I am making a case for their eternal "existence" in Hell, I would hardly call that LIVING when compared to Heaven. So it cannot be equated with "ETERNAL LIFE". That was the whole point of C S Lewis calling the damned in Hell not really human anymore, not really living as human at all, only some "thing" that once was a human life. That is not LIVING eternally. That sound like ETERNAL LIFE to you?Again, yes the first death "kills" the body, but every human gets a body again in the next life, even the damned (and no I do not think the damned get a "glorified" body). If death does not mean an end to our existence the first time, why does a second death have to? Kill the body, only means it is dead and will then decay. It is an end for this lifetime for that person, but that person still exists. And if one believes in an afterlife, "kill" in these verses does not mean an end to being human, every soul will be re-united with a body again. It certainly does not mean annihilation in the first death. So for the same reasons "Kill" the body and soul in Hell does not have to be understood as annihilate. Just as "kill" did the first time, it could certainly represent an "end" of something the second time. As suggested an end to what was once a human life and is now only "what remains". That there must be "what remains" in Hell is derived from our being created with immortal souls and presummably raised in the next life with immortal bodies. Hell could not annihilate such a being. It could certainly corrupt and alter it as we already suggested, even to the point of no longer being recognizable or even thought of as human. But only God could annihilate that which He has made to last eternally. Only God could cause us to cease to "be".

I've been thinking about something else that Jesus said to the religious leaders. He told them that they would receive the greater punishment for taking people to hell with them with their hypocritical ways. This would lead me to believe there are levels of punishment in hell. If souls are annihilated, then how can they serve greater punishments?

The false prophets are the first to be judged at Judgement Day. The blind leaders will be first to be judged. The blind followers (people who aren't realizing deception) will be next in lineup......It is saying this. I mean if we say burning in Hell represents God's revenge, why does a partial burn make God ok, but an eternity makes Him a monster?
