Thanks. I appreciate you.
Could you unpack that a bit more? Some Hebrew rationale?
The Hebrew catch cry is 'God is one'. This might sound basic enough to us yet what it also says is there is no other supernatural being who influences events. This is a surprise to most Christians.
The Hebrews believed God is responsible for every occurrence both good and bad. here is a representative text of how they understood, Isaiah 45:7 'I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
They wrote from this perspective. They held this error and still hold it, though modified somewhat. It is Jesus who clarifies the matter. He clearly states it is Satan who is responsible for anything destructive. Again, a representative text, John 10:10, 'The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Satan is only mentioned 3 times in the OT. They understood Satan to be like we would see a prosecutor; one whose job is tasked to bring out the truth. They did not see Satan as an evil being anymore than we see a prosecutor as an evil being.
There is plenty more to be said on this and unless folk are particularly interested I will not labour it.
