The abomination of desolation is time of the end, and is Daniel 12:11-12 as being "set up".
Daniel 21:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.
The abomination of desolation will be a statue image of the beast (king) that the false prophet has made in Revelation 13:14.
Dougg, I would like to offer an alternative interpretation:
1) The AOD or the "abomination that CAUSES desolation," is the cross. It is the most "abominable"act that mankind could ever inflict against their God... Nothing could compare to this! The destruction of the Temple, the Sanctuary, His people, etc., could not begin to rise to the level of an "abomination that causes desolation." That was already done by the Babylonians. But God would restore His people and His city in time for His coming. He would allow the Babylonians to completely destory everything knowing that He would restore everything in His perfect plan of restoration. And the most important part of that "restoration process" was His arrrival on earth. But He knew they would reject and crucify Him... this too was in His plan of salvation. But He would punish His people for their transgressions by "making desolate" His people from Him for the next 2000 years - time of the Gentiles.
2) So, what is the definition of the AOD - it is the cross which took place exactly 3.5 years after He began His ministry in the final week of the 70 weeks of years prophecy. It was at this time (cross) that the Messiah would take away the sacrifices and the offerings - they were no longer necessary due to His perfect sacrifice. Consequently, the time of the cross is the one end of this time prophecy / element.
3) Now, what is the "set up" of the AOD? This is the other side of the calculation for the 1290 days? It is the first day of His ministry when He would not only be baptized in the Jordan but also anointed by His Father.
4) So we have the beginning time element and the ending time element to calculate this time period of 1290 days. From the first day of His ministry to the day of the cross, would be exactly 1260 days (3.5 years @ 360 days). This was the total time of His ministry on a prophetic understanding. However, there is one more step to complete to bring this calculation to its end. Here is a cut / past from my Chapter 12 commentary that speaks directly to the 1290 day calculation:
Cut and paste section:
Verse 11 represents two separate timed events: the period between when the daily sacrifice was taken away and the setting up of the abomination of desolation. These two events are referenced in Chapter 9. The "abomination of desolation" signifies the crucifixion of the Messiah in the middle of the final week, which equates to 3.5 years of the last seven-year period. The "setting up" of the abomination of desolation begins on the first day of His ministry, marked by His baptism in the Jordan River.
Daniel’s seventy-weeks-of-years prophecy is given in years, with the last week representing seven years. Using 360 days for each prophetic year, the period from the first day of the seventieth week to His crucifixion is 3.5 years or 1,260 days (3.5 years x 360 days per year). However, an adjustment is necessary to account for the Jewish calendar's reconciliation of the solar and lunar calendars, ensuring the spring feast days occur in the spring. Over a nineteen-year cycle, the calendar is adjusted seven times in years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19, adding a 30 day adjustment to that year. During
any three-year period within this cycle, there must be at least one 30-day adjustment.
Thus, the 1,260-day span between the "set up of the abomination" and the crucifixion includes an additional 30 days, totaling 1,290 days. This adjustment is crucial because it aligns with the prophecy’s timeline and helps us understand the timing of His second coming.
Dougg, this is why the definition of the AOD represents the cross and not some unimportant destruction of a supposedly rebuilt Temple, etc. Daniel is really all about Him... not some boogeyman coming some 2000 years in the future..... That was ALL started by Father Ribera of the Jesuits in the 16th century and was commissioned by the little horn (papacy).
Now, if you accept this calculation, it should be very easy to calculate the 1335 days prophecy... God has purposely given us the formula for His first coming and we should use that same formula for His second coming ---- it is all about HIM.
