At the present mortality rate, that's a bit over 1 million deaths. I think it will be a fraction of that, because the mortality rate is mostly measured on the number of infections that make on sick enough to seek medical care. I'm praying that it will be a small fraction of that, but we don't know.

On a CDC teleconference briefing the person said that virtually every American will be exposed to the virus either this year or next. That surprised me.

When the government tries to hide information on an epidemic, it causes distrust and panic. I realize that Trump's nature is such that he reflexively tries to hide anything that he thinks might be bad for him personally, but that really doesn't matter when it comes to the public. If their president lies to them and hides information about a growing epidemic, they will respond poorly.

That's how it works.

Just did. And it's no longer on the coronavirus page. You can still find some testing information, but you have to look around a little. The number of patients tested is apparently removed, but there is a page that lists the number of tests done, which would give you some indication. There have been about 11,000 tests. Assuming one test per patient, there were 11,000 people with or suspected of being infected, who were tested.

Does anyone REALLY KNOW exactly how many have been infected, how many have recovered, how many have died, how many have been misdiagnosed? All the numbers that are being thrown around are guesses at best and disinformation at worst.

For most countries, we have pretty good numbers. A few, including the U.S., haven't been very transparent about it.

Isn't that the way all pandemics work? That's how it was with the Spanish Influenza, for example. First there wasn't a pandemic. Then, as it spread, "all of a sudden" there was.

Apparently, Trump has flipped, accepted the fact that this isn't going to go away, as he has previously claimed. He just banned travel from Europe. He's also making treatment easier for people with limited means, and other actions. We lost valuable time, but give him credit for doing some important things.

Edit: Apparently, you can still travel from England to the United States. So if you live in the rest of Europe, you'll have to drive to England and take a flight from there.

Trump said something that I didn't believe at first since he says so many wacky things. Then I ran into other news. I'm still not sure what the exact situation is. It is possible that prior administrations share some of the blame for the difficulty in producing test kits.

I read a while ago that India was halting exports of various medicines because they got many of the chemicals they use to manufacture them from China, and they were worried that maybe China would cut off exports of those chemicals.

Then I ran across another article about a German firm that operates in Maryland having trouble finding enough of some chemical that does something to the RNA. (I forgot to bookmark that article.) Today I read that Senator Rubio was talking about the problem. I found it on video.

I think Rubio is probably right; and it is a national security issue that should have been dealt with under Bush and Obama. Yes, Trump has had three years to act. There may be a similar problem with face masks. Some are produced in the US , but we also depend on China for many.
