I was on X earlier this evening and saw this question being discussed: How old were you when you realized that you were going to die someday? The comments and accompanying stories were fascinating. I thought that perhaps it would make for an interesting topic on CB.

So, how old were you when you realized it? What, if you care to share it, is the backstory of your moment?

I was about 5 years old when I realized that someday I was going to die. I watched as one of my uncles tightly wrapped the legs of my great grandfather with bandages. The grownups in the room spoke in hushed voices about how “His time is drawing near.” I had no idea what they meant until a short time later my great grandfather died. The thought crossed my mind, “I wonder if this is how it will be when my time comes?” It was then that I first realized that someday I will die.

It didn’t bother me at the time because I hadn’t yet thought about what it really means to be dead. I just simply didn’t see my great grandfather around anymore. I wasn’t allowed to go the funeral home or to the cemetery. I had the odd idea that he was always at the barn, milking the cows. I didn’t discuss it with anyone. I just assumed that one day, a long time in the future, I would go to the same barn he went to, milk the cows (with him?), and never come back to the house.

One day, probably 6-7 years later, a Southern Baptist preacher disabused me of my childish thought in a terrifying hellfire and brimstone sermon.

For me it was when I was 2 or 3. Us kids used to go to the avery every morning to see the birds. One day we went and the birds had all been chopped in half by a terrorist. So much for the liberation fronts, my life was always a bit off since then.

“Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, …”

(Hebrews 9:27, NABRE)

I just spoke with someone who doesn’t believe that human beings die. The question he posed to me was this: Who appointed it? I’ve never been asked that before.

I told him that God is the one who appointed it. He said he would look into it sometime.

My earliest realization, as opposed to the vague thought of it in my teenage mind was when I was 19. Getting ready to out on a date with my then boyfriend (who became my husband some years later) when my father had a strange turn and passed away in what seemed like a bad dream. I was standing right beside him and he made a strange sound and suddenly he was not breathing anymore. We called an ambulance but it was too late. He’d had a massive heart attack and in a matter of seconds, my Dad wasn’t here anymore. He was only 52.

Slapped in the face with this reality, I suddenly I began to think about death not befalling just old people, but could happen to anyone, at any time, for any number of reasons. It was sobering and I started to think deeply about it. This is when I got interested in the Bible…..I wanted to know what happened to us when we died, because my father was not a Church goer and I began to wonder if he had gone to that ‘other place’….the very thought of it haunted me, and no one seemed to be able to tell me what the Bible said about death. I had heard all the “heaven and hell“ scenarios but I wanted the Bible’s answer…shown to me in black and white.

The only ones who could give me a clear scriptural picture were Jehovah’s Witnesses, and what they showed me from my own Bible, not only made sense to me, but offered comfort at a time when the topic caused me extreme stress.
I found out why death is so terrifying for so many people, especially in Western cultures where the ‘heaven or hell’ scenario is pushed. What kind of a God would create us to die, but make us terrified of doing so?

If heaven was the destination, then dying should be accompanied by rejoicing….it never is...especially if it’s a young person.

But if a “hell” of fiery torment awaits a person, why was it that every funeral I ever attended spoke of the deceased, whom I knew were unrepentant sinners, as if they were saints? No one ever said the “H” word…..

What did the Bible say? What is the big mystery about death and if it is meant to happen, why does it feel so wrong?
I found out from studying the Bible, that death was never supposed to happen to the human race. We were designed to live forever here on a lovingly prepared earth, transformed into paradise conditions by the willing labors of mankind, instructed to “fill the earth and subdue it”…I never knew what that meant before.

The garden of Eden was a blueprint of what God wanted the whole world to look like….and he designed humans with his creative flare and eye for beauty. It would be a labor of love.

This was to be man’s permanent home….and there was no natural cause of death in Eden because sin was the only cause of death mentioned. If Adam and his wife had remained obedient to God’s command, they never would have died, having access to “the tree of life” meant living forever in mortal flesh. (Gen 3:22-24)

Being mortal doesn’t mean you have to die…only that you can.

I read Eccl 9:5, 6, 10, and discovered that when we die, we go into an unconscious “sleep”. A sleep that only God can awaken us from. Jesus demonstrated the resurrection that Jews were taught to believe in….
John 11: 11-14 is the account about the raising of Lazarus…..Jesus said he was “sleeping”….not that his soul had gone somewhere else. There is no soul to go anywhere.

I came to understand the difference between the soul and the spirit, to discover that they do not have the same meaning at all.
At Genesis 3:19 it tells us that Adam would return to the dust from which he was created. There was no mention of a “heaven or hell” scenario to him, which if such existed, would have been remiss of God not to warn him of such a dire consequence for his sin……Adam was simply told that he would die….nothing more.

I also discovered that Adam was not given a “soul” but “became” one when God started him breathing. So a “soul” in the Bible, is a living, breathing creature, whether man or animals…..all breathers are “souls. (Eccl 3:19-20) We all breathe the same air and die the same death.

According to Ezekiel, “souls” die. (Ezek 18:4) Souls are not immortal….therefore we do not have to invent places for them to go….Christendom got very creative with that idea….

Jews were taught to believe in a resurrection, which is a restoration of life, rather than a continuation of it.
Somehow the teaching of a resurrection got replaced with the pagan Greek concept of an immortal soul, which is a physical impossibility, because souls are always mortal.

Jesus himself will perform these resurrections when he calls all the dead from their graves, back into the arms of their loved ones here on earth for the majority. (John 5:28-29) Some who have been specially chosen, will go to heaven to rule with Jesus, (Rev 20:6) but by and large, the bulk of mankind will resume their life on earth…a life that is now free of all the encumbrances caused by the defection in Eden. The life we were meant to have in the beginning, Christ paid with his life to give back to us. Living in paradise….in peace and happiness with those we love……who could want more?

With the end of this vital lesson in sight, the precedents created will mean that no human or angel will ever derail God’s purpose again and his plans for this vast Universe, whatever they may be, will have no impediments for all eternity….and free will is retained as the precious gift it was meant to be.“Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, …”

(Hebrews 9:27, NABRE)
Hebrews 9:27-28 reads….
”And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,
so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await him.”

“Appointed…to die once and after this comes judgment”…..
There is much in these words that needs understanding in the big picture.
It was Adam who sinned in the beginning, bringing the condemnation of death on all of his children as a dreadful inheritance (Rom 5:12)…..but why did all men (people) have to die because of Adam’s sin?
Why was that “appointed” by God? And what is the “judgment” that comes “after”?

Christendom’s version of things never answered those questions for me….but a Bible study did because I now had the picture on the box to guide me as to where all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle fit.

Three perfect beings had abused their free will and derailed God’s first purpose from the beginning….
So what was God’s first purpose for the human race. They were not created for life in heaven because mortal material beings were created to live in a material world, with external life support, placed on one planet in a vast material Universe. They were given specific instructions….but failed to follow them.

God already had a large family of spirit beings who dwell in the same realm as he does. They are not adversely affected by his presence as humans would be. (Moses asked to see God, but was told that the experience would end his life.)

So creating the material Universe with such vastness that is only now beginning to be understood by astronomers, we can then begin to comprehend that such vastness was not created without purpose, just as our earth and the living beings upon it, were not created without purpose.

In just our solar system, the earth is uniquely geared to support life….and life exists in abundance here…sadly though the wickedness among humankind has made this beautiful planet into a garbage dump. Having learned nothing from creation itself about caring for the environment that supports their life, they have threatened their very existence because of their selfishness and greed for wealth and power, which naturally corrupted them to an unconscionable degree. For the first time since creation humans have the ability to destroy all life on this planet…..what does that say about our intelligence…or lack of it?

Did God go to all this trouble only to give up when his creation defected? Or is there a reason why he chose to handle the rebellion the way he did, involving all mankind and even the angels in an object lesson that would create precedents for all eternity to come?

As one who “knows the end from the beginning”, God saw the long term benefits of his decision.
In order to maintain the gift of free will, (a vital component in man’s being created in God’s image) God would demonstrate with first hand experience what happens when we disobey the commands of our loving Creator, who would never make rules that were not for our benefit. We were not created to be the judge of our own activities, we were created to obey the commands of our Creator and enjoy the benefits of never knowing evil. Deviating from that path is what got us into this mess. Thinking we know better than the one who made us. Every evil act committed is an abuse of free will. Yet we continue to make the same stupid mistakes for the same stupid reasons!

All those who have died as a result of inherited sin, will be granted a resurrection…(John 5:28-29) and at this time it is determined whether they inherit life, or judgment. As the majority will have lived and died without knowledge of God and his Christ, a period of 1000 years has been set aside for their education and opportunity to accept the true God for who, and what, he is….our Supreme Sovereign. No rebel will ever be permitted to derail God’s purpose again.

God’s justice will come to the fore as he has appointed Jesus as the King of his kingdom or government of mankind, that will return the human race to their original sinless perfection.

A wonderful future awaits those whom God invites into his universal family of obedient sons and daughters. (Rev 21:2-4)

I have studied hard to find the reasons for basing my faith on solid scriptural knowledge of God, the redemptive role of his son, and his original purpose for us…..and the earth.

What about you Matthias?
What is your big picture? And why is it that you avoid the “Christian” label? I am guessing that Christendom’s departure from the Scriptural truths found in the Bible might have something to do with that….they have made “Christianity” a dirty word to many people.

I’m a primitive Christian, Ante Nicene, a Jewish monotheist; not a Nicene affirming Christian. I originally registered here as “Christian” but a few of the Nicene Christians strenuously objected to me being allowed to become a member since I didn’t meet the board’s definition of Christianity. In response to their objections, I publicly proposed a solution that was subsequently reviewed and approved by board administrators. I voluntarily changed my registration from “Christian” to “Other Faith”. I don’t have posting privileges in forums marked “Christians Only” and the Nicene affirming Christians seldom seek me out for conversation in the two “Christian Formation & Apologetics” forums and the three “Non-Christian Forums” where I do having posting privileges. It‘s been a Win-Win solution to the problem.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me that “primitive“ Christianity has suffered so many bleeding wounds over the centuries since Christ introduced what was a Judeo/Christian faith. And they are still bleeding.
He did not come to establish a new religion, but to clean up the old one which had become a train wreck over the intervening centuries since God sent his last prophet to his wayward nation. Time just gives the devil more opportunities to sabotage the truth.

The religious leaders in Judaism suffered greatly when Christ exposed them for religious hypocrites that they were….he didn’t miss an opportunity to castigate them for their many errors. The problem of poor leadership in Israel was always the cause of the nation’s downfall, because when bad leadership took over, the whole nation suffered. When Christ came as Messiah, the religious leaders made sure that he was painted as a trouble making fraud. To this day they still deny him.

Interestingly, Jesus was sent..not to the religious leaders in Israel, but to “the lost sheep” whose shepherds had given up on them. When Jesus came, he fed those lost ones (spiritually) and drew them in with his genuine love and care….showing them how much his Father cared for them.

I too am not a Nicene Christian and retain strongly the Jewish belief in the deity of the Father alone.
But I also identify as a “Christian”….which to me is a follower of Christ. I do not entertain the false beliefs of Christendom, which are far removed from what Christ taught, but I see them as the “weeds” of Jesus parable. “Churchianity” masquerades as “Christianity.
The “wheat” are still in the world, and they are out doing what Christ commanded, not making excuses for why they don’t. (Matt 28:19-20; Matt 24:14; Matt 10:11-14)

To me a knowledge of theology is simple brainwashing….it has little to do with study of the whole Bible and loses its overarching theme about God’s Kingdom.…and way more to do with Scripture that they can twist to promote their erroneous doctrines. Like the Jews before them, they are corrupted by the same enemy. (Matt 15:7-9)

I had prayed the Lord’s Prayer in church many times, but never knew what I was praying for. Once I learned about God’s kingdom, and what it was going to do for redeemed mankind, a whole new world opened up to me. I have asked many on here what God’s Kingdom is, and their answers are never conclusive…..just guesses based on poor study and lack of solid Bible knowledge.
There seems to be no denominational consensus….yet it was the theme of Jesus’ entire ministry.

I am glad you were allowed to keep posting as I know that so many sites have closed down due to people abandoning the discussions because of the limits placed on what you can and cannot say on the touchy subjects. No subject should be off limits for rational discussion….it’s the hot heads who need to be banned, not the topics.
Free speech is stifled because the hot heads can’t exercise self control…and a slanging match ensues…we should be able to agree to disagree amicably, but some just want to send everyone who disagrees with them to hell! ….an indication in itself that they have none of the spirit of God in them. He would never have invented such a place.

Do you have fellowship with others of like mind as yourself?

I do have fellowship with others of my faith but not locally. I haven’t attended a church service in person with like-minded believers since I retired in 2016 and moved back to Kentucky from Atlanta.

Do your fellow believers have a name?
And how do they differ from the mainstream, in beliefs and practice……? Just curious…
Its a long time to be without personal fellowship. How do you deal with that?

Yes. Restoration Fellowship.

Please see the link to our statement of faith / beliefs.

It’s difficult to be an isolated believer. I don’t recommend it. I stay in contact by email, telephone conversations, and internet broadcasts.

@Matthias , I looked up some of your links, and it appears as if your beliefs and ours are very similar…..but we have a global brotherhood over 8.5 million strong, world wide. Our fellowship is personal and regular as we follow the same study program in every nation, keeping us unified. We have shepherds to guide and direct us, as Jesus said we should. Every congregation has a body of elders, no one man is responsible for taking care of the whole congregation.

We are there if needed by a fellow believer in trouble…the whole congregation will rally to help out.
In times of natural disasters we are often first on scene with help for our brothers to rebuild homes and lives.
We are a global family who all have the same Father. Like the first Christians we are visible in our communities, not welcomed often in the work for which Jesus Christ sent us, but we are under his command to preach “the good news of God’s Kingdom“ and to make disciples of every one who will listen. (Matt 28:19-20; Matt 24:14)

We have many meeting places in all nations, except where our work is banned. Like the early Christians under persecution, we find ways to be discreet. No one tells us we cannot worship our God, Yahweh/Jehovah.

And no one tells us we cannot bring “the good news of God’s Kingdom” to anyone we meet. The need for good news has never been greater.

We have the words of Jesus in John 15:18-21…to explain why the world might want to silence us like they did Jesus’ early disciples…..he told them…
”If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because you are no part of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, for this reason the world hates you. 20 Keep in mind the word I said to you: A slave is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have observed my word, they will also observe yours. 21 But they will do all these things against you on account of my name, because they do not know the One who sent me.”

We find that the majority who identify as Christians do not know the one who sent Christ into the world.
And because this is a salvation issue (John 17:3) it explains what Jesus said in Matt 7:13-14 and 21-23.
Because we do not agree with their doctrines, they dislike us…some intensely.
I guess you have met with the same issue.

We cannot be Christians in isolation….God provides a brotherhood to meet with as Paul said…
Hebrews 10:24-25…..
”And let us consider one another so as to incite to love and fine works, 25 not forsaking our meeting together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as you see the day drawing near.”

We “see the day drawing near” so our meeting together becomes all the more important.…what about you?

Is there a reason why he speaks about it frequently. Has something happened to make his ask ?
You know I have no recollection even considering my own death. Death itself I had come to know from having animals and the grand parents that passed. Considering my own death is only something that has entered my thoughts, and sometimes fears ( when and how ect ) over the past few years and more so since I retired.

Yes. A Sunday School lesson.

A few examples:

When will I die?

Why will I die? Do you think someone wants to kill me?

How much does it hurt when you die?

When you die, will I cry? When I die, will people cry?

After I die I’m going to see what color Jesus’ eyes are. Do you think his eyes are the same color as mine?

Should I be afraid of dying?

My friend at school said his grandmother died and they are going to have a party. Do dead people go to parties?

How long will I sleep when I’m dead?
