Metaphor: One thing conceived as representing another, a symbol
Matthew 21:28-32,
- But what think ye, a certain man(God is metaphorically used as the father of the two sons) had two sons and he came to the first and said, son go work to day in my vineyard (physical vineyard is a metaphor for Gods kingdom)
he answered and said, I will not, but afterward he repented(changed his mind) and went
and he came to the second and said likewise and he answered and said...
I go Sir and went not. (first he said he would go but changed his mind, and did not go)
- Which of the two did the will of his father?
- they say unto Jesus the first son, Jesus saith unto them,
Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you
for John came unto you in the way of righteousness and ye believed him not but the publicans and the harlots believed him and ye when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him
Lessons we can learn from Jesus teaching on Biblical repentance:
Both sons changed their minds but only one Biblically repented.
Therefore according to Jesus repentance requires a change of ones actions in this case the first son sinned by disobeying his father but in his repentant heart turned from his disobedience and obeyed by working his fathers commandment.
The second said he would go but changed his mind and did no works befitting of true repentance.
Acts 26:20,
- but shewed first unto them of Damacus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judea,
and then to the gentiles that they should repent and turn to God and do works meet for repentance
So the lesson learn about repentance is according to Jesus if you do not stop the sin and work fruits of repentance then your repentance is not doing the will of God.
