Understanding why the gifts began and ended is an important study of Scripture. The Gospel had certain head winds which would have made it unsuccessful without the HS gifts. Once the Gospel established roots the gifts ceased.
F2F
Well, that is earthbound human speculation.

If it were Holy Spirit Truth, you would be able to find it in the Scripture = but you cannot for it does not exist.

What we can See is the EXACT time when the gifts cease as given to us in Genesis, Gospel, Acts, 1 Corinthians and Revelation.

It was first communicated through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him, 2:4 while God confirmed their witness with signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Heb 2:3–4.

I'll begin to open up the subject and as we progress the principles will become apparent even to the most discerning reader.

GREAT Scripture

It makes no claim whatsoever on cessation of gifts = ZIPPO

What you are attempting to do is try and find scriptures to support your position = which you should but will be unable to do!!!

SAME as pre-trib rapture = not a single scripture in the entire Bible supports it or even speaks it = SAME with cessation of gifts.

Human error always falls flat in the LIGHT of Scripture AND this should build your confidence in the Holy Scriptures.

The evidence is rather confronting when we actually read the Bible with care!

Where is the brother who can speak Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Chinese, and half-a-dozen other languages “as the Spirit gives him utterance”?

Peter and John healed the lame man with a word “in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth” (Acts 3:6). Where is the present claimant of the Holy Spirit whom God similarly honours? Even the shadow of Peter appears to have healed the sick (Acts 5:15, 16). The mere touch of Christ’s garment healed a sick woman (Luke 8:46). And it was not only healing: the mere word of Peter brought about the death of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5.). And Paul, as occasion called, could either strike an Elymas blind (Acts 13:11) or raise a Eutychus from the dead (Acts 20:9, 10).

“We are God’s witnesses,” said the apostles, “and so also is the Holy Spirit which God hath given to them that obey him” (Acts 5:30–32).

Did they obey? Those who had the HS?

The apostle Paul actually lamented the abuse of the gift of the Holy Spirit, and one misguided believer who had been baptised but had not the Spirit even making the enormous mistake of supposing that the Holy Spirit could be bought by money! (Acts 8:18)

“Are all apostles?” says Paul (1 Cor. 12:29). “Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But desire earnestly the best gifts.” The “signs” and “witness” of the Holy Spirit followed in many cases, but not in all. If any claim to possess the Holy Spirit now let them show the “signs” and produce the “witness.”

Who would not gladly yield to such?

“Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them.” So said Moses of old (Num. 11:29).

And so will say every enlightened follower of Moses, be he Jew or Gentile.

What do we have today?

The “witness” having been accomplished, and declension having set in, a silence of God followed, as the prophets had foretold. God has for a long time “holden his peace.” “There is no answer of God” (Mic. 3:6, 7). A famine of hearing the words of the Lord has set in, and men “run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord” and do not find it (Amos 8:11–12).

Even here in this forum they run to and fro - saying this or saying that - none have the HS gifts - they ceased a long long time ago!

How will the silence be broken? And who has prepared their heart for that day of the Lord?

AGAIN, this is YOUR human intellect speculation by playing 'fit the square peg in the round hole'

ZERO scriptures that declare 'cessation of gifts.'

Why guess with human intellect when you can KNOW the Truth???

God has already given to us the EXACT time when the gifts cease as given to us in Genesis, Gospel, Acts, 1 Corinthians and Revelation.

“Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him …”

This is how the silence will be broken!

I don't think we can limit it that way.
Certainly, "2 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speak not unto men, but unto God…"
has nothing to do with...

1 Corinthians 14:27-28 NIV
If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—
should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.
28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet
in the church and speak to himself and to God.

[
Look at the bottom of your passage… To himself and to God.
This is how you speak to God.
Unknown tongues.
This is what I’m trying to say. It is speaking to God. If someone forbids unknown tongues then they are forbidding talking to God….And that’s forbidden.

… and forbid not to speak in tongues…

The ability to speak in unknown languages was essential during feast days in Jerusalem when people from all over the known world gathered. It served as a sign not of divine favor, but rather as a judgment for unbelievers (see Isa. 28, 1 Cor. 14:22). It acted as a selective test to distinguish humble, receptive individuals from the "scornful" ones who refused to listen. As described in 1 Cor. 14 and illustrated in Acts 2, the mockers—those who were thoroughly unbelieving—accused the speakers of being drunk or insane. In contrast, those with open hearts sought a deeper understanding and soon heard the clear prophetic message that would convince, convert, and save them.

What about today? While we no longer possess the spiritual gift to speak in unknown tongues, some have used their knowledge of languages, acquired through study, to share the truth in foreign lands.

As time passed and generations advanced, the need for such miraculous gifts faded. The Gospel had spread throughout the known world, and from then on, the focus shifted to nurturing the love of Christ in the hearts of believers.

We live in the days of men's hearts falling them for fear so they seek for signs and wonders.

@David in NJ are you such a believer?

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 1 Cor 13

There is good reason why the possession of the HS ended.

F2F
The cessation of gifts will be at the second coming of Jesus Christ. That is what the end of chapter 13 is talking about when that which is perfect is come. It is also found in 1 Corinthians chapter 1. Confirming the gifts unto the second coming of Jesus Christ. That ye come behind in no gift.

Correction, you do not possess the gift of speaking in unknown tongues. Speak for yourself.

It is nice to see that you are so advanced in modern theology that you do not need miracles from God anymore. You don’t need to touch of the supernatural. Just head knowledge. Congratulations Einstein.

The Holy Spirit has orchestrated this interaction, you with me, on this very subject.

God has already given to us the EXACT time when the gifts cease as given to us in Genesis, Gospel, Acts, 1 Corinthians and Revelation.

These are the Scriptural locations whereby God permanently and precisely declared His giving of the Gifts and His taking away.

It certainly can be!

I have heard messages given in German and Fijian that were subsequently translated for the rest of the English-speaking audience. I know a man who was given a gift of a tongue... and that tongue is Navajo.
YES INDEED and PRAISE GOD and thank you for that UPlifting report = well received.

While that is indeed is a great blessing from God, it is not the Gift of Tongues that we are discussing here.

The specific gift of tongues we are discussing is that which is UNKNOWN to man.

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

It's both/all.

The giving of a message in a language (Fijian) unknown to the one speaking, but known to members of the audience was #3 on the list in the opening post.

The gift of permanently being able to speak a language (Navajo) was #5.
