one thing i still struggle with is cussing, to the point it affects my fiancée and she has "learned" to cuss- oddly enough she seems better at dealing with her emotions since she just lets it all out nowadays rather than letting it cook (which confuses me why the bible advises to keep it in rather?)
anyhow- i struggle to have something to say as reaction to rid this energy that isnt a cussing word
and ive heard saying "jesus christ" is insulting to god as in context of something bad happening

what acceptable replacements for cussing words are there? seems like a very minimal vocabulary... and, is saying "christ" or "jesus christ" in replacement of cussing word insulting god?

James 3:7-8
"7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison."

That isn't to say you should give up. Keep the tongue on a tight leash. Think before you talk. And when in the heat of an argument you sin, know you can ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus.

I think it's a good thing that you are feeling convicted that it's wrong. It's a start. I bet when you used to cuss you did not care either way- but now you see it's a problem. Good.
if you believe that Jesus Christ died as payment for your sins- then pray and ask Him to help you to stop cussing. Confess your sins- all of them and ask Him to help you with everything every day.

if you can't restrain yourself set your mind to Lord Jesus and picture Him hanging there bloody to pay for your sins. the love of that.
Keep your eyes on Him and you wont get so angry at things!

If you want to speak less coarsely and more refined then you need to focus on using new speech patterns and expressions so you don't use the list of bad words.

However...."bad words" are rather arbitrary and subjective. What is a "bad word" in the USA is a "nothing" in the UK or OZ or South Africa....possibly India. But they each have their own list of bad words.

Believe it or not....
Jesus had a mouth on him too....his use of "You brood of vipers" was going to exclude Jesus from the coveted "Rabbi of the Year" award. Then there's the books of Samuel in the Old Testament....a very coarse limerick in spots. Song of Solomon discussing explicit sexual activities also is not for mixed company.

So....
When you use "curse words" are you demeaning someone? Cutting them low? Being vicious with your speech does not require curse words. I can be ugly to others and never once use a curse word. Where some people believe that a fool standing on stage shouting curse words is entertainment....I'm not one of them. I'm a recovering chef and former construction worker. I know plenty "Your Mamma" things to say. (Not gracing this forum with them).

Just try to be kind to people....not get overly upset about the little things. You will find that it will slow down a lot.

They are just words.

What does your heart say though? Do you feel condemned by them?

im not sure if i feel condemned by anything apart from the things of my past i know were sinful.. but that is besides the point, an obese man wont feel condemned by calling himself a true christian while eating mcdonalds 5 times a day, delusion sets the mind free but doesnt free you from the sin, being a sin.

So..... I was in Seoul on a weekend with no business meetings, so I just decided to walk around the streets. There was a concert going on at the stadium, so I sat on a park bench outside to listen. I understand maybe 5 words of Korean, but music is music. Between songs, the singer would go into some kind of an emotion-laden diatribe which I didn't understand until I heard in English, "F***!". More Korean and then "S***!" "G**d**mit!". Shocked, I asked my host the next day about it, and he explained that Korean does NOT have the concept of taboo words, so they use the English ones instead. Cussing - another fine American export.

So, in retrospect, I think declaring by custom that particular English expressions for sexual intercourse or fecal matter or asking the Almighty to condemn something to eternal punishment are taboo IS totally arbitrary.

Isn’t it strange that all languages seem to have the same words for cussing?
Where do these words come from? Analyzing them we see that each one is an insult to God or his creation in one way or another.

Some have to do with the reproductive organs and sexual intercourse….sacred for the transmission of life, but in sin they carry filthy undertones.

Blasphemies such as those relating to God or Christ are particularly offensive.

In my country calling something or someone a “bloody idiot” or something equally demeaning was a slight on the sanctity of blood to God. It used to be a swear word but it’s just part of the lingo now that there are worse words heard everywhere, even by older people who would never have used such language in their younger days in company. We are definitely influenced by the world where bad words are no longer censored…..and entertainment is filled with them.

Others refer to bodily functions that are connected to filth and disease….so who would be the likely source of these expressions? We don’t have to guess, do we?

One Bible verse comes to mind….
Eph 4:29..
“Let a rotten word not come out of your mouth, but only what is good for building up as the need may be, to impart what is beneficial to the hearers.”
That doesn’t mean that the bad words will not come into your mind….but self control is a fruit of God’s spirit and will restrain a person from saying them out loud.
Anger is usually the trigger, so work on that emotion and see if the dampening down of the anger first might help with restraining the tongue. (Titus 3:2)

The people we choose as our companions can also have a negative effect on our speech.
Choose friends who don’t use foul language.

Well the "F" bomb is of British and somewhat Catholic origin.

During Henry VIII reign and subsequently after Bloody Mary Elizabeth's reign the Government was in charge of marriage ceremonies. Because the Catholic devoted priests and monks refused to do anything....plus they were tossed out. The King or Queen was the head of the Church.

So the newlywed couple would hang a royal edict outside their home that stated "Fornication Under Consent of the King".
Basically a marriage license.
The acronym is what is hurled as an epithelial expression today.

The version I heard was that it's an acronym for "For Unlawful Carnel Knowledge". I think both stories are apocryphal.

Well....it was the late 1400's to early 1500's. It's not like it couldn't be said both ways. It might have been. Especially if the four letters in acronym form were used. People forget...have fuzzy memories.

Either way....it's still not great to be so foul mouthed to be offensive to mixed company with small children.

That’s a fun word! Like saying juggling clowns are dancing around in their brown tanned shoes, with balloons, that are releasing now from their hands!

How a person speaks is representative of who they are.

@Zeth4500 brings up an interesting topic.
I do hear some that profess themselves to be Christian taking the name of God in vain - and I'll limit this to just cursing right now -
Putting God in a sentence or a few words that do not edify or give honor to Him is breaking one of the commandments...
just like stealing or killing.

We SHOULD feel condemned by using God's name in vain.

Saying any cuss word is better than putting God's name in there somewhere.

How to get over cursing and/or cussing?

Here's what I read once:
Intelligent persons don't need to cuss.

That did it for me!!
(why be on the other side??)

The word namely GD, is a common representative term for people to suggest a person has used the name of God in vain.

How can that be God's name, when God has a name "Yahavah." I get that people in all different cultures use languages in a certain manner. This one is something that doesn't bother me. Nor does "Jesus Christ!" said out loud bother me either. There is good and bad. You can't never cover up the bad, it is always going to become revealed in time.

Paul suggest "all things are lawful, but not all things edify or provide benefit." Sometimes a certain way a person talks, you may have to use a little bit of his language to speak with him.

So if we pray to the Father as Jesus instructed, are we not addressing YHWY? Don't you think it would be inappropriate to veinly use any name that refers to the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob? Surely God hears us.

Replacements for cussing could be to express what's happening, "I'm so frustrated! I've tried this 5 times, and it still won't work!!" "I feel like I've wasted hours on this!" Hammer hits thumb, you can choose, "OH *******!" or "ow that hurts!!!"

Much love!

You don't ever go DOWN to a person's level...
you always bring him UP to yours.

You're supposed to be an example of what Jesus taught.
In any language, and with any name of God,,,you DO NOT take His name in vain...
WHATEVER that name is.

And you don't think exclaming JESUS CHRIST! is a combination of words that does not bother you?

Next time try exclaiming MUHAMMAD!!

Let's see how long that lasts.

Have you no respect for our Lord?

Are you even Christian - I didn't check.
