Keep working on it with them. You do not want your money mixed with hers in a bank account with her name on it because someone may try to collect your money for her debt. If the bank is slow to remove her name from an account simply withdraw all of your own money from the joint account so that nobody is able to touch that. Then deposit your money in an account which is only in your name. If necessary open a new account with only your name on it.
Just an update. I have an appointment at the bank on the 11th to take in the death certificate.

I did send in a form to Social Security to get three weeks back for June.

Another doctor bill came yesterday. It's a smaller one. So will have to phone them about mom's death and see what they say. The bigger hospital deductible bills are more concerning.

Thanks for the update. You should not be responsible for what Medicare and any other insurance do not pay. Only her estate might be liable, if she had an estate.

She didn't have an estate. She got $1184 Social Security plus a $64 pension per month.

But I put her on my checking account jointly in case I died first....so she could get money right away. That's the account I'm seeing about on the 11th, to get her off of it.

I understand why you had the joint account. Simply don't pay any more of her bills using your money or your credit cards.

He's back on. He just posted this morning in a different thread. He seems in good spirits, but I haven't asked about his health.

Tomorrow another payment is due on the payment plan I set up for mom's 2022 hospital bill...hospital had sent bill to the wrong address and only notified us this year about it.

I am hoping when I set up the payment plan for mom...that the woman didn't make it as my debt. (I can't afford to get a black mark on my credit score in case I need to get an apartment out of State in the future.)

One time I asked a woman at that hospital if mom died what would happen....she said I would be responsible. I think she's wrong...will try to speak to a manager.

I never signed anything about being a guarantor for mom's hospital bill in 2022 or 2024.

I would not pay the payment and let them contact you on it. As long as you did not pay off her bill on your own credit card or take out a loan in your own name to pay it off, I do not believe you are legally liable. If they believe you are liable they certainly will contact you.

I think that she is wrong as well.

The two payments I made already for mom I did put on my credit card. (Mom didn't have a credit card.). The lady at the hospital said they would only take a credit or debit card.

That money you paid is gone. So long as you don't pay anything else the only thing her creditors might get would be from her bank account or from her estate. If she had no estate then they have to write it off.

I know the two payments I made are gone, that's fine.

I just hope because I put her payments on my credit card that they won't try to hold me liable for that debt. I guess I have to tell them I never signed anything if they try to do that.

My credit is good. If I ever need to get a cheaper apartment outside of California, I need a good credit rating.

@Debp I haven't been to active, been a bit busy. I couldn't keep up with the conversation you all were discussing. Do you have a link to where the conversation is being placed?

Just click on the link above in the first quote. It will take you right there. You probably don't want to read everything but look at my post #19.... made today July 10.

Hi, nice to "see" you.

It's been hot here for a couple of weeks.

Still finishing up with some red tape stuff at a bank where mom's check would go. Need to go back this week as they need to make an appointment for me. @amadeus I did get mom off of the other account where my check goes.

Also, the city is inspecting our entire apartment building on Wednesday and Thursday so need to be home for that.

Good morning people, not sure I'm awake yet, had some coffee. It's still early so...

Been warm weather here. Not too bad or too comfortable. Early morning hours and late night hours are more comfortable. Hope everyone is doing well. Cheers!
