The soul is dead when all life ceases! That's why Christ tells believers we need have no fear of being killed physically. Because through Him we have eternal spiritual life by His Spirit in us. Even though our body can be killed, man is not able to destroy our living (spirit) soul. Because when our body dies the spirit in man returns to God in heaven alive a spirit soul. That's how John sees living souls (spirit) in heaven after saints have been martyred for their faith.

Matthew 10:28 (KJV) And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

There will be a Resurrection of the dead in Christ at His Second Coming = bodies will rise from the dust of the earth.

Daniel 12:1-3

It is the spirits of just men made perfect that return with Christ. The permanent home for faithful saints is NOT heaven, but the new earth. The spirits of these just men returning from heaven with the Lord, being spirit, have no physical body, which shall be for the new earth. What would be the purpose for a new earth if there are no immortal and incorruptible (physical) human beings to inhabit it? The answer is that there will be immortal, incorruptible, complete human beings to inhabit the new earth, because when the last trumpet sounds the dust that makes the body will be resurrected and changed from mortal to immortal and corruptible to incorruptible. There would be no reason for the resurrection of their body from the dust without having an eternal spirit which gives the body life. That's why the spirits of just men made perfect return with Christ, so they can be reunited with an immortal, incorruptible human body, resurrected to life again.

The Bible tells only that believers shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. We will be with the Lord in the air (wherever that may be) only until the wrath of God by fire has been poured out upon the whole earth. When the first heaven and earth have passed away, there will be a new heaven and new earth that comes down from heaven "the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband."
