I'm surprised they didn't call Jesus vile names. Why didn't they?
They knew He was God and had power over them.

Luke 9:1
And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases.

Matt 8:29
What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?"

Mark 5:7
"What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!"

Luke 10:17-18
The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." 18 And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.

2 Peter 2:4
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

Matthew 25:41
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

It's only a guess but I imagine the sole purpose of a demon using bad language would be to provoke. Perhaps demons realized that would be an exercise in vanity with Jesus. The demons would more likely spend their time stirring up nastiness in the presence of flawed men, whose pride could be stirred up and tempted to become like-minded--proud and nasty.

It could also be simply because Jesus didn't let them be vulgar in his presence at particular times. God the Father guided every aspect of Jesus' life, as he pursued the plan of redemption for man. Dealing with vulgarity may not have been the mission at times.

I believe because they knew that they were outmatched and powerless before him. That is, why provoke his wrath. I believe that they were way too fearful, that they would rather elicit mercy from Jesus, than punishment, or what they actually deserved.

Matthew 8:29-29
8:29. And they cried out, saying, "What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?"

Matthew 8:31-31
8:31. The demons began to entreat Him, saying, "If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of swine."

I looked on YouTube and, I don't remember who it was, but they said that demons are compelled to confess when in the presence of Jesus. Then he mentioned how it says in the bible that EVERYONE will, one day, confess that Jesus is lord, or something to that effect. It seemed to make sense to me. Perhaps another learned poster can make better sense of it.

My wife had a pentecostal friend who said she had a vision some years ago. A demon--fierce looking--was in a cage and powerless to do anything outside of his cage. Perhaps that's how it is when demons were around Jesus. They could be vulgar, but had to confine their vulgarities to the cage of God's will when they were around Jesus. Just a thought...

Mocking and appealing to fanatical or power hungry mindsets is a damaging if not more than outright denial.

I've been thinking about this recently. Remember the spirit in Acts 16:16-18

Was this an evil spirit, I think so, as it was doing divination. No spirit that comes from God would allow itself to be used for an ungodly purpose.

So then the question remains as to their motivations.

1. They wanted Jesus to be exposed as the messiah and killed, because they did not know the plan for salvation and expected that to further their cause. (however this doesn't explain the example in Acts)
2. They were trying to score points with God, in hope they will reap some reward.
3. They know they are condemned and were trying to detract from God's Glory by doing something for God, then when he punishes them they can point to something good they have done.

Yes, interesting.

Acts 16:16-18
New International Version

Paul and Silas in Prison
16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
