We see this passage in Revelation..
Revelation 2:15
So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate.

No one seems to know what was the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes as it comes up in Revelation and have drawn a great deal of attention and questions, because little is known about the group and its doctrine.

We are given some detail in the beginning of Revelation 2 on the church of Ephesus and its works..
2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.

But why the deeds of the Nicolaitanes were hated by God and their exact teachings is not explicitly detailed in the Bible, leading to some uncertainty. So who were the Nicolaitanes and why were they and their doctrine hated by God.

There seems to be a lot of ideas, but not much clear outline of their doctrine..

As we have no historical facts concerning the people or the doctrine, we can look at the name and get a clue.

Nicolaitenes is formed from 2 root words nico and lait.

nico means ruler or rule and lait means people. It was about the time John wrote the revelation that we see the birth ands growth of a clergy class that ruled over the people. I am not talking of pastoral authority but of leadership being a class unto themselves.

Today this type of rule i sfound in such sects as

MOrmons
JW's
Episcopalians
Roman Catholics
