What does the word "Christ" mean to you?

What I was asking was this: Since He IS "the anointed High Priest, King and Prince, the Son of God," as you say, how will that play out in "future history?" How do you see the prophecies about Him in each role play out? If we don't think about His presence as "High Priest," for instance, those are just empty words, GOOD words ... but just words. Does He still have a task to perform in that role or would He say, "Well, that's accomplished; time to move on to the next task"? All right. Yeshua has always been the Son of God since his beginning, no need to further elaborate on that. When Yeshua came, I believe he was our Prince at that time, but upon his ascending to Heaven he became King and High Priest, but not yet given the kingdom, he is a King in waiting. Yeshua receives his kingdom when he is brought before the Ancient of days (Daniel 7:13) which occurs at the 7th trumpet (Revelation 12:10). Now you may not agree with me, but the 7th trumpet is the 3rd woe, but Revelation seems to be quiet on what exactly that 3rd woe is, until you do a word search for the word "woe". The only woe mentioned that is not tied to a trumpet is the casting out of Satan as depicted in Revelation 12:12. We know the 5th and 6th trumpet are the 1st and 2nd woes, the last time the word "woe" is ever mentioned in Revelation is in Revelation 12:12 when Satan comes down to us which must also tie in with his being cast out in Revelation 12:9. So, if Yeshua takes control of the kingdom at the same time Satan is being cast down, then this means Yeshua is given the kingdom and officially made King before the last 3.5 years of the entire 7 year tribulation, which is known as the Great Tribulation, even starts. He was not officially made King during the first 3.5 years. I believe he was made High Priest as well when he ascended, but like his role as King, he is in waiting until he is officially given it by the Ancient of days. He uses Satan against his people as a means of purifying and testing them, just like what was done to Job. Those who refuse to comply with the Beast will be rewarded like Job was rewarded. Only difference I see, is that many will be martyred, where Job wasn't, though he might have been in a spiritual sense. After the tribulation is when the 7 vials are poured out on the wicked, and then the 1000 years start. Which starts off with burying the dead from the Gog/Magog war of Ezekiel 39. The 1/6 of the army that was allowed to live (Ezekiel 39:2 which says in the KJV, but not in the ESV: "And I will turn thee back , and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:) are the same as those in Daniel 7:12 who will again surround the holy city at the end of the 1000 years. They are reserved for a specific season and time, which is when Satan comes out to deceive the nations once more, which is the Gog/Magog war of Ezekiel 38. This ties in with 1 Corinthians 15:22-28, when Yeshua will reign until all enemies are put under his feet at which point he hands the kingdom back to God.

Okay, it's been a full week; so, I'm ready to move on.

I've gotta say that I'm a bit disappointed by the response ... but I'm not too surprised. Those who know that it's a big deal what one believes about "Christ" think I'm being simplistic, fishing for the newbies, and those who don't know how big a deal it is, don't care. "You don't know that you don't know what you don't know."

But, it IS a big deal! The BIGGEST DEAL! The word "Christ" or the Greek transliterated "Christos" is the same title as "Messiah" or the Hebrew transliterated as "Mashiach." Both titles in Greek and Hebrew mean "Anointed."

But, what does "Anointed" mean? Well, there's the process, the meaning, and how it pans out: Simply put, the word means "rubbed" or "painted." The process itself is to take a handful of thickened oil, thickened by the apothecary, in one's cupped hand and to smear it upon the "anointed" one, rubbing into his hair, much as we would shampoo today. Entailed in this process is the composition of the oil:

Exodus 28:40-41
40 And for Aaron's sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty.
41 And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.

30 And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

So, obviously, the first ones so "anointed" were Aharown (the Greek spelling transliterated is "Aaroon," "oo" being the omega, pronounced "ah-ah-RONE," which is similar to how the name is pronounced in Hebrew) the first High Priest and his sons, who were priests after him, and they were so anointed by Mosheh (Moses).

A beautiful word picture of this process in found in Psalm 133:

1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

Now, who were so anointed? Well, the priests obviously were anointed, as described above, but so was at least one prophet:

1 Kings 19:8-18
8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

And then, of course, several kings were so anointed, most of the time, kings of Y'hudah and Isra'el, but some who were foreign kings as above:

The most important of the kings of the united Kingdom were Sha'uwl (Saul), David, and Smo (Solomon):

By way of background, 1 Samu'el chapter 8 is extremely important because it shows the nature of the Kingdom of Isra'el:

1 Samuel 8:1-22
1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.

20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

So, in the next two chapters, we see him anoint Sha'uwl:

18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.
19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?
21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.
23 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.
24 And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.
10:1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

Then, Samu'el later anoints David after Sha'uwl turns out to be a disappointment, getting too big for his britches:

1 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4 And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Years later, in making David their king, the tribe of Y'hudah or Judah anointed him a second time:

2 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.
3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.

After seven and a half years of struggle with the house of Sha'uwl and his supporters, David was finally anointed a third time as king over all Isra'el:

2 Samuel 5:1-5
1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.
2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel.
4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.
5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
10 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11 Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.

Although Smo built the first Temple, he also allowed the women in his life to turn away His heart from God to idols. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines, after all (1 Kings 11:3)! He was "outnumbered" (by choice)! Therefore, by design, God split the kingdom in his son's reign, R'chav`aam's (Rehoboam's) reign. Although Y'hudah anointed him, the rest of Isra'el went home when he answered them harshly and told them that he would not reduce the taxes that Smo put on the people but would increase them instead (1 Kings 12:13-16).

Nevertheless, each son of the past king was anointed to be the next king over the Southern Kingdom of Y'hudah. The Northern Kingdom of the rest of Isra'el made their own kings, and through assassinations and intrigue, several dynasties passed in the Northern Kingdom. Their greatest kings in power were `Omriy (Omri) and Yehu (Jehu). But, none of the kings of the Northern Kingdom were declared "they did right in the sight of God." Still, they were all one dynasty - the legacy of David the King.

All of these kings were anointed for the position of king, God's captain over His people. That means that each and every one of them who were anointed were called "mashiach" in his turn, the "anointed" of God. They were all "messiahs." Using the Hebrew to Greek translations, that means they each could be called "christos" in his turn. They were all "christs!" Thus, the term "christ" is FULL of meaning, and it is NOT exclusive to "Yeshua` haMashiach" or "Jesus the Christ!" That's my first point in all of this: Calling Jesus "the Christ" is NOT unique! The purpose He was anointed for is stated in Matthew 26:12 & Mark 14:8:[sup] [/sup]

So this tells me that Yeshua needed to be annointed for his burial, not only for the Messianic office, but also for the powers he would need to raise himself from the dead, for without that power he would not be able to gift us with the Holy Spirit. What do you think?

Okay, there are two things I think: First, He was called the "Christ" long before the lady anointed Him for His burial. So, I believe that His Anointing came before her arrival with the spikenard-perfumed ointment. Her mission was to offer Him her thanks, her love, and her honor. In doing so and without realizing what would happen in the middle of the next week (namely His death and burial), she ended up doing the service as part of their burial ritual. (It must have been odd for the Romans who crucified Him, nailing His feet to the cross, to smell the perfume already on his feet! "Hey, Brutus, what's that smell?" "It smells like perfume, but where's it coming from?" "<Sniff, sniff.> I think it's coming from this guy's FEET!" "<Sniff.> Yeah! It smell like His feet were DUNKED in the stuff!")

One reference is in Mark 1:15 Jesus said, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.
This takes place right after Jesus returns being lead into the wilderness for 40 days. Baptized by John, receives the Spirit, lead into the wilderness and upon returning announces the time has been fulfilled. What time?

For you Danial week watchers I can find no other "Time Fulfilled" Jesus could be referring to except the coming of the Christ of Messiah found in
Danial 9:25
“Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;

True, but most did not even recognize him, as the scriptures say "......thou knewest not the time of thy visitation." and "He came unto his own, and his own received him not" anymore then they will in the end days.

The only other instance that could be interpreted as an anointing would be his baptism. There was no literal oil used. The oil in this case would be the Holy Spirit of which "oil" is symbolic for the Holy Spirit. In Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22 and John 1:32 it is said the H.S. descended on Yeshua. In Acts, the Holy Spirit sets upon the people and then fills them, which is not the same as descend in Yeshua's case. To "set" in the context of this passage means to:
1) to make to sit down
a) to set, appoint, to confer a kingdom on one

The Holy Spirit "set" upon these people to confer a future kingdom to them in which they would sit upon thrones. There is a post on here about Michael being the "one like the Son of man" which I disagree is speaking of Michael. I had typed up a comment and saved it to my folder in case they replied back that the only other possibility for who the "one like the Son of man" could be, if not Yeshua, would be those who overcame in the churches and were born from above. They would, in like manner, be anointed. They would be the ones brought before the Ancient of days to be given the kingdom. They are "like" the Son of man, because they are in his image.

I prefer the "statement" the time has been fulfilled, rather than your ambiguous actions reference.

I think you are absolutely right about when the Messiah was so anointed, "when the Spirit descended upon Him." To me, it's reminiscient of David's anointing:

Christ is anointed to be king. The 69 weeks run from the command given to Nehemiah for rebuilding the city up to the triumphal entry when Jesus publicly claimed by his actions to be the King Messiah. This works out to the day, so there is no need to look elsewhere for fulfilments that don't quite match the prophesied time.

Yes, Christ is anointed to be King; however, I don't believe the second half. It is a common myth, but the only such calculation I've seen for saying that it "works out to the day" is when one uses the mythological "360-day prophetic year." A year is a year. If one would use a 360-day year, then each year would lose 5.2422 days! That accumulates quickly! In only six years, one has lost a whole month! Now, you're celebrating "Christmas" at the time of our "Thanksgiving!" Six more years, and one would be celebrating "Christmas" before "Hallowe'en" and "All Saints Day!" Very soon, one would be off whole seasons! Jewish time-keeping uses a lunar cycle of 29.5 days per cycle. That gives them alternating 29-day months and 30-day months, but that is six days SHORT of 360 days. Furthermore, 12 months do not always make a year in Jewish time-keeping. Occasionally, usually at least once in 7 years, they will throw in an additional Adar month as a "leap month," sometimes two! This is PRECISELY because their lunar-cycle months do not keep apace with their solar years! And, they ARE solar years because they are based on the growing cycle of their crops in the northern hemisphere.

Can you provide documented evidence that this "to the day" is true? I've always been interested in calendars and time-keeping, everything from perpetual calendars to leap days, century calculations, leap seconds, and the variations in calendars, such as the Persian calendar.

You're welcome! And, I agree with you ... up to a point. I believe that you are right about Dani'el 9:25 and Mark 1:15; however, you have neglected Dani'el 9:26-7 and how those verses were fulfilled in the B'rit Chadashah (the NT).

It's always best (IMO) to see a whole context; so, I find it hard to use a portion of a passage in quoting the passage. I especially don't like quoting single words, terms, or phrases. I will frequently quote as much as it takes to end a sentence and a thought. This passage from Dani'el is also GREATLY abused and misunderstood, which is all the more reason to see it all together. Also, quoting from a passage will often require one to view the passage in the original language, in this case Hebrew. I do NOT like quoting from modern versions for this passage because their means of interpretation and translation leave much to subjectivity and the opinion of the translator.

As much as people disdain the KJV today, it was still one of the best word-for-word translations over the last 400 years. Furthermore, it KEEPS the extra information of case and number in the various forms of the second person pronoun. The "thee's" and "thou's" are singular, the "ye's" and "you's" are plural. The subjective case is "thou" as in "thou shalt not steal" and "ye" as in "ye shall not surely die." The objective case is "thee" as in "I will bless thee" and "you" as in "I will take you to me for a people." "Thy" and "thine" are possessive pronouns, the first treated as an adjective, the second treated as a noun, just as we do today with the plural forms, "your" and "yours" (which we treat as common for both singular and plural).

Daniel 9:24-27
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

In verse 27, Yeshua fulfilled the "he shall make it desolate" portion in Matthew 23:38:

38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

He also put a gap of time between the first sixty-nine and a half Sevens and the last half of the seventieth Seven with His words, "Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say...." As they rejected Him from being their King, He moved on to being their Sacrifice and their Priest, which was His mission all along for the First Coming or the First Advent.

However, His mission of being their King was merely POSTPONED, not deferred or recommissioned to others. There will be a Second Coming or a Second Advent in which He WILL fulfill his role of being their King! The second half of the seventieth Seven will not continue until the Messiah returns. This seventieth Seven has NOTHING directly to do with the "tribulation."

So, when will He return? He will return when the Jews of Jerusalem say, "Baruwk haba' b'shem YHWH." Which although it was translated as "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the LORD," actually translates from the Hebrew as "Welcome, Comer in the authority of YHWH. We have welcomed you from the House of YHWH," implying that there will have to BE a "House of YHWH" or a Temple.

I didn't mean to take your thread off topic but I seen the opportunity to revel a simple truth about the timing of the coming of the Messiah, in relationship to Danials 70 weeks. This forum is littered with 500 word explanations about the same topic "7 year trib" Danial's 70 week ect" IMO that doesn't cast a clear light on the simple truth of the matter. But rather deters people from stepping back and looking at the rather large hole in the 7 year trib teaching.

If the Messiah came during the baptism of the HS then that marks the beginning of the 70th week. Cut off in the midst of the week = Jesus on the cross 3.5 years after the Messiah came. I'm still out on the second half being postponed, but I do know as Gabriel told Danial 70 week are appointed for you and your people "the Jews". The Gospel was only offered to the Jewish nation even after Christ crucifiction, Not until Peter was told to go to Cornelius was the gospel offered to anyone but Jews. Whether that was 7 years from the anointing of Jesus or 3.5 years after the crucifiction I can't be sure Acts doesn't record the date of Peters visit to Cornelius. But there is an argument to be made for this as well.

It's not that far off topic, and I rather enjoy it. You're welcome for the thoughtful conversation and thank you, too, for it takes two (at least) to make it a "conversation."

Actually, I believe that the first 1/2 of the 70th Seven was fulfilled in the "ministry" of our Lord Yeshua`s First Advent. He offered them the Kingdom, but they refused to accept His offer. Nothing takes God by surprise, and I believe that He knew that they would reject Him and thus the prophecy in Dani'el 9 ends the way it does. Instead, God turned it around to be the Sacrifice for sin needed and Yeshua` fulfilled His role as the High Priest forever after the order of Malkhiy-Tsedeq.

However, the second 1/2 of the 70th Seven was postponed as the people who were supposed to accept Him learn to welcome Yeshua` as the Messiah of God. When they can fulfill Matthew 23:39, then He will return and complete the Seven. This time when He offers Himself as their King, they will jump at the opportunity!

That's how I view prophecy.
