Exodus 33:21-23
And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”
I post a lot regarding Time, or rather the lack thereof. Perhaps this would be better placed in the prophecy threads, and yet it is a Bible study. Remembering then that God has confused all language (including the scriptures) and made their full understanding unattainable except by spiritual discernment--that is until the sounding of the seventh angel and the promise of being lead unto all truth...this is the understanding of the above passage regarding what God actually showed Moses. Keep in mind that Moses authored the first five books of the Bible, aka., the Pentateuch.

There is lots of detail in the first five books of the Bible, and this passage is a synopsis. It is my intention to be brief, as follows:
  • The "place" referred to in the passage, is the world--all of it.
  • The "rock" is Christ.
  • The "cleft" defines the "place" as being "in Christ."
  • "My hand" is Christ, aka., the "Son of God."
  • "My back" refers to the "image" nature of the creation of man and this "place." Meaning two things: 1) Everything is like the image in a mirror--appearing as a reflection, even somewhat backwards or inverted; and 2) What God showed Moses is not a view forward, but "back"...as in "before the foundation of the world."
God, basically broke down all that had occurred and would occur before the world began and during those first days of their revelation lived and walked out by the sons of Adam. He then put the words "in his mouth" to guide the children of Israel out of Egypt unto the promised land--which is to say, heaven, and included prophecies by commandment and by word for the times to come.

But the main point to be understood, is that what God showed Moses is what occurred before the foundation of the world-- His "back" [story], but "not" beyond the world--that is...not what is in front, not His "face." Meaning that "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” And that is the word of confirmation.

In other words, although there are thousands of passages of scripture that this effects, it all begins with the understanding that all of scripture is what happened before the world began and is revealed during the times of it. Indeed, time will tell.

What did God show Moses?

His character ie, what his nature consists of. Jesus showed us the same. It is his character which is to give us confidence to not live in fear.

It is character which allows and enables us to go into relationship with him.

A cognitive knowledge of God does not generate relationship any more than a cognitive knowledge of the President generates a relationship. The devil has a cognitive knowledge of God better than any of us. You can work out the nature of that relationship.

That certainly is part of it.
