"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me!" How many times have you heard that absolute FALSE statement? Did your parents ever teach you that? If they did, they should have continued by teaching you: Two plus two equals five because that is equally as false.
The story of David and Goliath is found in I Samuel 17. Its great reading with many points of learning for all of us. As you read, you'll see Goliath was very vocal. In all of his words against David and Israel, what all did you think Goliath said?
Speaking of words, let's move forward to today. Where in the world did this idea of having to make some sort exclamation when something unexpectedly happens become common place? It never was that way when I was growing up! Why say anything? Have you ever been one of the first to arrive on the scene of a collision? (By the way, it is a "collision and NOT an "accident"!) Were you there when the police and ambulance showed up? Did the officer(s) or ambulance personnel constantly say "Oh my God???" When you went to the doctor, did he or she make some exclamation while looking at your test results? Of course not. These people are professionals and conduct themselves like adults rather than saying "Oh my God" every five seconds like so many immature people do.
Whether we like it or not, we are NOT to be taking the name of our Lord in vain and that includes the utterances I quoted above as well as repeating "God", "Lord" or "Father" every other sentence in prayer which is vain repetition.
Probably most of us don't do these things but why tolerate it? If you see it on TV, turn it off! If somebody else put that program on, walk away! If you're in a group and it happens, why not just walk away? Why give approval to this garbage by participating. I remember sitting in a high school auditorium prior to a performance when three high school girls sitting a few seats away couldn't carry on a conversation without taking His name in vain every five seconds. I asked them to stop because it was disrespectful and much to my surprise, they did!
Have you ever wondered why the phrase isn't "Oh my Budda"? How about "Oh my Allah"? Its because Satan knows who God is and these other guys are NOT God. As such, Satan could care less if you say "Oh my Allah"! Satan has put the phrase "Oh My God" into "modern" society so YOU can help Satan with his plan to steal, kill and destroy. Why go along with Satan?
My friends, as we society circling the drain, it is up to us to also see what vocabulary and practices which were always considered wrong are now considered right. Consequently, it is up to us to "filter" these things thru our knowledge of God's Word using DISCERNMENT and taking a stand for what is RIGHT.
