When I first got diagnosed perhaps twenty years ago I was told to eat lots of carbs so I started eating crisps (chips?) between meals and got so that I would eat three or four packets at once and not be hungry for my proper meals and so would just snack some more. I couldn't settle down with a book without something to nibble on. After I prayed about this I was admitted to hospital twice during the summer with suspected strokes and during that time, because my blood sugar levels were high a nurse from the diabetic unit came to chat with me and told me that even if I wasn't eating much sugar as such because I was constantly snacking my pancreas needed to work harder to deal with those carbs. I thought I must have got it wrong about being advised to eat a lot of carbs until I read the exact same thing in a book I bought about managing diabetes, the authors husband had been told exactly the same thing. My desire to snack has completely left me and I give God the glory for that. I definitely didn't do it on my own as it happened almost overnight - so fast.I like hearing healing stories. Can you explain more about not snacking. I would like to learn your breakthru.
@Pearl Sounds like you have successfully changed your diet well. I have to some extent; but then again, Christmas is coming up, right....?When I first got diagnosed perhaps twenty years ago I was told to eat lots of carbs so I started eating crisps (chips?) between meals and got so that I would eat three or four packets at once and not be hungry for my proper meals and so would just snack some more. I thought I would have to change my diet but I haven't really, I've just cut out the snacking with God's help but still eat my favourite meals. We are out to a family lunch next Friday - Christmas eve - as it is my grandaughter's birthday and I will probably enjoy a dessert. (I've been wondering why places that cater for vegetarians and vegans don't also cater for diabetics with fresh fruit or cheeseboards) And on Christmas day we will be at one of my daughters homes for lunch and so I will allow myself a small helping of dessert there too.@Pearl Sounds like you have successfully changed your diet well. @Pearl I'm sure there's a lot of truth to what you say about snacking. (I find that on a journey, it's hard not to snack...)I thought I would have to change my diet but I haven't really, I've just cut out the snacking with God's help but still eat my favourite meals. Thanks. I never really liked sour kraut, but it's good for the gut health. Sooooo ...I am acquiring a taste for it. lol I have added in some chopped cucumbers and black olives and that helps. lolThat sounds delish!
I couldn't pick up a book unless I had a snack to go with it and as I read a lot that was a lot of snacking. It had become a habit or even an eating disorder but I am healed of it now thanks to our loving Father.@Pearl I'm sure there's a lot of truth to what you say about snacking. yeah I would skip the kraut, but the rest sounds like a good dish to meThanks. I never really liked sour kraut, but it's good for the gut health. Sooooo ...I am acquiring a taste for it. lol I have added in some chopped cucumbers and black olives and that helps. lol
For this reason, many have overcome diabetes on a low-carb or ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. That means, eating 2 very healthy low carb or keto meals in a 4-hr window, and fasting the rest of the time ... or simply having 3 meals (low carb or keto) with no snacks between. Tea or coffee in between meals or sipping bone broth is okay as long as there is no milk or sugar in them. (Instead, use stevia, erythritol, xylitol, or monk fruit for sweetening ...and some straight cream which has no sugars in it.)When I first got diagnosed perhaps twenty years ago I was told to eat lots of carbs so I started eating crisps (chips?) between meals and got so that I would eat three or four packets at once and not be hungry for my proper meals and so would just snack some more. I happen to like some pasture raised organic bacon on my grilled cheese too. lolyeah I would skip the kraut, but the rest sounds like a good dish to me
I was told just the opposite 6 months ago. Perhaps doctors have changed their view. But I was advised to have small portions of rice and carbs as it is similar to sugar. But now I understand. If I eat a cup of rice I get flush and it is definitely like eating sugar. Not sure about chips though, but it must be if it worked for you that way. When I first got diagnosed perhaps twenty years ago I was told to eat lots of carbs so I started eating crisps (chips?) between meals and got so that I would eat three or four packets at once and not be hungry for my proper meals and so would just snack some more. I haven't eaten chips/crisps for six months and don't miss them.I was told just the opposite 6 months ago. Perhaps doctors have changed their view. I've been eating them as part of my diet, I'll check into that and see if my blood sugar is high. I have cysctic fibrosis and am on meds for it so it might drop as a result. Not too sure if I can just eat as I want now, I don't think so as if I eat too much sugar I crash.I haven't eaten chips/crisps for six months and don't miss them.
Not to eat snacks is sometimes harder to do than to say....I've been eating them as part of my diet, I'll check into that and see if my blood sugar is high. Well, I like mushrooms on pizza....but then there are then the pizza carbohydrates....That sounds good. I like sauteed mushrooms. Maybe I'll try one with mushrooms and bacon.
