What Are Basic Skills Every Adult Should Have?

I see lacking social skills as a big problem today.

Interview skills fall under that category.

It is hard for me to start a conversation with those I do not know. I feel awkward but do try to take a deep breath and trust The Lord to not let me say anything stupid, lol.

It's really good to ask them about themselves and what they like to do. It's like a social cheat code.

If an adult knows how to love every need is covered.

Young people have not been taught how to get their laughing matter around the problems that they will face because if can get their laughing matter around the problem then they will not have problems to face.

Generally, people have not been shown how to analyse the problems that they will face or how to future proof their lives such that they will be happy and content.

Critical analysis skills are an absolute must and sorely lacking.

For example most people today can't identify the types of propaganda or its purposes and how that is distinctly different from true news and information. Many have issues with understanding what news actually means or the importance of what they are hearing when they do hear or read it.

For example when people start talking in favor of socialism or pure democracy they have no idea how bad these things truly are. Mob rule or zero freedom are both equally bad. But today we have people marching in protest for both.

Then there's the personal critical analysis: How to analyze yourself and then subsequently others. This is a crucial skill necessary to form relationships.

People keep repeating the old lie: "Power corrupts" instead of the truth which is that Power attracts the corrupted and corruptible.
And a critical analysis clears this axiom to fiction so that you can know the truth.

Did learn very early…(not from discussion) rather from observing in our household.

* No handouts.
* Want something…must work to gain, needs, wants.

* Did very early learn…
Be thankful and care for; not complain, happily share….provisions, as provided which were meager, home, food, clothing, toys, etc.

* Did very early (age 10-11)…needs, wants, required money, and none would be given from parents…so began scrounging for discarded pop bottles, turn in to neighborhood store for deposit, pulling weeds from flower beds for neighbors for 10 - 25 cents…taking laundry off lines, folding, ironing….washing cars…etc.

* Did ‘not’ learn about the bigger spectrum of Finances…. Of making more money than needed to purchase needs/wants…as “to save”. Nor learned as a youngster HOW to, use money to purchase something, for the purchase itself to make money.

* IOW…it was always as a kid…only make enough money for what I needed or wanted.

* By age 15, most siblings had moved out…I had a tiny bedroom to myself…worked the entire summer, bought paint, two window shades, curtains, a bed, mattress, small raw wood desk, book case to set atop the desk, chair, dresser, (painted them), bought a room size “carpet”, cut to fit…underwear and 5 sets of “new” clothing for the school year, and a coat and gloves and shoes…and seriously thought “while happy” and appreciative was somewhat feeling undeservedly spoiled, having at that age, what my siblings had not.

I did continue to work on week-ends, for the same things..needs, wants…movie theater, skating rink, a “transistor radio”….whoopie!
Did learn, not to borrow, not to lend items, rather land a hand and give away items if no longer my need.
Did learn…”skill” of make do and be thankful
Yet still…saving, nope….Purchasing something to make money…nope.
Wish I had been taught those lessons earlier.

It might have been helpful to have acquired some "do it yourself" skills around the house while I was growing up.

Every male should learn a skill that will keep him employed for life and even to fall back on if another job doesn't work out. Every male should have cooking skills, laundry skills, and basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Otherwise, you'll be at the mercy of paying someone else, who most likely, will rip you off.
