There is no try when it comes to overcoming sin, for if one wills to try harder, they have already been defeated…. The reason being, that trying to overcome sin, is not trusting Christ to overcome sin…. For when one try’s to overcome sin, it is with the hope that one can overcome sin… This is the hope that needs to be brought to an end, this inner will that says, ‘if maybe, if I just try a little harder I can overcome’…. It is this will that needs to be brought to the end of itself, for when one has no hope in themselves to overcome, it is then that the trying of self has come to and end, and faith and hope in God to do for one what one can not do for oneself is all that one has left… It is in this emptiness, in this humbling of oneself before God that will see the fruit of walking in newness of life, which life walks in the overcoming of sin….

Then one will discover that there is always a deeper sin, a deeper selfishness, a deeper own will that needs to be overcome…. For then will it be realized by experience, that to the degree one walks in this humble emptiness before God, trusting Him to be good to His word where it says, ‘it is no longer I that live but Christ that lives in me’, will this heart rejoice in the experiencing of this walking in newness of life that is its by birthright….

Blessed is the heart, blessed is the life, that allows itself to be brought so low that it can be brought so high…

Absolutely true as long as we don't interpret this as okay to remain in sinful lifestyle, for we know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9). If we don't see God working repentance in us, we need to humble ourselves more before God petitioning Him to work within us.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8 KJV)

I love almost everything you post but I have to disagree.

I don't think you can overcome sin on your own. But I do have to try in order to get anywhere. I have to use my will in order to cut out the coveting, pornography, adulterous thoughts, and other sins.

I have to take things captive at the thought level.

The Holy Spirit is our help and guides us into all truth. But He cannot live out that truth for us. That just hasn't been my experience.

Wynona,
I have found that the less we try the more victory over those sins we have. I did not stop trying to smoke pot, The Holy Spirit removed the desire to smoke pot from me, I did not try and stop drinking the Holy Spirit took the desire to drink from me. What trying does though is has us reach the point where we realize we are powerless to overcome and then can surrender to the work of the holy Spirit in us. This is the Romans 7 Christian who is trying and fighting sin. It is not a bad thing but the next step to that is the Romans 8 Christian who is trusting that God will finish the work he has started in us by our salvation.

Trying to fight sin is like fighting gravity (To use watchman Nee's analogy). Let's say you hold a book up in the air with one arm, eventually your arm will grow tired and you will drop the book. Not trying is like using helium balloons to lift that book up, That is what walking in the Spirit is like, you then learn to walk from victory to victory only yielding yourself to the ne w law of the Spirit of life.

I believe the Holy Spirit still can and does remove major sin patterns and addictions. But is this true for every sin in every believer's life?

The Holy Spirit inhabits us but it doesn't make our decisions for us.

@Wynona According to Romans 8.9, every true believer has the Holy Spirit indwelling.

For me, personally, I don't look at sin as something I can overcome on my own power. Right now we are in a world that is laden with sin and we're constantly tempted by the flesh to stumble. I rely on the Holy Spirit to help me because without Him, I can do nothing.

It is also so important to guard our eyes and ears. I know, for myself, one behavior I wanted to put an end to early on in my walk (years ago) was using the Lord's name in vain. It took a while, but I sought God to correct me immediately, bring it to my attention Lord so I can repent. I can't tell you how long it had been since I said "GD" but about a week ago, I hit my leg on the sharp corner of an object and it hurt REALLY bad. Before I knew what I was doing, I shouted "GD!" and then stood there in shock. I was amazed that actually came out of my mouth and of course, repented. I then sought God as to why I had done that and He reminded me of some recent videos I had been watching on YouTube. I liked the content creator, it wasn't Christian but it wasn't anything disturbing and the creator was a genuinely good guy; however, every so often, he'd drop a GD. It bothered me to hear it, but because I didn't turn away from that immediately, it worked it's way back into my vocabulary in the moment of weakness. If something troubles us in the spirit, we need to be quick to turn away from it even if it's something we enjoy.

Thank you for your message!

Hi, and blessings, a more careful reading of the OP will find what your understanding of what I put forth, is not what I did write about…

But take the OP before God, and if by chance there is life therein, may God confirm or deny…

But thanks for the honesty and may God so fill you with Himself in a new and wonderful way….

Blessings, love and prayers, a fellow follower of His, Not me

Blessings and your so welcome…

But the enormity of this truth you penned, if one would in all their endeavors endeavor to make this their life, in very short order would God become so real and alive in that one…

Be blessed in being a that one…

Unto Him be our all, Not me
