I'm not blaming the church, or rather: the true body of ekklesia, of which some in the Roman catholic church are a part. How many? Few, I'm sure.

The purchase of indulgences had everything to do with the pope's promise of absolution: the more you paid, the more absolution, not only for the living, but for the dead awaiting judgment in the unbiblical place called purgatory. And if you paid handsomely toward Leo's works project, no need to repent and be born again, you were a shoo in to God's heavenly kingdom.

Jesus DIDN'T use the English word, "Peter" nor did He use the Greek word, "Petros". He used the Aramaic word, "Kepha".
This is why Paul refers to him NOT as Peter - but as "Cephas" in his letters, which is a Greek transliteration of the Aramaic word, "Kepha".

Kepha is defined "ROCK". Not "small, moveable stone" - just "ROCK".
What Jesus told him was:
"And I tell you, you are Kepha, and on this Kepha I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

"Petros" is used in the Greek because "Petra" would NEVER be used to describe a man, being a feminine noun.

So, the lesson here is:

What makes you so certain that Jesus and His disciples did not speak Greek or Latin, for that matter? Judeans were several generations under helenistic rule where learning all things Greek was a requirement. All of the NT manuscripts and fragments, save one, is written in Greek. I am sure they all knew Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and probably Latin as well. You can presume to know all, but you actually know little.
