There's no misunderstanding. Lying is in violation of the 10 Commandments. Lying is sin with no doubt.
But is there diffent levels of sin? Are some sins worse than others? Of course there are differing levels to severity of sin. There's an entire study along with that but it is backed up by scripture. There are sins, transgressions, iniquities, blasphemies and....uncleanness(?).
I think that's also why different punishments are described in scripture. You have the Lake of Fire and you have Outer Darkness and per

Lying is across the board, so it depends on the outcome of the lie and the intention that went into it to determine how severe it was. Ex., One lie will get you a free pack of gum at the store, whereas another lie may get someone killed and that would obviously be worse.
