Suggestions For Father's Day

Ephesians 5:22-33
22Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Husbands love

Its noted how the wives are not commanded to love their husbands only to submit, or obey as the word implies. Notice the husband is not told to exact submission, but simply to love. In fact, husbands must "submit" also (Eph 5:21NET)

Notice the context of verse 21? "In the fear of God"!

There is no ecclesiastical hierarchy in relation to fearing God, although in other matters of the home and congregation the head of the woman is the man.

Set aside the hyper-pious postings that usually infest practical threads like this, here is a suggestion for Dad (I know I would appreciate this gift if it was ever offered).

Allow Dad on Father's Day: One Day Alone.

I know the wives will feel put off and offended by this, but we don't always need to be around you all of the time on special occasions. We don't always want to share special times, and Father's Day is the best day to do this for Dad.

Just let us have the keys to the car/motorcycle/truck, stop by the cigar shop, and when we get home late that evening greet us with a hug and a kiss and a "Happy Father's Day" and forget about it.

We don't want to have a secret rendezvous with the local gorgeous barista at Starbucks, nor do we want to snort coke or drink whisky till we fall over. We just want to be able to go nowhere and take our time getting there. And when we get there come back home a different way. We want to be able to get lost for a while, not ask for directions, yet still find our way home. Maybe we spend time with our thoughts, maybe with God, maybe with Frankie and Dino on the CD. We have so many hats and duties those times during the day we steal for ourselves make us feel guilty. But if we get the gift of One Day Alone those times we steal from you and the family will be much less frequent. It let's us know you value us for being a GUY, the weird way we are wired, and the weird way we show we care.

I don't know... but that's just me...
