I am observant of others and hopefully very aware of myself.

I'm saying, "old man", that is the Biblical terminology. You can also say "flesh",
Galatians 5:24 KJV
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
This place, "have crucified", this is an active voice verb, something you do.
This is not some eastern religion thing. We have to - MUST - be put to death with Christ, to be raised with Him. And Scripture, as I've quoted above, we are to bring that into our lives. I see this involved in working out our salvation.
Before the cross, Jesus said to deny yourself. After the cross, Scripture speaks of dying with Christ, and of being transformed by the renewing of your mind. Interesting, isn't it?
Oh, and so you know, I do actually care what the Scriptures say.

Yes the old man or flesh must be put to death/crucified. This is our old life before we are in Christ. The new man is the new life. Nothing to do with our 'self'. Our self must be denied. It is that awareness of our inner being which follows after who is sitting on the throne of our hearts.

Hit the trenches my friend . yesterday is gone , tomorrow is not gauranteed
TODAY is the day we preach JESUS the CHRIST and all lovely words He did say and all lovely truth
the apostels left us too in the bible .
No man knows the day of the LORD
nor does any man know when their time on earth be up .
BUT THIS i do know
He who saves . JESUS THE CHRIST OF GOD .
But beware for within christendom another jesus is being preached by many now
and its not the christ of GOD either . just as men have crept into the false religoins
so too have many crept within christendom . TO MERGE THEM
to unite as one , to find common ground , and in time they will believe
that they all serve the same GOD .
its kind of true in part , THEY WILL be serving the same god . BUT IT WONT BE THE GOD OR HIS CHRIST
but another god and his anti christ .

I would sooner identify with the new man, that is who I am, that is my "self". And that is not to be denied. I'm to live out my new self. Or, rather, as "new self" or "old self" isn't actually Scriptural terminology, I'm to put on the new man, and put off the old man.
Paul, in Romans 7, wrote this way, identifying with the new man, saying, "it is no more I, but sin that lives in me", and, "in know that in me, that is, in my flesh, lives no good thing". The flesh had become something that Paul was not.

Who exactly is this "self"? I see in Scripture the old man and the new man. The old man is crucified with Christ, and we are become new. Who is the "self" in your thinking?

Agreed. That’s what I did years ago in this case and I affirm, the peace is incredible.
We are all on a Spiritual journey and on different points along that journey. Sure, some threads are debate (doctrine) threads. Other threads are personal experience threads, like this one. No need to turn it into another “if you don’t have my doctrine, you are wrong and here’s why” thread. LOL.
Things we are to "add" to our faith. I say, add, Peter uses a word that means "upon the chorus leader", which referred to their tradition that a rich patron would be tapped to supply what was needed for the next civic stage play, and the idea was, "You are rich, so don't scrimp! Give them all they need and then some!" It speaks of supplying with abundance.
Temperance is another word for self-control. We are to abundantly add to our faith virtue (valor), the courage and will to do what is good, and to that knowledge, knowing what is in fact good, and to that self-control, the act of restricting one's self to what is good, and to that perseverance, continuing to restrict one's self to what is good.
We are to do this, ourselves. Add self control. How do you "add" self control if you lack self control? His is the power, ours is the choice.

WHAT BEAUTIFUL TRUTH SISTER .
now behold how men often twist this truth unto their own destruction .
That by these promises you might be partakers of THE DIVINE nature .
and yet , take heed sister and watch what gets wrote next and test it too , they
seem so fast to have forgotten the HAVING ESCAPED the CORRUPTION that is in the world THROUGH LUST .
cause they seem to honor certain sins and yet claim to have THE NEW DIVINE nature
OH THEY can sure claim WE DEVINE , we GODS , WE THE POWER
and yet they LIVE IN AND SUPPORT their own sins .
THEY forgot , because in truth THEY NEVER KNEW AND EXPERIENCED THE TRUE .
at most they sat under men who twisted junk unto them .
THEY NEVER KNEW . IF THEY HAD KNOWN , IF THEY HAD TRULY KNOWN
why would they have loved a lie . Now i know folks can get into the flesh at times
But THIS IS WHY we CORRECT sister .
But whom i speak of and who i warn of , THEY WOLVES SISTER . fully grown adult wolves in wool
who do nothing but seduce this people . THE THING IS
THE BORN AGAIN AINT GONNA SIT NOR REMIAIN under such folks .
TRUE LAMBS LOVE TRUTH . wambs love only the truth that supports and pleases their own flesh
and by GOLLY that AINT TRUTH AT ALL .

any guesses on what the old man lived for . SINS and pleasures in life .
AND DEAD HE IS FOR HE LIVED IN SIN .
The new man , the new creature , created BY GOD IN JESUS THE CHRIST
that one loves GOD , loveth CHRIST , loveth TRUTH .
not sins , not that which is pleasing to man , but that which is PLEASING TO GOD ALL MIGHTY .
AND SIN AINT PLEASING TO GOD ALL MIGHTY .
many claim to be the new creature , to walk by the power and by the Spirit of GOD his self
YET their spirit sure seems to love the things THAT DO NOT PLEASE GOD . OOPSY me thinks we got us a DELUSION IN THE HOUSE .
a DELUSION that many buy into . But LAMBS , the born again , DONT BUY LIES
they BUY THE TRUTH and SELL HER NOT . EVERY BEAUTIFUL AND LOVELY WORD OF GOD they embrace
and every evil lustful contrary thought , THEY HATE . ME THINKS , or i should say KNOWS ,
that many are not following the SPIRIT at all , at most they follow men . THEY WONT MAKE IT EITHER .
BELIEVE YOU ME , they WONT MAKE IT .

and now preaches in large a message that only teaches the dead how to be DEAD AGAIN and TWICE DEAD
IT has , as have its leaders and many within it , embraced a message
that offered up the idea of salvation and yet that idea was but a message of slavation .
a message that offered up a jesus that wont correct sins and errors
but rather seemth to embrace sins and errors
a message that promised them life and yet by its version of life
NONE REPENTED OF HIS EVIL WICKED WAY . BINGO . we got problems

i sure seem to notice your peace sure wont correct a man who is drowning in a lie of unbelief
on another post . You just did all to hug that drowning man . Pancho frioles .
YA DID NOTHING TO HELP HIM . NOTHING . HE denies and rejectes the biblical CHRIST
and he made sure to let me know he NEVER claimed to believe . at which i then
wept and did all i could for that man . YET ALL YOU DID was try and find COMMON GROUND .
and all you do is go after folks like me who expose the false religoins and who do say and remind
THEY MUST REPENT TO BELIEVE ON JESUS THE CHRIST . I have no peace when i see folks in danger .
WHERE IS YOUR LOVE for the lost my friend . I SURE DONT SEE IT .
NOW GET BACK on that thread and you CORRECT that man and do all to HELP that man .

5) Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
This "evil concupiscence" is the desire for evil things, one of the fleshy lusts. Which we are told to mortify, or, "put to death".
Interestingly, Paul speaks in terms of killing one's own body parts. "Your members" refers to the members of your body. Kill therefore your body parts that are upon the earth, he wrote.
