I have just started to begin a study on the Book of Revelation. I came across an interesting prophecy in 2:10 where it tells us that some will have tribulation 10 days.

So, does anyone have any thoughts on what God is telling us about? These 10 days were or are found within the church of Smyrma - the second church of the seven.

So you're talking about the Spirit's letter to the church in Smyrna, where Jesus says:

"I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death." (Revelation 2:9-11)

I would just say that if one is to insist that the "ten days" in the bolded sentence above is actually ten 24-hour periods, then... well a question... Is is likewise to be taken both woodenly and literally that the devil is going to throw some folks into prison? This question is rhetorical, really... I would submit to you that this passage ~ as is the rest of Revelation ~ is filled with shocking images pointing to a far greater spiritual reality and equally relevant to its readers 2000 years ago and today and at every point in between.

Grace and peace to you.

Revelation 2:8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

Revelation 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Revelation 20:7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

The reason I included Revelation 20:7 is because it shows that while the devil is in the pit it equals this--his prison

Revelation 2:10 says this of the devil---the devil shall cast some of you into prison

Regardless, what that might look like is not the point. The point is this. When Revelation 2:10 is meaning, it can not be meaning when Revelation 20:1-3 is meaning. IOW, Revelation 2:10 can not be meaning during the thousand years since it is a contradiction if the devil is in prison himself at the time, that he would be casting others into another prison, lol.

Only per Amil is something funny like that possible, I guess. Per Premil it is not possible. Per Premil Revelation 2:10 would not be meaning during the thousand years to begin with, it would be meaning before the thousand years.

There is a way, I guess, that Revelation 2:10 could still work with Amil without painting a nonsensical picture, that while satan is in prison himself, he is casting others into another prison. The way it could still work with Amil, Revelation 2:10 is meaning after the thousand years during satan's little season. Now Revelation 2:10 and Revelation 20:1-3 are not contradicting each other. But this only counts is if Amil is correct that the thousand years precede the 2nd coming.

You need to read the context carefully:

Rev 2:8-11
(8) And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
(9) I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
(10) Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
(11) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

This obviously is NOT a prophesy of physical worldly prisons. Being tried (tested) in prison is a symbolism of being in a church that is in spiritual "captivity" to the beast. The two witnesses are not free to preach or witness to the truth. This is the prison they are in. But even in this, God commands that they must remain faithful until death, or until they are killed. The 10 days symbolize the "fullness" of time, and God encouraging them to be faithful unto death is to stand fast until they are killed in the streets of this church, which is spiritually Jerusalem. The elect shall be faithful unto death. In other words, as God's word reiterates, "Here is the faith and patience of the saints." It is our duty to remain faithful in this house that Satan has overcome, until we are killed in the tribulation there. This is our "Trial of faith!" The test is, will we bow down and worship the image of the beast like professed Chrsitians around us there, or will we reject his mark and remain faithful unto death.

That is what is in view.

It is prophetic time. Based on a day for a year principle,
“After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. ”
Numbers 14:34 KJV

“5 For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. 6 And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year. ”
Ezekiel 4:5-6 KJV
Unfeigned Bible

Smyrna prophetically depicted the time of the early church from 100ad to about 300ad. It means persecuted. The ten days warmed of a period of particularly intense persecution of ten years, the term of Diocletian's reign as emperor. The persecution itself was from 303ad to 313 ad when the Edict of Milan was signed.

I have read that interpretation... Do you think this verse refers only to those 10 years? Will there be individuals that identify as "Smyrna" followers found in all periods of the next 2000 years? If so, what would these 10 days mean to him?

It's usually a mistake to cherry pick something from one book and force it into the context of a completely different book. It has a name, eisegesis.

The ten days in Rev 2 is simply ten days.

This is what people with carnal minds think. They say, let's say its ten days and then figure out where to put it on their prophecy calendar to fit their doctrine. That is silly!

No, the number ten and it's multiples (100, 1,000, etc.) illustrate the COMPLETENESS or FULLNESS OF WHATEVER IS IN VIEW.

Here is the lesson... if you have wisdom - with the spirit of Christ (remember?).

Luke 15:8
  • "Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?"
Here in the parable of the ten silver pieces, a woman loses one of the ten. She searches for it until she finds it. This is numerical symbolism which shows the believer's search for lost souls representing those who are to be Saved. When we have found what was lost, the batch will be a full or complete treasure. The number ten signified the fullness of believers there. We are the silver which is found by the lighted candle. This is just like the parable of the one hundred (multiple of 10) sheep:

Luke 15:3-5
  • "And he spake this parable unto them, saying,
  • What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
  • And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing".
The same principle applies. If we lose one of them, we search till we find it. So the fullness of them must be found. The number one hundred there signified the fullness of believers which are shepherded over. Likewise in the multiple of 10x100, it signifies the fulness of whatever is in view. Isaiah chapter seven speaks about the First coming of the Lord (verse 14) and says,

Isaiah 7:23
  • "And it shall come to pass in THAT DAY, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns. With arrows and with bows shall men come hither; because All he land shall become briers and thorns."
Are we to suppose this is a literal number? Humm? Were there literally one thousand vines and one thousand silverlings (not 1001 or 999)? When we look at the verse carefully we see that God is using numerical symbology to signify that where there was the fullness of vines, there will be briers and thorns. The number one thousand is not to alert us to the exact literal number of vines, or the exact literal number of one thousand silverlings (pieces of silver money), rather it is to illustrate where the fullness of vines once were, and where the fullness of treasure was, it is changed to briers and thorns. Not literally every place where one thousand pieces of silver were of one thousand vines were. The word thousand is merely being used to signify a very long time, but not literally a thousand.

Deuteronomy 7:9
  • "Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;"
1st Chronicles 16:15
  • "Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,"
Psalms 105:8
  • "He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations."
This is a thousand used figuratively to illustrate the fullness of time, not literally a thousand generations. His Word is commanded to all generations, not just literally one thousand. But God is using the number thousand here to show spiritual consistency in representing the fullness. Likewise in Revelation chapter 20, where it speaks of the one thousand year millennial reign of Christ. It is the perfect example of this numerical symbology. It signifies the fullness of time of the reign of Christ, the binding of satan, and the rest of the dead live not again, before the second Resurrection. Not the totality of time from the beginning, and not literally one thousand years, but the fullness of time between events spoken of there.

The same goes with ten days in Revelation 2... well...if you have the wisdom of Christ to know what He actually talk about here! It is NOT ten literal days as you think. It is fullness of time when Satan is being loosened to trail God's faithful as he takes over the house of God. This is what the great tribulation is about.

Jesus gives several prophecies in those messages concerning his elect and the things they suffer before they are killed .This particular message is to them in tribulation .
Being placed in prison and killed is what takes place to the elect after the arrival of the second beast of revelation 13 in Israel.

Revelation 13:10
Anyone who is destined for prison will be taken to prison. Anyone destined to die by the sword will die by the sword. This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently and remain faithful.

Revelation 14
13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Daniel 11:33-35
Wise leaders will give instruction to many, but these teachers will die by fire and sword, or they will be jailed and robbed.
During these persecutions, little help will arrive, and many who join them will not be sincere.
And some of the wise will fall victim to persecution. In this way, they will be refined and cleansed and made pure until the time of the end, for the appointed time is still to come.

Jesus also mentions these same persecutions in the gospel such as the Olivet discourse.

The Smyrna Church is an image of the believers who will build the Third Temple described in the prophecy of Ezekiel. The 10 days of tribulation correspond to the 10 days of the consecration of the altar, from the 1st to the 10th day of the 7th month of Tishrei, from Yom Teruah to Yom Kippur. These days are called "aseret yemei teshuva", "ten days of return [to God]". During these 10 days, the "elect from the four winds" will enter the eastern gate of the Temple, they are also shown in the image of the Church of Philadelphia in Revelation. The Church of Smyrna will complete its mission after Yom Kippur, on the 10th day: "be thou faithful unto death". The moment of closing the eastern gate of the Temple (Ezekiel 44:2) will be that "twinkling of an eye" when the status of the people who entered the eastern gate will change: they will become the incarnation of Jesus Christ at the Second Coming. After this, the bowls of wrath will begin. When the spiritually dead Jewish people come to life, then after the 6th vial the way will open for the "kings from the east of the sun", the "lost tribes of Israel" will be able to return to the land of the covenant, 5 wise virgins will be taken to the Lord in Israel, and then the city of Yahweh Shammah will be built in Israel, the appearance of which will become the 7th vial of wrath.

Correct, for the most part. I just didn't go into detail about it, and I was very intentional in that. :)

We, Galgal... we, all those of us who are in Christ... are the Temple. :) What Paul writes in Ephesians 2:19-22 is very instructive here.

Those of us who are in Christ will enter the eastern gate of the Third Temple, which will be built in the Judean Desert, according to the prophecy of Ezekiel. This will be the incarnation of the Word of God, the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

Okay, well, we disagree. <smile>

As Paul says in Ephesians 2:19-22, we in Christ are "no longer strangers and aliens, but... fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in Whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him (we) also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit."

So the Temple is being built now,... it is also referred to elsewhere as the city of God, nowhere more relevantly than Hebrews 11:8-10, where the writer speaks of Abraham being "called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance... not knowing where he was going... by faith... was "looking forward to the city that has foundations, Whose Designer and Builder is God."

Grace and peace to you.

He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. (1 John 2:6)

Everything will be determined soon. Who believes in which Jesus Christ. Some in the real one, and some in the Roman sun god who replaced God in the "temple of the living God."

As He walked, yes, for sure. And just to be clear, we're here talking about Christ Jesus Himself, Who, as you know, was speaking of Himself in John 2:19 when He said He would rebuild the temple in three days...

Everything will be determined soon.
Well, it already has. <smile> And, in the fullness of time ~ God's time, of course ~ we will all see. For those of us in Christ, our faith will finally be sight. But yeah...

Who believes in which Jesus Christ. Some in the real one, and some in the Roman sun god who replaced God in the "temple of the living God."
Many have exchanged the truth for a lie and have worshiped creation rather than the Creator, for sure. They will be on Jesus's left at the final Judgment, and will not stand in the congregation of the righteous... a sad truth.

Grace and peace to you.

You need to read the context carefully:

Rev 2:8-11
(8) And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;

I call this description of Rev 2:8-11 "any interpretation goes."
