So...I've come to realize the real reason I was so worried about the intrusive thoughts was that I was so obsessed over "debunking" any notion that I would ever want or like such thoughts that I ended up trying to reason away any doubts about that logically, which is really just ruminating over what the thoughts might mean about me despite trying to just accept that unwanted thoughts happen and there's nothing that can be done about that. In trying so hard to disprove that I could have ever wanted such things, I ignored what i knew in my heart all along: I know such things are wrong and I would never want to let that run through my head.

I was so obsessed I ended up having scenarios run through my head of me thinking them on purpose, and my fear interpreted that as real, and my obsession with proving I wasn't a "thought criminal", if you will, even in principle made me ignore how much I hated all of it to it's core...this is something i will need to repent for, so please pray both that I'll overcome that and that I'll learn to accept these thoughts as just the mental static they are.

You haven't said what the nature of these unwanted thoughts are, e.g. violent, sexual, blasphemous, who-knows-what-all. I guess you don't need to. This is a prayer forum, and I promise I will pray for you.

Oh, and Jabre, God loves you, unwanted thoughts and all. Okay?

“3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; ”
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 KJV

God wishes us to have the mastery over ourselves. But He cannot help us without our consent and co-operation. The divine Spirit works through the powers and faculties given to man. Of ourselves, we are not able to bring the purposes and desires and inclinations into harmony with the will of God; but if we are "willing to be made willing," the Saviour will accomplish this for us, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

If you are sincere and take no delight in those thoughts, and being a born again Christian you reject the ideas and inclinations that accompany them, then it is possible those thoughts don't come from within, but without... Satan. Resist him and he will flee from you. Surrender your mind and heart to Christ daily, and trust in His love allowing the holy Spirit to sanctify you through His word. Read the scriptures daily. Pray constantly. As the scripture says, the weapons of your warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God for the pulling down of strongholds.

The weapons of our warfare would not have us to follow , to join with , to find common ground with
He who sitteth and whose name addeth up to a certain number . DO KEEP that in mind friend . DO keep that in mind .

I have to ask, if this passage is about intrusive thoughts, why is there no mention of such in the larger context? No really, read chapters 8-9 then that again.

2 Corinthians 10:5

"Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."

Philippians 4:8

"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things."

Isaiah 26:3

"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You."

Romans 12:2

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Psalm 94:19

"In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul."

2 Timothy 1:7

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

Matthew 6:34

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

Colossians 3:2

"Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth."

Psalm 139:23-24

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

1 Peter 5:7

"Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."

These verses provide insight into dealing with intrusive thoughts by encouraging us to fix our minds on Christ, meditate on what is pure, take negative thoughts captive, and rely on God’s peace and care for our well-being.

Praying for you @Jabre ..hope this helps.

Psalm 55:22offers us comfort and guidance in dealing with intrusive thoughts. Psalm 55:22 says, "Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken." This verse reminds us that we can bring our burdens, including intrusive thoughts, to the Lord.

We are in a war. A spiritual war. That war is between Christ and Satan, and because Christ is unreachable, then His Church is the target of Satan's hatred. And it's a battle over the mind. How we think. What we think. Particularly of what we think about the character of God. Because it is the character of God, and the lies and slander that Satan/ Lucifer spread in heaven, that remains as the key issue in today's context especially in relation to the consummation of all things at the second coming of Christ.
How do we defend ourselves against the lies of the enemy? How do we avoid being deceived into thinking God is unfaithful, selfish, tyrannical, narcissistic? Truth. Where is truth found? Jesus. Where do you decide Who Jesus is? In the mind.

We have to control our thoughts. Scripture says take those thoughts captive to Christ and cast them down. I've dont that and it works, the thoughts leave.

Having a bad thought is not sin in and of itself. But what do you do with those thoughts? Obsess over them? Dwell on them? ERRRNT, wrong answer.

If you enertain those thoughts by dwelling on them then they slip down into your heart and become a part of who you are. It could be a lie but if you spend time on it you can make them real by taking them into your heart.

Try this next time intrusive thoughts come. You already know that those thoughts are lies, or you wouldnt be starting a thread about it! So when the thought first comes and makes you think this or that, say out loud, I reject that thought as a lie because scripture says (whatever is relevant that you know) and so I reject it as an untruth and cast it down out of me to go to Jesus...

That's what works for me, and they go away. One time it wouldnt go away so I strted reading the Psalms so I could put different thoughts in my head.

You have to control your thoughts. You have to resist what the enemy is trying to convince you of. If you were to go on a reading the word binge and just read your bible 12 or 14 hours a day it will saturate your mind with the word of God. Then meditate on it and dwell on the word and then it is poured into cup of your heart which when full begins to overflow and the iniquity in your heart is flushed out (Ephesians 5:26)

Romans 12:2

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God..../KJV

You get conformed into the image of this world by what you allow yourself to watch, movies, music, worldly things rather than things of God. You get transformed by the renewing of your mind through reading the word of God. If you saturate yourself with the word of God then God will be the only thing you think about.

Scripture tells you dont think on those things, think on these things to show you how to do it. Have some faith, resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Phillipians 4:8
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things..../KJV

But here's the thing, if not rejecting a thought actively means "you allow it to be who you are", what does that mean for people who have tried this, desperately, BECAUSE they don't agree, yet they become even stronger and more convincing because of that? How many of these end up in some kind of despair even "knowing they have to keep fighting", like I did? Now I'm not saying this approach you suggest doesn't work for some, I would be a fool to question your case, but it does bring into question your logic/interpretation.

I work on recovery from intrusive thoughts because I know in my heart of hearts, my conscience and all I believe or have any desire to that these are not what I want. Pardon if this seems harsh, but it would seem you're effectively accusing me, and the people I mentioned of of "willingly entertaining them", of "allowing them to be part of their personality".

This is a grave misunderstanding of the issue. We don't let it pass on its own because we agree. These thoughts are allowed to pass because we know they don't mean anything about us, they pop up and our brain becomes so attached to the perceived danger BECAUSE we hate them. If we wanted them, we wouldn't panic over them, and work so hard to mute their power and teach ourselves they hold no meaning. We wouldn't rebel so hard against the notion they stem from our personality or "hidden desires".

I agree, we should focus on what's good, work towards bettering our actual sin issues. But what you suggest defies observation of the world around us, the plight and terror of people like me who suffer under an idea much like this, so I must warn you not to continue with this. If doctrine or what you think Scripture says defies basic logic and observation, it makes it no different than cult doctrine, effectively brainwashing yourself, and ultimately harming others as well.

I wasnt meaning to imply that that is what you are doing in your situation, just that those things are possible. If you like I could flip the script and ask it a different way.

How often do you pray about it? How often have you taken authority over it in Jesus name? How many times have you made declarations of faith for it to stop in Jesus name?

I'm just saying you should adopt a spiritual stance against it and the word says you can overcome it in Christ so if you arent doing any of those things I asked about, start doing them. Story. One time someone messed me over so bad. Stole a lot of valuable things from me. I hated him for it. Then I read in scripture that we have to forgive people, but I couldnt do, it was too much. So I prayed out loud and I made by a declaration of faith in the Lord that I forgive them anyway even if my heart disagrees. And it didnt happen right away. I made the same or similar declarations for few weeks every day at least and one day I was thinking and I realized that I didnt have that unforgiveness in my heart for them anymore. I pray for those who did that to me now. Just because I made declarations of faith for it to be so, even when I didnt feel the same (at first)

So declarations in faith work my friend. You can chase those bad voices away and command them to leave in Jesus name, thy have to obey.
I meant no offense to you brother.

Sounds like typical compulsive behavior(at least from what i understand), but that's just an observation. I don't believe "declarations of faith" or "commanding things in Jesus name" has scriptural basis(I very much used to buy into it and tried, it only fueled the cycle too. If you could tell me your denomination, or why you believe Scripture says this perhaps?)

I do pray regularly over this, but not more than I think is necessary. I typically pray over it once then trust God from there, and a general daily prayer to help with this.

All I can tell you is what I know. If you dont want to take the word of God seriously, that's your business. It did sound like it might be bothering you from your first post so I tried to help. My bad, whatever. Sorry I couldnt help you. The best I can tell you at this point is that, you should read the word of God for yourself and believe what it says.

Or not, it's your choice.

I could have told you how I thought about that very thing and stopped doing it. That is, how I stopped saying a prayer in the morning and then heading out into the world for my day. I didnt walk away from him and invited Him to come with me, and...well, you'd prolly think that was OC or something else weird too so I wont bore you with what happened to me when I did that.

The bottom line is that this isnt some namby pamby sunday school religion like we were all taught. It's much more real than that. And if you dont believe me then open your bible read for yourself.

I made this post in a worse place, with much less learned than now. I also do pray frequently outside of that(Was just trying to obey Jesus's command to not use vain repetition), and spread the Gospel to those willing to hear. I'll be willing to hear your testimony in a DM if you want to tell.

Vain repititions are repeating something over and over in prayer. You only need to speak it once. But make no mistake about it you need to pray every day. Praying every day is not vain repition, there's a different term for it, it's called, closer relationship.

You ever stay up all night talking to someone? A girl you're close with or a good smart friend, whoever. It's because you are close to them that you can easily be with them all night and all of a sudden, whoa it's getting light out!

Every day during that covid lockdown thing I prayed Psalm 91 over my life and property. Every day. That was not vain repitition, that was part of my daily prayer. It's good to pray early in the morning and read the word of God to get connected with the Lord. The word of God lets us look at the condition of our soul each morning. It's about seeking relationship and scripture says those who seek will find.

I dont want to be one of the guys that the Lord says to me I never knew you! That, would be bad. I'd rather be known as the little chatter box chld that never shuts up! Hi Lord! It's me again!

Scripture does say for us to...pick up our cross daily so it isnt wrong to bug the Lord every day in prayer. He wants us to!
