“Obey Or Disobey”
By Zach Wood
Jonah 1:1-3

As I have been reading this book recently, Jonah’s story has intrigued me once again. I’m especially amazed how this book begins. God directs Jonah to do something and Jonah does not hesitate to just run the opposite way God commands.

Instead of obeying, Jonah just takes off and goes his own route. He does a complete 180 and turns away from where God wants him to go. We all know this wasn’t a good idea for Jonah. We look and think, “What were you thinking, man? Why are you running from where God is sending you? That’s crazy! Don’t do that!”

As I would be one to think that way as well, I can’t help but to think how many of us have done the same exact thing Jonah did? There are only two choices when God gives us a command and tells us to do something. We either go or we run away. There is no in-between. Either we obey or we disobey. If we choose to wait and think about it, we have chosen to disobey. Granted, there are times when God gives us something to think about and consider, yes. However, there are also times when God gives us a command and He wants us to go without hesitation.

Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh. He refused to go……at first. I have found myself acting like Jonah so often in my life. God tells me to do something and I seem to argue, rationalize and find any possible way to explain that it’s not something I really should do. Sometimes I’m actually able to convince myself it’s not something I should do. At least for a short time I’m able to do that. Until the conviction sets in.

When calls you to action to do something, will you obey or will you disobey? It’s totally up to you, but we soon find out that when we disobey, we really come to regret it later.

When God instructs, will you obey or disobey?

When God says: “Jump” I only have one question: “how high?” Right now, as far as I know I just lost $36000. We had a deal that would give us $36000 over next three years on getting free house to live in and renting out ours for at least $1000 per month.
My wife said God told her to pass on the deal. OK, I will pass then.

It does not make me special in any way. I just learned from disobeying God way too many times.

Oh by the way. If you want to tell me that God does not talk to people like that or now days…. Go ahead! Make me laugh!

Nice thoughts and reasoning on Jonah. But what I get from it is that God's will is done regardless. Remember Jonah's reasoning was he wanted the evil to perish and He knew God was longsuffering and wanted to let them off the hook Jonah 4:2.

We must be so careful in just acting on an impulse assuming it is from God. Look closely at Jonah and you will see there was NO doubt in his mind that God had instructed him to go to Nineveh. Today God leads us to where He wants us differently! We basically fall into the place He wants us. We are lead by the spirit of God and scripture is crystal clear that we must test the spirits speaking to us! We use our brains and scripture for that!

Sorry bud but I don't witness with this. If the deal was unlawful or some evil repercussion, sure, but to simply ignore because of an apparent voice.... Simply makes no sense and God is logical. He doesn't want us to be mad when He gave us brains. Think about it.

She said that God showed her that we will end up being enemies with people who give us free house to live in. They are our good friends now. Call it a warning, vision…. You name it. She said she cannot sleep well for two days now. Same message comes over again and again. OK, no free house for me then.

Sure, many will call it mysticism. I had experiences proving otherwise.

Maybe God just doesn't want you to exploit the good nature of your friends? You want to take a house from someone for nothing while charging another for your house? Yes, I doubt God would be too wild about that. I have a feeling your wife's conscience was speaking, its good you to listen to her :)

Those friends are quite well off and they clearly understand that we would profit from the deal. They just need somebody they can trust to keep up their property, which is somewhat remote.

For me it sounded like an awesome deal. Live in the nice house out in the woods for three years and rake in money renting out our house. It just does not get to a be better deal then that! I even had a trusted relative lined up to take over my house! Ever since we said yes to our friends my wife just kept on getting stronger and stronger conviction and now a clear message that we should pass. Why? I do not understand but God knows best.

I could almost see myself sitting by the heated pool in the afternoon or in jacuzzi and watch heard of elk come in for usual afternoon grazing….. uh, not to be!

reminds me of the time my wife said honey,, i dont think its in your best intrest to take that job//

the want add said ----------------needed and will train -----------dynamite worker must be willing to travel ..
Now i want to reply to the topic not about what some one said about the topic.

The only way you will understand the story is if you find in the bible where God says he hates the sinner .. A holy God does not only hate sin he hates the sinner..some ones been lying to you if you think God only hates sin not the sinner .. the bible says different..

Jonah disobyed God because he knew what God was upto.. Jonah hated the people of nineveh
and he knew God was going to use him to save them. as you read the story you find God was not going to take no for a answer.. in fact he miraculously used his super natural power to deliver Jonah on the mission .

now fast forward to Jesus who points out the story of jonah relating it to his death for us

JESUS BEING Holy God was delivered miraculosly here to save all sinners HE WAS TRUE GOD WHO HATED SIN AND WE ALLREDY KNOW God hates sinners.. Yet God love for us in Jesus did something very strange JESUS agreed to stand between A ANGRY HEAVENLY fATHER
AND US TAKING hIS FATHER WRATH UPON HIMSELF..

the Trinity is one in essance all 3 persons are one God

The law always states a holy God must hate not only the sin but the sinner also ..

The gospel says God chose to love all sinners in Jesus..

you see even in the story of Jonah

That the Creator himself comes to us and becomes our ransom - this is the reason
for our rejoicing.-- Martin Luther 25 March 1533 "Table Talks"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matthew 12:40
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 12:41
The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.

Psalm 5:5
The arrogant cannot stand in your presence. You hate all who do wrong;

Psalm 11:5
The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.

God wants us to obey. Even when it is very hard. Due to us living in a world of sin. That looks good but ain't. Due to the word and World of God. We need to always follow the Lord. Remember the hymn "Trust and Obey" for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey. Even when the deck is against us!

2 Corinthians 5:19
that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

Well it such a very interesting book i just had to view it again and every thing Jesus said ..ABOUT IT..
since you covered disobediance so well ---which jonah and we all do--- i will not need to mention it

The book it self Tells what the main purpose IS AND why God included it in the old testament

the sign of Jonah is easly shown in the book and other places so we can know what that sighn is and take heed .

and Jesus refers to the sign of Jonah in several places of the new testament as well .
it is a direct message for us to this sigh of jonah for me and you also..

yet just as important Jesus lets us know in the new testament Jonah also tells his story.. his rising from the dead after three days proving all what he promised is true .. including our sins have been payed for completly .. just as jonah came out of the belly of the creature or large fish from the sea after 3 days .. This large creature may or may not have been one of a kind,, God does not say,, we only know God had it swallow Jonah and God perserved Jonah during this ordeal and after

No where in the book does it say we are to take these miracles in any other way--------- than historical fact ..

It happened and there are many more miracles that God performed and the book of jonah talks about them.. In cluding the coversion of sailors to faith in the savior that would come and die for their sins to ,, This conversion to Christ happened during a real doosy of a storm in which Jonah asks to be thrown over ;;So that God will end the storm.

of course the reason for the storm we find out is Jonah wanting no part of God saving the evil people of nenevah.. this is clear in the same verses that tells the main purpose God included the book of Jonah ..

Jonah 4:2

as we read the book we find Gods mercy love compassion and salvation .. and that is the MAIN PURPOSE OF THE BOOK GOD WANTS US TO KNOW HE IS A GOD OF LOVE AND MERCY and compassion AND IS PATIENT not wanting any one not to be saved.... AND IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS he SAVES THE UNGODLY!! and that includes you and me..

we also find what the sign of Jonah is ;;;and has always been .. Jonah was not only sent TO PREACH REPENTENCE to THE EVIL PEOPLE OF Ninevah BUT OTHER PEOPLE ALSO REPENTED including Jonah.. The book is full of the message of Repentence .. WE ALSO Know John the baptist preached repentance AS JESUS FOR RUNNER .. The book of Jonah also is to prepare to meet Jesus and Jesus instructed his christian church to preach repentance .. the Sign of jonah is "REPENT"

WHICH MEANS FEEL SO SORRY WE NEVER WANT TO DO SIN AGAIN BUT ALSO TRUST IN JESUS FOR FORGIVNESS .. oR in Jonas case and the nenviah PEOPLE to trust in the promise of jesus that would come and save his people from there sins..

we also learn there is no place in being a christian and holding hate for other people we are not to rqacist or concider other people worse than our selves God want to save all The main purpose of the book of Jonah is God shows his love and mercy and saves people Through faith that Jesus the promised one is the only savior from our sins..

. tHE BOOK OF JONAH IS BOTH LAW AND Gospel ..

God threatens evil ninevah who did evil things and worst of all worshiped other gods So God used his law on them through his profit and they repent and trusted in the promise of Jesus who would come and save them from their sins..

Obeying God means loving outwardly rather than selfishly - the way Christ loved us to death - His way is the only way to salvation and impossible without His justification and sanctification.

Horsecamp, what with my eyesight not being as good as it used to be, I appreciate the use of font larger than 14-point, but why did you choose to use font of such a massive size?

To me, you choice of font size is the equivalent of yelling, and yelling isn't a way to convince people to believe what you are saying.

Using all-capital letters to spell a word is also the equivalent of yelling.

I use 18-point font occasionally, but whenever I do so, it is because I want to better see what I am writing.
