If I have 1,000 candy bars and I know one of them will kill someone, is it ethical to sell them?
Is it ethical to advertise them as safe?
Is it ethical to be indemnified from any liability?
You tell me. We routinely sell candy bars with peanuts in them. We know for certain that some percentage of them will kill someone with a peanut allergy, and we still sell them. Is that ethical?
What if tomorrow some company invents a new drug that will 100% cure every type of cancer. It will also kill some small number of people who take it. Do we approve the drug for usage?
What if said company was 75% finished creating this miracle cancer drug and tells the government that it knows it will kill a certain number of people and they want indemnity from these deaths or they won't finish making the drug. Do we allow this? I guarantee you no pharmaceutical will ever create a drug they think they will lose money on.
I honestly don't know the answers to these questions, but I lean towards yes on all counts. Nothing is ever black and white and all three of these questions have areas of grey. What about you?
