How the idea of Immortal Soul got into the Church

It is the faith.... of Jesus Christ that we have, which we received when we were born again

Galatians 2:20
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Jesus IS God's Word... and faith comes from hearing God's Word

Romans 10:17
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

It is the Holy Spirit living in us that wells up into eternal life. Not something about ourselves.

Yes, we have nothing of immortality, only God.

The immortality of the soul is a curious thing because it pre-supposes that eternal life is not conditional on the gospel. Why would one need the gospel if their soul is already immortal? I believe this doctrine undermines Christianity.

Exactly, man then has no need of a saviour or redeemer if they are immortal of self, Christ is taken out of the picture. Satan is the only one pleased...
