Aunty, I live in America, so of course I'm going to speak from what I know. Feel free to substitute Australia (or wherever you know) and I think my original statement remains true.
Any comparison of today to a couple hundred years ago is going to show that we've got it good. The world is improving!
Anyone who thinks the western world is “improving“ hasn’t taken into consideration the level of poverty that exists today in once wealthy nations.…or should I say nations controlled by the wealthy elite?
It’s not the standard of the well paid minority, but the standard of living in a growing majority, as some once poor nations now have the jobs that our citizens used to have….and their job security was taken for granted….but the bigger these corporations are, the more heartless they become, and cheap manufacturing was too big a carrot to ignore. Profits were all that mattered….such is the nature of capitalism….dog eat dog.
Are we dogs? The ladder of success is littered with corpses.
The jobs and manufacturing industries moved offshore and made other nations rich at our expense….did the politicians care? What was done to save the jobs and to keep the manufacturing in their own nation as security for their future citizens? Even the food we buy in our supermarkets is more often than not, grown in another country….and kept in cold storage for so long that their nutritional value is next to nothing. Not to mention the farming methods used to produce what we eat.
We might be better off in our technology, but where does that offset the abject poverty of a growing majority? Those people living in their cars hold down jobs, but can’t earn enough to satisfy greedy landlords. Once thriving manufacturing cities are now ghost towns. There are almost as many living on the streets as there are in proper housing.
You have to turn a blind eye not to see it….and my own country is experiencing the very same thing.
It’s election time here soon and the campaigns of empty promises, and fear mongering against their competitors begins again in earnest, as if anyone can believe them anymore?
Religion and politics used to be debated hotly in my country…but not anymore because Aussies are not ones to put up with empty promises and blatant hypocrisy. But we are also by nature, apathetic. If it wasn’t compulsory to vote in my country, hardly anyone would bother.…and religion is seen as a bit of a joke. All it’s good for are the annual holidays when those who can afford it, go somewhere else to have fun and get paid for it. Token church goers may turn up and put money in the coffers, (like a conscience salve) but other than that churches are closing down as they are seen as good for very little. Those that remain often have to jostle for a pastor, and he usually goes to the church who will pay the most for his services.
Any wonder my country is so secular.…like a lot of others.
We don’t pretend to be religious, but it is clear that our politicians sometimes pretend to be, only to curry favor with everyone so as to garner votes.
This is why Jesus told us to be “no part of the world”….we are to support a heavenly kingdom, not an earthly one. (John 17:16; John 18:36) We will fight for that kingdom with spiritual weapons, but never for the governments of this world with carnal weapons. (Romans 12:17-21)
Who is running this show? (1 John 5:19)
