I want to revisit a idea that I posted some time ago. Since I have had more time to think about it in more detail I'll see if I can articulate this idea better:

When it comes down to how we treat each other monetarily, we've become accustomed to think in terms of give and take. But there is ultimately a drawback to thinking that way about each other.
If I was to ask you to buy me a pear then after you bought the pear and handed it to me, you have given me a pear, and I have to take the pear from you. See the problem with this way of thinking is that when you gave me that pear you can not see yourself as taking the pear, so you'll never think yourself as taking the pear at the time you give it to me, and I can't think myself as giving you the pear when you hand me the pear. Now if it wasn't a pear you gave to me but a candy bar you found on the street our thinking about it will be locked into the same pattern. Even if you picked up some dry dog poo and gave that to me, we'd still be seeing each other in this interaction.

He was freely offered the gospel, the gift of life in the coming age, and declined it.
