Getting personal with each other.

I believe we have all done it.

Out of curiosity , do you think it is a learnt behaviour from childhood?

IE....Parents getting personal with each other, wouldn’t that rub off on their children?

Just interested in other members feed back...I find it very childish....

Maybe we are ignorant to the fact that we get very personal with each other.

What’s it all about?

I’ve been asking the Lord this question for ages...maybe he will answer it, through speaking through some members...hopefully giving me an answer or at least some insight into it.

Accusations flying around about our character....I mean I’ve been accused of being a devil worshipper....I’m sure I’ve accused others also....why do we do it?

I honestly don’t understand the implication this is bad in any way. We are commanded to live each other. That’s about as personal as it gets.

In my study of male bonding, the foundation is common interest action. We have to earn getting personal over time. As we do the common interest action, men tend to share personal information.

Perhaps you are aware when people do this prematurely?

I’m not talking about that , whatever Jesus did it was the right thing to do.

What does Jesus teach about throwing insults at each other, accusing the brethren of all sorts of un- truths about another’s character?

I think that is very different than the OP question. When does one expressing the truth about you become insulting?

If what is said is false or malicious, it says more about the speaker than who they are insulting.

I can ignore the insults now, in the Name Of Jesus, even though they come out of their mouth, it’s understanding not to take what is said personally....

The Lord is helping me understand abusive insults trying to damage another’s character.

Humble ourselves...so what they abuse your character...are we to proud or is our ego so big ,that we can’t be verbally abused...without reacting to their verbal abuse.....does that make sense?

I don't see that everyone hurls insults, though.

It's just one more flavor of sin, a fleshy response because of fear, or pride. "You dare lecture me? You who have been steeped in sin from your birth?" There are ones here who certainly reflect that attitute. Or just that one cannot defend their views, and chooses to try to shut down others, bully them off the thread, to avoid having to deal with their replies. I see that too.

At the heart of the matter is, well, the heart.

It is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. So then, people say such things because that is what is in their heart, to do so. They genuinely perceive others as less than themselves, fair game for whatever they want to dish out.

Values, standards, if we have them, and uphold them, I don't think it matters what we learned from our parents, we can choose. If we are lazy we may just act like children all our lives.

The felt need for affirmation can drive much bad behavior. Worst case scenario, narcissist personality disorder, this person will be routinely abusive, manipulative, but inside is a frightened child.

If you love others, it will show in your words. Humility will show in your words. Fear, anger, contempt, all will show in your words.

As I think about this, I'm considering that the reason for evil speaking of others is either from fear of losing control, or from pride, that someone would dare dispute something.

Another thing I've heard said, I think this is often true, "hurt people hurt people." This can be a repetition compulsion, the need to take control of your own hurt by hurting others, thus proving to one's self that "I'm not just a victim, I can be the abuser!"

It's a great topic, and I know there is a lot more to it.

Hmmm. I believe the Lord is calling us to take what is personal as personal and this is extremely personal introspection. Either what is said is true or it is not.

If what is said is true, it means that I have areas in my life that could be improved. Humility is the proper response.

If what is said is false or malicious, it means that there is something in the other person that compels them to reveal the venom that is in their heart. Compassion and pity are the proper response.

Either way, the proper response is extremely personal - for us or the speaker.
